One answer: People love their defaults. Computers come pre installed with Windows, MacOS, (Bad) Android. Creative professionals are trained on Adobe Suite. Business professionals are trained and certified for MS Office and SaaS ERP Software. They don’t look beyond the defaults because their goal is not to determine which software/tool gives the most value or teaches them the most but which software/tool is the default that will give them a job and unfortunately FOSS is not the default for 90% of those people.

Why spend on alcohol when I can buy more books, games, travel the world or join a sports club instead of damaging my own body and end up paying more with hospital bills later in life?

It was on default (i.e 0.0.0.0). Switching to NXDOMAIN worked. Thanks.

Update: In Adguard turn the blocking method to NXDOMAIN so it won’t give this error. It still gives a warning that “you’re using a VPN”. Edit: I am on iOS 26.

Broader Context: All Indian Banking apps have been instructed to not allow the use of VPN slot while using a banking app. The Central Bank has also ordered to disallow usage if Developers Options are turned on. Apart from that globally all banking apps require Google Play Services and Boot-loader to be locked. I also found on some reddit post that they are not allowing the use of a 5 year old + phones for banking.

I am running Arch Linux with KDE Plasma (wayland).

Today I discovered Steam Link. I enabled it and worked flawlessly with Steam games. But it showed a black screen for non-steam games (lutris shortcuts specifically) although the input did work. I thought it was a wayland issue and I was right as I immediately installed & switched to X11 session and I was able to see the game. I don't know if it is an x11 issue but my Laptop's (host) fans were running pretty fast and sometimes games were just crashing or refused to launch (which rarely happens on wayland). I doubt that just the addional overhead of steamlink is causing these issues (although I won't reject that possibility) given I have pretty decent hardware — ryzen 9 8945h, rtx 4070 8gb laptop gpu, 32 gigs of ram.

Also on x11 a lot of display settings seem to be missing. I don't want to keep x11 just for playing non steam games via steam link. So is there a way to play non-steam games via steam link on wayland session?

Wait DLSS is about upscaling right? The “features” mentioned in OP’s post are about motion interpolation that makes the video seem to be playing at higher fps than the standard 24fps used in movies and shows.

Wtf is going on in this world? Why does every fucking fascist government wants to control all the computers and the internet?

The Department of Telecommunications has told these apps that within the next 90 days, they must make sure their services work only when the correct SIM card is in the phone. If you remove that SIM, the app should stop working. This is known as SIM binding.

  • Continuous SIM presence: Apps must check regularly whether the original SIM card is still inserted in your phone. If not, the app must automatically stop working until you insert the correct SIM again.
  • Web access restrictions: If you use WhatsApp Web or similar web versions, the government wants you to get logged out automatically every six hours. To log in again, you will have to scan a QR code with the app. This is to ensure the device and user are genuine.

People who use these apps on secondary devices without a SIM, or those who keep their SIM in one phone but use the app on another, may face interruptions

I don't even see the point of this:

  • Surveillance?
  • Some Incoming telecom plan change which will require you to have a special plan for using Messengers because no one uses SMS and don't bother to have an SMS plan? so telecom networks can make some more money?

… continues to make Play Integrity an integral part of Android and making all the stupid banking and govt apps requiring having it on your phone thus making it harder to de-google.

still no… fuck you.

I’ve got a small backlog of games on my laptop (running Arch Linux with KDE) through Lutris. I usually play with a keyboard and a mouse, but since I sit pretty close to my screen (ik bad habit), it starts getting uncomfortable after a while. So I’ve been thinking about picking up a gamepad for some more relaxed, couch style gaming.

I’ve never actually owned a gamepad or a console before, so this would be my first time. From what I’ve seen on Reddit, a lot of people seem to have good experiences using Xbox controllers on Linux. I just wanted to get some more insight before buying one to make sure I’m making the right choice.

I’m also planning to grab a second controller so my girlfriend and I can play some local multiplayer games together.

Update: I went with 8BitDo Ultimate C wired as it was cheaper and a lot of folks below suggested it over the original Xbox Controller. It worked out of the box. I have only tested it with Marvel’s Spiderman 2 from Fitgirl repacks installed and running via Lutris. Worked w/o any issues.

Immich: Image Backup* solution — like Google Photos or Ente Photos but self-hosted.

*Backup in the sense of uploading your photos to a server you own. You should backup the database as well as your library with 3-2-1 method.

One of the best pieces of self-hosted software ever to exist.

Edit: This is Immich! for the folks who don't know.

Agreed, but is a chicken and egg problem. People won't use Linux because the apps they want don't support it and apps won't support it because most people don't use Linux. Someone will have to cave in if we want to break this stupid proprietary duopoly.

[-] sonofearth@lemmy.world 23 points 4 months ago

Even I want to believe that but I am an Indian and know how people think here. Families here think if their daughter/wife/mother/sister have been raped, it would bring disgrace to them if the news spread in the public so they stay silent and hope it would pass. This is especially true for low income families.

According to the girl’s family, Rashid first lured her to his home by offering fruit. He allegedly filmed the assault and threatened to harm her relatives if she told anyone.

The family knew and decided to do nothing about it?
