Gabbard faced concerns from several Republican senators over her lack of support for Ukraine; her shifting position on the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act’s Section 702, a key surveillance and security tool; her 2017 meeting with former Syrian President Bashar al-Assad; and her past support for Edward Snowden.

In December 2020, shortly before she left Congress, Gabbard introduced legislation that would repeal the Patriot Act and Section 702.

In a contentious hearing, she refused under persistent questioning by Republican and Democratic lawmakers on the Senate Intelligence Committee to say whether she now believed Snowden’s actions were traitorous.

“I am glad that Ms. Gabbard plans to focus on identifying and eliminating redundancies and inefficiencies to restore the office to what it was originally designed to be,” he said.

Feds gonna get fired, better get used to that austerity. You reap what you sow, in this case "small government" propaganda.

Other than that she's a very weird pick and I have no idea how Republicans even embraced her given her political record is centered almost solely on opposing direct US involvement in wars (from a liberal perspective).

The best thing the Financial Times ever did for capitalism and liberals in general was to put an expensive paywall on their website. Imagine if regular people had quick and easy access to one of the most renowned economics newspapers in their regime complaining about housing prices going down.

A sad development, I'll now become an ultra-left reactionary maoist and hate on Xi specifically for hating autistic people.

Cross-posting on hexbear because I'm pretty sure y'all have more experience dealing with gamers.

I'm writing some critical notes on a socdem book (Taplin's MFBT), and at one point it mentions GamerGate while exploring the rise of the internet fascists.

Now, I know what GamerGate was, I even watched a lot of it as it unfolded, but I can't find a way to properly characterise it. It doesn't help that, with some hindsight I can see both how a lot of the "leaders" of the movement became barely relevant but a lot of their tactics were adopted or further developed by the more mainstream fascists. Besides that the whole structure of it looks very fishy considering all the known astroturfing strategies used nowadays.

A lot of the resources I've read on it is the typical lib idealist mass psychoanalysis (Innuendo Studios comes to mind), so I was wondering if y'all had some more critical resources about that.

Specially the bit at the end ("the point") where she describes how a lot of disabled people could actually even be productive at their own paces, but because it'd be inefficient to capital to accommodate them they are either coerced into unhealthy work lives or tossed aside completely.

What do y'all think?

Other countries which have agreed to contribute troops to the proposed Haiti intervention are Jamaica, Bahamas, Mongolia, Senegal, Belize, Guatemala, Peru, Italy, Antigua and Barbuda, Suriname, and Spain.

Canada, South Canada and European Canada didn't want to get directly involved in their own war, as is tradition.

Full text from condemnation:

The Communist Party of Kenya strongly condemns their nation’s involvement in the impending occupation of Haiti.

The Communist Party of Kenya demands that the Kenya Kwanza government rescind their proposal to send 1,000 police to Haiti, while calling on the Kenyan people to join the Haitian masses and popular progressive forces worldwide in opposing the intervention, continued occupation and neo-colonial governance of Haiti by the Core Group and the UN.

The Central Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of Kenya, expresses deep concern regarding the proposed deal between the USA and the Kenyan Government. It is with great displeasure and utmost frustration that we are forced to witness Kenya allowing itself to be recruited into the imperialist activities of the United States, the Core Group and United Nations. The reported plan of involving Kenyan police to carry out actions on behalf of the USA government in Haiti raises serious ethical and moral questions. In its efforts to endear itself to the systems of power that underpin Western hegemony, Kenya is providing legitimacy for a long-standing series of interventions into Haiti that seek to undermine the aspirations of the Haitian people.

Kenya’s motive to send a small contingent of police officers to Haiti is not to solve the so-called problems of insecurity that beset Haiti. Just as it has been done in the past through recruitment of Caribbean and African countries, it is to prevent accusations of racism and oppressive grip of Western foreign powers by having third world nations give their support for the exploitation of Haiti. “If there is a humanitarian crisis, the response cannot be to send in foreign troops. The countries that today are the first to bemoan the control of Haiti by the various gangs are the first to have sponsored these same kingpins in other times, such as in Afghanistan during the time of the Mujahedin or in Saddam Hussein’s Iraq against Iran.”

The Communist Party of Kenya firmly rejects any form of neocolonialism and condemns attempts to use a Black face to brutalize Haiti or any other nation by the members of the Core Group, including representatives of the United Nations, Canada, France, Germany, Spain, the European Union, the United States, and the Organization of American States. The party recognizes the systems of maintaining a neo-colonial agenda in Haiti, or as dubbed in popular Haitian lingua, “Sistèm nan” (The System).

We vehemently stand with the exploited Haitian population and oppose any western led interventions or involvement whatsoever in Haiti. By agreeing to send troops into Haiti, the Kenyan government is diminishing the sovereignty and self-determination of Haitian people, while preserving the neo-colonial interests of the United States, the Core Group and the United Nations. Imperialism, historically rooted in exploitation and subjugation, has caused immense suffering across continents. Similarly, the USA’s rise to power was significantly fueled by the enslavement of millions of African people, whose labor laid the foundation for its economic prosperity. The echoes of this dark past continue to resonate in various forms of systemic racial and social inequalities that persist in the USA today.

As the Central Organizing Committee of the Communist Party of Kenya, we address the historical injustices perpetrated by both Europe and the USA. Europe’s wealth and development have, in large part, been built on the stolen resources and exploitation of the global South during colonial times. As advocates of anti-imperialism, we must acknowledge and condemn the historical actions of both Europe and the USA that have contributed to the global inequities we face. Our commitment to a just and equitable world demands that we confront and challenge the oppressive legacies of these colonial and enslavement practices.

The party denounces and urges parliament to intervene in the actions being undertaken by the current administration. Exploiting vulnerable Kenyans for any purpose is unacceptable. President Ruto’s actions in this regard must be rejected, and the government’s focus should be on empowering its citizens, not auctioning them to willing buyers. Our commitment lies in advocating for policies that uplift the marginalized and create a fair and just society, addressing root causes of societal issues, including land problems and the need for investment in industries to create jobs and improve lives. Furthermore, there must be rigorous discourse in the public sphere with parliament engaging with the masses before such unilateral actions are undertaken. Of course, we recognize that this was done specifically without public involvement as the masses would readily recognize the actions for what they are, efforts to sabotage Haiti’s sovereignty, utilization of state instruments in the continual subjugation of the oppressed Haitian people and disruption of Pan-Africanism solidarity. We must therefore, intensify the struggle from below, emphasizing grassroots movements and collective action to bring about transformative change.

Moving forward, we stand resolute in our pursuit of justice and the dismantling of imperialist structures that perpetuate global exploitation and subjugation. We call on all revolutionary forces, people’s movements and organizations across the globe to unite in the struggle for a future that respects the sovereignty of nations, upholds human rights, and ensures the welfare of all people, regardless of their geographic location. The Communist Party of Kenya reaffirms our unwavering commitment to the principles of peace, justice, and sovereignty in Haiti.

Long live the struggles of Haitian People!
       Long Live free, liberated Haiti!
Long live the struggle for justice and liberation!
In solidarity with the oppressed peoples of the world

Summary of the 2023 WGA MBA (www.wgacontract2023.org)
submitted 2 years ago by [email protected] to c/[email protected]

I don't remember the old numbers or their proposed deal from earlier off the top of my head, but the changes here look huge!

Some highlights:

The WGA reserves the right to assert that exploitation of writers’ material to train AI is prohibited by MBA or other law.

Each writer on a writing team employed for a script will receive pension and health contributions up to the relevant cap as though they were a single writer, rather than splitting the applicable cap. In addition, when a writing team is employed on a series, the contribution for each writer on the team will be made on the full weekly minimum instead of one-half of the weekly minimum.

Guaranteed 2nd step: A second step is required whenever a writer is hired for a first draft screenplay for 200% of minimum or less, including original and non-original screenplays. The requirement also applies to spec purchases.

Streaming features: When a feature-length project is made for streaming with a budget of $30 million or more, the minimum initial compensation for a story & teleplay is $100,000 (an 18% increase from the current rate) and a 26% increase in the residual base. Combined with the foreign residual improvements described below, this results in a 3-year residual of $216,000 for projects on the largest services, a 49% increase from $144,993 under the 2020 MBA.

The entirety of section 7 is just fantasstic:

7. Improved Terms in High Budget Subscription Video on Demand (HBSVOD)

Increased foreign streaming residuals: Foreign streaming residuals will now be based on the streaming service’s number of foreign subscribers for services available globally, amounting to a 76% increase (including a 2.5% base increase) to the foreign residual for the services with the largest global subscriber bases over 3 years. For instance, Netflix’s 3-year foreign residual will increase from the current $18,684 for a one-hour episode to $32,830.

Viewership-based streaming bonus: The Guild negotiated a new residual based on viewership. Made-for HBSVOD series and films that are viewed by 20% or more of the service’s domestic subscribers in the first 90 days of release, or in the first 90 days in any subsequent exhibition year, get a bonus equal to 50% of the fixed domestic and foreign residual, with views calculated as hours streamed domestically of the season or film divided by runtime. For instance, projects written under the new MBA on the largest streaming services would receive a bonus of $9,031 for a half-hour episode, $16,415 for a one-hour episode, or $40,500 for a streaming feature over $30 million in budget. This bonus structure will take effect for projects released on or after January 1, 2024.

Streaming Data Transparency: The Companies agree to provide the Guild, subject to a confidentiality agreement, the total number of hours streamed, both domestically and internationally, of self-produced high budget streaming programs (e.g., a Netflix original series). The Guild may share information with the membership in aggregated form.

Premium for Pilot & Backup Scripts: 150% pilot premium and 115% backup script premiums will now apply to programs made for HBSVOD.

This has been the best deal in the history of labour deals, maybe ever.

Striking is great, y'all!

He has been jailed for 48 years on bullshit charges. I didn't see much commentary here about that, so I thought I should share.

Even if that wasn't the case, the main advertised methods for helping are medication, therapy, lifestyle changes, better diets and exercise, all of which are heavily bounded by one's financial condition.

People do as they will, but they do so while bound by their social conditions, or something of the sort.

It would be cool if French Guyana got in, I guess. The rest of France can stay neatly in Europe with their soaring energy prices.

Honestly it's about time for this one, and this might even be a change for good. From what I've heard and read, the issues right now are so systemic and entrenched that there could be no solution from within the party. But from what I understand (and I might be wrong), the current split doesn't intend to create a different party, only to deal with the current leadership and make the party apparatus be actually effective for once.

To me this inspires some hope, as my biggest complaint in our politics was the lack of a truly committed and effective revolutionary party. Can't wait for the dust to settle.

Yeah, those track. I'll watch the lecture but I was wondering if, for instance, there are many volunteers eastern regions in the Russian military. I already assume that very few would be in the Ukrainian one since they've been at literal war, but I hardly hear much about soldiers coming from the LPR and DPR militias in the Russian military or support among new soldiers from there. Those seem like interesting questions, and with the simple fact that the usual outlets aren't screaming at the top of their lungs that "separatists actually hate Russia," I guess I already know the answer.

The Nationality people on both sides of the peninsula are more than capable of figuring out what reunification looks like without further Yankee meddling or Western concern trolling.

This should be a copypasta for every civil war/internal conflict the USA shoved itself into.
