Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

What can I post?

I apologize for a bit of a delay this time around. @[email protected] will be taking a hiatus from Hexbear to redirect focus to local organizing efforts. For the time being, I will be taking over the posting of EM POC weekly threads.

With that aside, how's everyone doing? Any exciting news, funny memes or stories, or interesting takes? We'd love to hear it all!

Remember, EM POC only!

How's everyone doing?

I'm doing well, been trying to just focus on my physical fitness and skill improvement. Trying to retrain myself for employment purposes.

Any exciting news

I getting back into fighting games and I found a really cool POC/Queer community for fighting community. Lots of these katz are really cool and great at teaching systems and mechanics.

interesting takes?

Because I'm having to retrain myself I find myself reading about corporate jobs. I am thoroughly convinced that private tyranny is something that has been thoroughly normalized in our society. I find it so strange that everyone must do exactly as their employer says or face starvation. This isn't a new insight, but I do believe it's worth talking about always. As a worker/proletariat/regular dude, I think it's always important to focus politics on the regular everyday stuff, and I think a lot of regular everyday stuff gets overlooked because of how normalized it is. It’s really fuckin’ wack that private tyrants have made the idea that democracy only happens in the “public” space, and the “public” space is getting privatized more and more every day.

I wish I could be good at fighting games but I don't have the technical skills/muscle memory for it. Lots of overlap with chess and go, but in real time. RTS games I have the same problem, despite playing them for most of my life.

As far as I'm concerned, these are the only two genres that come close to being sports. You legit have to do cardio exercises to play at the professional level. That's not the case with MOBAs where people are taking smoke breaks between matches at world championship events lmao

Confidently I got into Fighting games and RTS games from Chess in middle school. My parents didn't want me playing "violent" games that had contemporary violence (like a Call Of Duty) and let me buy/play games that had violence that was either 3rd person like an RTS or absurd like fighting game. I have always liked games that make think about how I'm playing them rather than just responding to whatever the "current" meta is. The moment to moment in an RTS or a Fighter is very much like Chess in that you're constantly examining yourself and yourself in respect to your opponent and vice versa.

I've heard lots of good things about street fighter 6 in terms of accessibility. They have a new input system that removes some of the muscle memory & combo execution requirements while keeping the tactical depth the genre is loved for. It also has a single player campaign mode with mini games that teach you combos. The most inaccessible part of the game is the £50 price, which has prevented me from giving it a go (as well as not knowing a good place to pirate games for linux). I'd be worried to spend so much on a game if I don't really get into it, but I did notice it had a free demo while I was looking up the price, so maybe I'll give that a go
