Official Title of this Community: Ethnic Minorities and People of Color

Why is the title different?

We like to have fun here.

What is this place? A safe space for underrepresented peoples and peoples of color to talk, chill, and vibe.

What are the basic rules of the community?

  1. Follow Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines. Non negotiable. This is the bedrock and mods will make decisions with this always in mind.

  2. This community is for ethnic minorities and people of color. This is a safe space where such people can freely discuss their struggles, insight, and thoughts without fear. If you are not, we respectfully ask you do not post or comment here. A future community will be established to allow for racial discussions with a mixed userbase. However, remember, comments here must still respect Lemmy TOS and Community Guidelines.

  3. Irony Racism is still racism. Racism is bad m'kay? We will treat irony racism and bad faith racist satire as racism. Will wield the ban hammer accordingly.

  4. No sectarianism: This is an identity channel not a channel for you all to complain about why XYZ isn't the "one true leftism". Take that to another place.

  5. Stupidpol is not allowed. Stupidpol is class reductionist. We are an identity community. Thinking like stupidpol ignores the struggles of the oppressed, their voices, and their need for unique support. Nothing says oppression more than someone saying that the identity you have is "not real" and that if you only thought like them you'd see what your "real" identity is. Mods reserve the right to ban users and content who promote stupidpol, stupidpol memes, and other class reductionist thinking.

FAQ

I don't look XYZ and/or sometimes I can pass as white so I don't know if I can post here. Can I?

What can I post?

“I dissuade Party members from putting down people who do not understand. Even people who are unenlightened and seemingly bourgeois should be answered in a polite way. Things should be explained to them as fully as possible. I was turned off by a person who did not want to talk to me because I was not important enough. Maurice just wanted to preach to the converted, who already agreed with him. I try to be cordial, because that way you win people over. You cannot win them over by drawing the line of demarcation, saying you are on this side and I am on the other; that shows a lack of consciousness. After the Black Panther Party was formed, I nearly fell into this error. I could not understand why people were blind to what I saw so clearly. Then I realized that their understanding had to be developed.”

― Huey P. Newton :huey-wut:

Huey Newton, born on the 17th of february in 1942, was a Marxist-Leninist revolutionary who, along with fellow Merritt College student Bobby Seale, co-founded the Black Panther Party (‪1966 - 1982‬). Together with Seale, Newton created a ten-point program which laid out guidelines for how the African-American community could achieve liberation. In the 1960s, under Newton's leadership, the Black Panther Party founded over 60 community support programs (renamed survival programs in 1971) including food banks, medical clinics, HIV support groups, sickle cell anemia tests, prison busing for families of inmates, legal advice seminars, clothing banks, housing co-ops, and their own ambulance service.

The most famous of these programs was the Free Breakfast for Children program which fed thousands of impoverished children daily during the early 1970s. Newton also co-founded the Black Panther newspaper service which became one of America's most widely distributed African-American newspapers. In 1967, he was involved in a shootout which led to the death of the police officer John Frey. Although arrested for the murder of Frey, the charges were eventually dismissed.

In 1970, after his release from prison, Newton received an invitation to visit the People's Republic of China. Newton made the trip in late September 1971 with fellow Panthers, Elaine Brown and Robert Bay, and stayed for 10 days. At every Chinese airport he landed in, Newton was greeted by thousands of people waving copies of the "Little Red Book" and displaying signs that said "we support the Black Panther Party, down with US imperialism" or "we support the American people but the Nixon imperialist regime must be overthrown."

By mid-decade, Newton faced more criminal charges when he was accused of murdering a 17-year-old sex worker and assaulting a tailor. To avoid prosecution, he fled to Cuba in 1974, but returned to the U.S. three years later. The murder case was eventually dismissed after two trials ended with deadlocked juries, while the tailor refused to testify in court in relation to assault charges.

Despite graduating from high school not knowing how to read, he taught himself literacy by reading Plato's Republic and earned a Ph.D. in social philosophy from the University of California at Santa Cruz's History of Consciousness program in 1980. In 1989, he was murdered in Oakland, California by Tyrone Robinson, a member of the Black Guerrilla Family.

Revolutionary suicide does not mean that I and my comrades have a death wish; it means just the opposite. We have such a strong desire to live with hope and human dignity that existence without them is impossible. When reactionary forces crush us, we must move against these forces, even at the risk of death. We will have to be driven out with a stick.”

― Huey P. Newton, Revolutionary Suicide :huey-wut:

god i love becoming Actual Friends with my colleagues. management and capital so clearly don't want us to connect on that level and breaking through the veil of atomization can be so goddam rewarding. i love having a community. ive had workplaces where pretty much everyone and the whole culture sucked and this just wasn't possible but it really does feel good when you find a place where those connections are possible and you actually explore them.

Made a sauce for meatloaf on Monday. I threw away the leftover sauce because coworkers were arguing with me about it and I was like "fuck it they can just make more fucking sauce when they put it out"

Nobody ever used the meatloaf, so i'm going to put it out tonight. Need to make more fucking sauce ughhh

If you're asking how many roads must a man walk down before you can call him a man, does that question not presuppose that they are a man before he began walking roads? Therefore the answer (blowing out my arse) is zero roads. A man is what they make of themself.

So I've been home sick all week and just now have recovered enough to have the energy to use a gamepad. Currently playing a whole lot of NES games on the switch that I've never played before. Some quick reviews:

Star Soldier: This is one of the hardest games I've ever played. Even with flagrant abuse of save states I just cannot beat the final boss.

SCAT: Despite the giggle-inducing name, this is actually a lot of fun. Recommended.

City Connection: Interesting concept but the controls are total ass. This is the kind of game that deserves a remake.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

I miss when they're regularly call for an armed revolution lol. But also, I've no idea how they used to do that a lot and somehow cultivate an audience that would scold them for not being positive enough about biden? Like ??

will I regret spending 130 dollars on non-slip Brooks shoes to wear to work? I could afford it but it's hard not to be like "i'll just spend $40 on another pair of skechers that lasted 1.2 years and hurt my feet"

anybody know how to completely nuke a file type on Windows?

it associates this extension (.erf) with raw images by default and nothing I do seems to be able to change it
I just want it to consider it as any other arbitrary extension i.e. just binary data with no default app

it's like pulling teeth with this fucking OS

[–] [email protected] 7 points 9 months ago (1 children)

try editing the registry:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\FileExts - file associations you chose
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Classes - default file associations for current user
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Classes - default file associations system-wide

Wild that if you get a BA at Oxford or Cambridge (possibly Edinburgh?), you just pay £10 to change it to an MA like 5 years after graduation
