Welcome to the Unpopular Opinion community!

How voting works:

Vote the opposite of the norm.

If you agree that the opinion is unpopular give it an arrow up. If it's something that's widely accepted, give it an arrow down.

Guidelines:

Tag your post, if possible (not required)

  • If your post is a "General" unpopular opinion, start the subject with [GENERAL].
  • If it is a Lemmy-specific unpopular opinion, start it with [LEMMY].

Rules:

1. NO POLITICS

Politics is everywhere. Let's make this about [general] and [lemmy] - specific topics, and keep politics out of it.

2. Be civil.

Disagreements happen, but that doesn’t provide the right to personally attack others. No racism/sexism/bigotry. Please also refrain from gatekeeping others' opinions.

3. No bots, spam or self-promotion.

Only approved bots, which follow the guidelines for bots set by the instance, are allowed.

4. Shitposts and memes are allowed but...

Only until they prove to be a problem. They can and will be removed at moderator discretion.

5. No trolling.

This shouldn't need an explanation. If your post or comment is made just to get a rise with no real value, it will be removed. You do this too often, you will get a vacation to touch grass, away from this community for 1 or more days. Repeat offenses will result in a perma-ban.

Instance-wide rules always apply. https://legal.lemmy.world/tos/

Note that I'm not just talking about the shitheads who cause forest fires or water contamination, with their bullshit. I'm talking about ANY of this dumb shit.

People used to have some goddamn dignity. If you wanted to keep the sex of the baby a secret, then you'd have both pink and blue cigars ready to hand out, after the birth. If you wanted the doctor to tell you, then that's fine. You'd be talking to your friends and you'd go "yeah, the new kid's gonna be a girl."

The whole concept of an extra baby shower, just to hoot and holler about that shit is FUCKING INTOLERABLE.

As far as I'm concerned, it shows that these dipshits are only interested in their offspring as accessories to their own lives. They're after the attention they can get, off the back of their children. They're after the lifestyle of being a parent, so they can associate with other people who define themselves based on the social and material trappings of parenting. And they're drooling after social media likes and views.

Anyone who participates in that shit is proving that they're not interested in being the parent of a human being. They're just making a doll to dress up and pose for pictures, starting before the child is even out of the womb.

To reiterate the title: if it was up to me, everyone who has ever had any kind of gender-reveal nonsense for their upcoming kid should have that child seized by the state, hopefully to be raised by real people, rather than soulless degenerates.

Not just unpopular, but also extremist. πŸ‘ Congrats.

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago

I was legitimately expecting the word "breeders" to come up with how much OP seems to hate anything to do with new parents celebrating their new parenthood.

It's sort of aspirational, ya know what I mean?

If being a chill dude is your aspiration, getting this mad about something that has zero impact on your life is not the most effective way to achieve it.

Brah you need to smoke like ...way more weed than you're smoking. Really just go hard into edibles.

This is a generalization on the same level as "all black people are..." and makes just as much sense. I think they're stupid too, but did it because it's what everyone but the parents wanted. I didn't think the day was about me, but my parents and in-laws were excited about the whole thing, and it made them happy. But apparently that level of self absorption means my two children should be taken from me...

You need to re-examine your life.

It is annoying, but you're way too extreme. Take their kids from them!? You are an actual crazy person. You should not be allowed near schools.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago

Agreed. It's annoying for sure, but OP is insane. Even if it's stupid, there's absolutely nothing about it that indicates negligence of anywhere near the degree needed to justify forcibly removing a child from their parents.

When you get older, it gets harder and harder to find an excuse to get all your friends together, so you start making up BS reasons to do so. I don't see any harm in it tbh and I seriously doubt that you actually believe those people are "already an unfit parent, and [their] kid should be taken from [them], at birth," and if so, please go outside more and look at what life is like for children who are taken from their parents (parents who are presumably loving and financially sound enough to throw a party for them).

Yes most are insufferable. That being said... who gives a shit if Debra invites some family over to pop a balloon and celebrate the growing of a family?

Seems kinda harsh that people wanting to celebrate life with their loved ones should have their child "seized by the state"

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago

I think gender reveals are fucking stupid....but I don't know I subscribe to the idea that if you do one it makes you an unfit parent.

I also can't fathom why anyone would envy the lifestyle of a parent. I've not slept properly in 6 years and I never get a moments peace 😭

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago

Excellent post, very unpopular opinion, very fitting. Also f**k you.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago

This opinion is, indeed, quite unpopular, but I don't want to up vote and encourage people to harbor untreated mental illness like this.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago

Someone got forced to go to a gender reveal party

[–] [email protected] 9 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Hmmmm yes I'm sure the government will raise those kids better πŸ˜… Fr though besides this being a massive over-reaction, you're having your own "throw the baby out with the bathwater" moment.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 9 months ago

Well that actually seems like an unpopular opinion

[–] [email protected] 6 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

OK that's fucking stupid. I don't like gender reveal parties either, but that's a HUGE overreaction. People having different opinions about trivial things is not a reason to take their kids. WTF is wrong with you?

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

Upvote. Despite being in agreement. It's obnoxiously stupid.

[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Lol, spoken like someone that specifically hates a certain couple. You compared it to a baby shower, but it's a distinctly separate deal. Where a shower is for the parents, they get gifts and such to prepare them for a new child. A gender reveal party is more like a wedding, it's a party for your friends and loved ones, more the soon-to-be grandparents. In the past where medical tech couldn't accurately guess the sex of an unborn child, sure, people would get pink and blue stuff, but when that changed, finding out became a bit of a milestone in the process. Some people keep it low-key and just tell people who ask, others want to make a cute event of it. Your post says far more about you than the people you call "soulless degenerates".

[–] [email protected] 5 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Its not my thing but I can understand why people do it. I had friends who had a ton of fertility issues and several miscarriages. Finding out the gender on ultrasound is a milestone. They had never had a pregnancy last that long. It means they made it that far and all looked well. They wanted to celebrate as much as possible. They didn't care what the gender was and that pregnancy meant the world to them. I don't think she saw her son as an accessory at all. Who am I to get upset when people find an excuse to throw a party? There are some people who see their children as accessories but throwing an extra party isn't the measure of that.

Get a hobby

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Ours was an awesome party. Nice for dad to have a baby event to participate in. Everyone is excited that you’re far enough along to determine sex - we know lots of people who lost pregnancies early.

Due to other senses noun β€œsex”, calling it a sex reveal party isn’t super accepted.

Listen very closely, Karen: nooooobody was excited to participate in your asinine ritual. You just think they were, because you're one of the narcissists that I'm talking about. Everyone there (except for you) was bored and annoyed, the whole time. I guarantee it.

They're just not narcissists, so they obey the social contract. They nodded and smiled, to be polite. Don't misconstrue that as actual excitement.

[–] [email protected] 3 points 9 months ago* (last edited 9 months ago)

Wow. How narcissistic is it to assume everyone thinks like you? You don't speak for me. Maybe you got issues with your narcissistic parents but sadly they've rubbed off on you. You might want to look in the mirror before you continue being the very thing you claim to despise.

[–] [email protected] 1 points 9 months ago

Christ on a bike. You're allowed to not like something, that's fine. But your opinion isn't law.

Removing children from parents for a party, and saying they're better off being abused in a system rather than with their family because they... Threw a party. That's unhinged. You have serious unchecked mental health issues.

Maybe I should lose my kid then. Because I bought food and one confetti filled balloon to do a tiny reveal for my 6 year old sister because she was insanely excited to know if she'd have a niece or a nephew. God forbid I wanted to do something cute for my sister. I hate parties, I hate big celebrations and small ones. But seeing her smile and basically vibrate because pink confetti fell out of a balloon was such a cute moment. There was 4 of us there in total, me, her, my mum and my stepdad. We already knew. But wanted to make it a little bit extra fun for my sister. So please, tell me how I'm narcissistic for wanting to bring a little excitement to a child's day.
