Historically, as I understand it, what they would drink would be pretty weak ABV. 2-3%. Barely beer at all. It'd be plenty hydrating.
It's pretty heartwarming seeing all his friends come together to help him get his shot. Dude is obviously terrified and struggling. Bravery is more about facing your fear than it is about objective danger.

Among the other suggestions people have made in this thread, I'd like to add that just covering something and allowing the food to steam-heat makes a big difference. For instance I will usually poke a well in the middle of leftovers, put a tiny bit of water in (especially with rice, which dries out) and cover it with a plate. The water boils and heats it much better.
In a few years maybe we'll be back to visiting in person and handing out paper resumes. Look the boss firmly in the eye and give them a strong handshake.
