Olan Rogers made Final Space and he's working on Lightspeed right now. It had a pretty successful run and has a loyal fanbase, despite it being cancelled.

But yeah, stories like these are very rare.

It redirects to "Rectal administration" on Wikipedia, so yeah...I'm also not clicking on that one for "further" research. :D

Disney's "The Black Hole". It came from a time just after Walt Disney had died and they were still figuring out their shit.

So they made an extremely dark SciFi flick with a cute robot that appeals to children which is such a weird combination, but I liked it a lot. I can't even say why.

The U.S.S. Cygnus looks fucking badass, too. One of the best ship designs in a SciFi movie, change my mind.

Was tun gegen die Gewalt?

Apple TV+ is painful as fuck (discuss.tchncs.de)
submitted 3 weeks ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I watched some of Apple's recent shows using...different methods than the official app and I believe they're making some of the best content out there, currently. Shows like Severance and For All Mankind are masterpieces and they give me the SciFi fix I desperately needed.

So I've decided to bite the bullet and get a subscription - after all, you should support the creators you're really invested in, right?

Watching content on their platform is so painful - it's one of the worst experiences I ever had. If you want to watch the shows in a browser, you need to use Microsoft Edge on Windows because that's the only browser which comes with Playwright DRM - and it only works if you have a HDCP 2.2-capable screen. If you don't have that, the content gets served in 480p with a low bitrate. Might as well just put in a VHS at this point.

There's another alternative: The official Windows 11 app you can get from the store. It is indeed capable of serving you UHD streams...if it wants to. All episodes that are age-rated to 16+ currently don't work, because they forgot to implement an age verification mechanism and pressing play doesn't do anything at all. According to their forums, that even seems to happen on MacOS in some cases, so they really messed up the most important thing of their own streaming platform: Pressing Play to watch an episode.

Even if you're lucky and you're watching a show that isn't age-restricted, they serve the content in the language your Apple account has been set to when you've created it by default. So every time you open an episode, you have to start it and switch the audio to English. If you go to your account settings to change the language it tells you that your subscription needs to end before you can do that. So you have to wait four weeks or a whole year to change the default language, depending on the subscription model.

Adding to that, sometimes the video streams just freeze, the audio doesn't play at all or the app straightup crashes in the middle of a stream.

I have rarely seen a platform messing up the user experience this badly. It's as if Apple doesn't even want you to watch their own content. I've decided to not renew my subscription and procure the episodes from other sources. I wanted to give you money, Apple. But you fucked up.

I run a forum where the first post was started 23 years ago. Although the activity has drastically gone down during recent years, people still occasionally come by. I'm very happy I kept it up, even though a lot of people switched over to a Discord server.

Recently we had an incident where the sole admin of the Discord server was banned and the whole Discord had to be abandoned and created from scratch. People still keep using this trash! I'm not arguing with them, I'll just keep an alternative up. One day, when Discord really enshittifies itself to a point where it becomes unuseable, people will be happy for my stubborness. I hope.

(It's a forum for an obscure space pirate game for the PC - I-War 2. Its first post is here.)

TV: Do you ever feel scared? He's the richest man in the world.

VW: He's a pathetic man-child. Why would I feel scared of him? Ohhh, he has so much power. Nah, nah, nah. I don't give a fk. Why should I be scared of this man? Because he's rich? Oh, no, I'm trembling. Ooh, shivering in my boots here. I don't give a fk how much money anyone has. I don't. I really don't. He owns Twitter. Okay. Congratulations.

Absolutely based. The pathetic man-child was probably fuming when reading those lines. :)

My sister gifted me the third book of a fantasy trilogy series once.
I never read or got the first two books.

Also, when I was little, my grandma (who hated me with passion) bought me a pink bike just to piss me off, because she thought a boy wouldn't ever like that color. I rode that bike until I was too tall to use it and every time she saw me enjoying that thing she was furious. :)

When I was in my 20's, I always gave 200% at the jobs I worked at. I was young and naive and believed I would eventually be rewarded for all the hard work I put in, even on weekends and night shifts.

Then I got burnout, because I was working at a pace my body just couldn't sustain anymore.

It changed my life drastically. I learned to value my health and free time and to prioritize that over the needs of my employer. I learned that hard work doesn't neccessarily bring you any benefits, it mostly benefits your employer. I also learned that nobody cares when your health is fucked up - for your employer, you're just a cog in the machine that can be replaced.

Nowadays I only work four days a week and I don't give a shit about what happens on Fridays anymore. Server is down? Not my problem, get someone else to fix it.

I also learned to stand up for myself. I'm not getting paid like a monkey anymore and if you promise me a raise and then pretend like that never happened afterwards, you'll have my resignation on your desk, printed out by the company printer right in front of you.

There is a curated list of "no-bullshit" mobile games, without microtransactions and all of that horrible stuff: https://nobsgames.stavros.io/

My favorites so far:

  • Monument Valley 1+2
  • Riptide GP: Renegade
  • Badland
  • Galaxy on Fire 2 HD

  • proper adblocking with AdAway
  • ability to patch official apps to remove ads and improve the usability with ReVanced
  • being able to root the device and use HttpToolkit to analyze the data that flows from apps to the web
  • extensive customization (I can choose my own launcher and keyboard application)
  • proper file management, especially with Total Commander
  • watching Dolby Vision .mkv files with mpv
  • price (iPhones are all way too expensive)
  • Apple's stance against repairability

And this point is more hardware-related, but I've started to really love my Nothing Phone and its LED lights on the back, which produces amazing photos because the light is much softer than the small flash used by other phones. There isn't a single Apple device with a feature like this. You could probably get a case, but it's nice to have this integrated into the phone.
