pens, pencils, slide rules, notebooks. I think it's a holdover from when we used to have analog math. You can store stuff in it and access it while you're sitting at a desk or whatever without standing up. This is all conjecture I don't actually know.
Yeah you’d have a pocket protector, a plastic or leather pouch holding your pen/s so they wouldn’t leak on your shirt or your compass would catch. Keeps them from falling out if you bend over. Usually have a compass, pen, pencil, ruler etc depending on your job.
My parents/older family members/friends and teachers had them before everything was computers and phones.
