Not quite sure where this happened, maybe it was Colombia. I saw a documentary a few weeks ago about the same issue (was a country in South America, but can't really say if it was Ecuador, Peru or Colombia). Those mines were used by the locals to earn some money. Then the state sold the rights to an Australian company and with that the locals needed to leave.
So, I guess it's not really about the environment...
