I'm not sure I follow. You can terminate your cables into wall mounted sockets just like your electrics. What's the issue with this?

No, because a switch can't route traffic from one point to another. Specifically, it can't do NAT. Without NAT you can only have 1 device connected to the internet.

If you move it and it changes behaviour, that's some sort of bad mechanical contact. Cabling, socket.

Can you post a screenshot of everything? Can't tell what the link is. Your PC to the router? Your router to the WAN?

Use vlans to create a dmz you can place a server only for public Internet facing stuff.

Wifi 6e access point recommendations (alien.top)
 

Now that black friday is pretty much here I've decided to do away with the ISP provided wifi router and I'm in the market for a wifi 6e access point. I already have an opnsense box at the ready to do the router part, the ISP's wifi router is in AP mode.

For reasons I can't change I can't wire the house for ethernet, I have no coax and I already have powerline which works alright but far from great and doesn't hit the spot. The AP has to be inside of a cupboard with 3 solid walls around it plus a wooden door that signals have to punch through.

I have never bought any wifi hardware so I'm a little lost on brands and whatnot. What I'm after:

  • Wifi 6e
  • Longish range
  • Sub-200

I realise it's probably a "pick 2" situation since 6e is relatively new and uncommon. I'm not after mesh systems, they'd be useless given the problem I'm trying to solve

If you're worried about privacy and security you can always DIY. If you are able, it's always the best option for a NAS.

I'm currently experiencing high latency and inconsistent speeds between devices on my LAN, which affects a couple of things including PS5 remote play.

My current set up is less than ideal due to the fact I can't wire up the house with ethernet.

I get nearly 100mbps with powerline at my office and around 70mbps at the entertainment centre. All other devices connect via wifi.

Even though this set up is less than ideal it's the best I've been able to get without spending a ton of money wiring my home properly. To add insult to injury, the ethernet socket from the ISP sits inside of a cupboard with solid walls around it. This predates me living here, I don't know what they were thinking.

Two issues I'm trying to determine, which are possibly related. First, I have very high latency between wifi and wired (anywhere from 8 to 20ms). Second, PS remote play works like arse (ps5 connected to powerline and reporting 90mbps both ways and remote player on wifi). Speeds between devices that aren't on the same switch are all over the place - I expect this from powerline, but not so much from wifi.

Things I can't change: the router location and the wiring. Things I can change: everything else.

Any ideas?

Try connecting your computer directly with a cable 9t at least test your Internet speed right next to the router. Whatever the result is the best you're going to get from your ISP.

Yes, that's very true. But worth remembering that while you can usually get away with cat 5 for 1gbps, that's only up to a certain length, depending on the quality of the cable. If your cable is in or around the threshold for that particular cable where noise picks up, you could get inconsistent speeds like OP is.
