So I was reading up about it a little, and apparently the lady did get some kind of spoken agreement from the priest that she could restore it:

"(The) priest knew it! He did! How could you do something like that without permission? He knew it!"

and the priest then washed his hands of her once she botched it.

That being said, the piece is getting so much attention that the little church is raking in donations, and the woman is now sueing for a piece of the pie:

Exactly, for example, "ich bin laden" pretty transparently translates roughly to "I am loaded with accusations of lying underground with an air pipe and a fan"

My ex was like that; 3rd generation, no German pass.

Her grandad worked the factories, her mum was born and grew up in the workhouses next to the factories (apparently they'd hand him lunch through the wall), and her mum had no formal education other than sunday school.

Fiercely proud of their heritage and shunned/mocked by previous generations of Germans, they didn't see the need to get German citizenship. Even my Ex.

When I saw the way things were going in Germany, I begged her to get her German passport before it was too late. I hope she did.

I remember weighing up either getting the iPhone at the time, the Nexus One, and the Nokia N900. It was a close call between the Nexus and the Nokia, mostly because I wanted those sweet sweet Android apps that everyone had, but ultimately I went with the N900 and it changed my life.

I could write my own Python on the train, I learned C and C++ over the course of a long car trip, and even started writing my own Apps on the device itself. Can you imagine that? On-device app development? In any language you want? It was unheard of at the time, and is relatively unheard of even now.
