Cedric Robinson, born on this day in 1940, was the author of "Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition" and a professor of Black Studies and Political Science at the University of California, Santa Barbara (UCSB).

Robinson's areas of interest included political philosophy, radical social theory in the African diaspora, comparative politics, and the relationships between and among media and politics.

According to Professor Robin D.G. Kelley, "[Robinson's] monumental Black Marxism: The Making of the Black Radical Tradition (1983) takes Karl Marx to task for failing to comprehend radical movements outside of Europe. He rewrites the history of the West from ancient times to the mid-twentieth century, scrutinizing the idea that Marx’s categories of class can be universally applied outside of Europe. Instead he characterized black rebellions as expressions of what he called the 'Black Radical Tradition', movements whose objectives and aspirations confounded Western social analysis. Marxism also failed to account for the racial character of capitalism."

In a critical review of the work, authors William I. Robinson, Salvador Rangel and Hilbourne A. Watson state "Black Marxism has become a favored text with which to badger radical intellectuals and activists who place a premium on proletarian struggle. This has led some among left organizers to fear they may be condemned as Eurocentric, as 'class reductionists', and as 'ignoring race' should they place a premium on class analysis, should they insist that racism is an outcome of class exploitation, and that its eradication involves a transnational and pan-ethnic proletarian struggle against capitalism...At a time when global capital is on an all-out rampage against the global working and popular classes and when our very survival is under threat, we need more than ever a transnational revolutionary proletarian politics. We won’t find that in Black Marxism."

"Racism, I maintain, was not simply a convention for ordering the relations of European to non-European peoples but has its genesis in the 'internal' relations of European peoples."

Werewolfs Werewolfs - Novo General Thread for the 21st-31st of October 2026 thelastaxolotl [he/him]M to Chapotraphouse •

In folklore, a werewolf[a] (from Old English werwulf 'man-wolf'), or occasionally lycanthrope[b] (from Ancient Greek λυκάνθρωπος 'wolf-human'), is an individual who can shapeshift into a wolf or therianthropic hybrid wolf–humanlike creature, either voluntarily or involuntarily due to a curse or other affliction. In modern fiction, especially film, transformations are often depicted as triggered by the full moon and transmitted by a bite or scratch from another werewolf. Early sources for belief in this ability or affliction, called lycanthropy, are Petronius (27–66) and Gervase of Tilbury (1150–1228).

The werewolf is a widespread concept in European folklore, existing in many variants, which are related by a common development of a Christian interpretation of underlying European folklore developed during the Middle Ages. From the early modern period, werewolf beliefs spread to the Western Hemisphere with colonialism. Belief in werewolves developed in parallel with the belief in witches during the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. Like the witchcraft trials as a whole, the trial of supposed werewolves emerged in what is now Switzerland, especially the Valais and Vaud, in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe in the 16th, peaking in the 17th and subsiding by the 18th century.

The persecution of werewolves and the associated folklore is an integral part of the "witch-hunt" phenomenon, albeit a marginal one, with accusations of lycanthropy being involved in only a small fraction of witchcraft trials. During the early period, accusations of lycanthropy (transformation into a wolf) were mixed with accusations of wolf-riding or wolf-charming. The case of Peter Stumpp (1589) led to a significant peak in both interest in and persecution of supposed werewolves, primarily in French-speaking and German-speaking Europe. The phenomenon persisted longest in Bavaria and Austria, with the persecution of wolf-charmers recorded until well after 1650, the final cases taking place in the early 18th century in Carinthia and Styria.

After the end of the witch trials, the werewolf became of interest in folklore studies and in the emerging Gothic horror genre. Werewolf fiction as a genre has premodern precedents in medieval romances (e.g., Bisclavret and Guillaume de Palerme) and developed in the 18th century out of the "semi-fictional" chapbook tradition. The trappings of horror literature in the 20th century became part of the horror and fantasy genre of modern popular culture.

I wont name it but it is really helpful to see this lovecraftian horror and realize that there's nothing you can do. You know better, you know what needs to happen but humanity won't be able to do it on time. Instead of being a peice of shit about it and mope about it, you can choose to live the best you can with consideration that you're living in the end of the world.

Im not going to live to the end of my natural life and towards the end the world will just get worse and worse. Im not going to let it stop me.

I'm going to be kind, I'm not going to let this stuff mess with my brain, I'm going to be helpful, I'm going to enjoy life. I'm not going to worry about traditional milestones and just make up ones that make me happy and dont hurt anyone.

It does seem kinda weird to me how they fawn over cartoons. Like, that cartoon rat girl could have an ass exactly as big or as small as she wants. It isn't a real ass. You can jerk off to the cartoon ass all you want but please reassure me that you understand it's a drawing of an ass, the person you've formed this parasocial bond with probably has a completely average body like any other you see on the street when your mom forces you to come with her to buy groceries

If I wanted to avoid some social commitment I wish I could just by saying "I'm sorry - I can't. I'm stuck in a temporal anomaly." I wish life was like Star Trek.

Just watched Dr. Strangelove. 3 movies in 2 days, I gotta slow down. Also the movie is pretty good. I took an intro to polisci class, and the professor kept using the movie and the idea of a doomsday device to teach about diplomacy. It was strange. Love.

    doomsday device

The crazy thing is that in the 1950s before Dr. Strangelove came out - the physicist Edward Teller proposed an actual doomsday device called Sundial. The project was above top secret and it was never made. Eventually some information leaked out. This Youtube vid makes necessary wild guesses and it might have been purely theoretical in the 1950s and 60s. But with today's tech maybe many countries could build it if they wanted to.

Well, my time working with Brown University on the new rehab program is over. Honestly the worst possible time for this to end. I just feel really empty and depressed now. This was one of the few things in my life that was actually, no question, good.

After what happened to me right outside of my work, like hundreds of feet away. I've become extremely disillusioned with food service. Food service was something I could be passionate about because I had an extraordinarily high baseline level of love for someone just being human. I wanted to bring joy to people's lives before this, I guess a part of me still did with me being so disappointed in my job with Brown being done. But with my job now being to serve people that were bystanders to a violent crime and one of the worst things to happen to me in a decade, I don't care enough to do the small quality things I used to. I don't take pride in my work anymore

Photo of David Heinemeier Hansson also known as DHH at a presentation standing in front of a screen that states boot time dropped from 1.2 seconds to 0.8 seconds. Text underneath this header states "engineering time: 900 hours." Mr. Hansson wears an "Omarchy"shirt

DHH is now officially the posterchild for every incel bloatcel linux user. I don't even know if he knows how systemd works.

Hey @dhh we can probably shave serious time off Omarchy boot time by stripping defensive defaults. Right now, mkinitcpio packs hundreds of unused drivers into the initramfs; forcing hostonly shrinks it from 150MB to under 15MB. Masking NetworkManager-wait-online also stops the boot from blocking when offline. (https://nitter.tiekoetter.com/ReinierButot/status/2056086590473044452)

Went to a friend's birthday party last night, ended up being a relationship therapist at 6am. However, like I said earlier this week, I'm leaving behind the people who don't give enough of a fuck to put anything back into the relationship. Woke up this morning and they asked me what my plan is for getting home since I was 30 miles from home. I was supposed to get paid $100 by a friend this morning to cover the Uber home and they fell through. Well, the friends I was being BDSM relationship therapist for actually appreciated what I did for them and they called a $40 Uber home for me. It's nice to have people that give a fuck

Getting so stressed at work lately. Some of it is that I'm coming off my meds but there's alsoa deadline looming and the people I work with are genuinely exhausting. I'm just on edge for hours and the moment I'm off I can't bare to do anything but sit at my laptop. It's a shitty cycle.

    My Star Trek hot takes.

The TNG movies are all bad. Even First Contact, it's a soulless action movie cashgrab. I don't consider them canon, they're tales from various parallel universes.

The TOS movies are all good. Even Final Frontier. Sure it's silly, but lots of great TOS episodes were also silly. The Kirk/Spock/McCoy found family dynamic is in peak form.

DS9's battle episodes are boring. "Sacrifice of Angels" is like watching paint dry, it's just hundreds of copied-and-pasted CGI starships blowing up after taking a few shots. If I want to watch a tense starship battle episode with high stakes and emotional consequences and interesting character growth I'd rather rewatch "Balance of Terror".

Ezri is far more interesting than Jadzia.

Janeway killing Tuvix wasn't wrong because it was murder, it was wrong because it brought back Neelix.

Giant Trekkie and I agree. Ds9 had new cgi toys they wanted to play with. If Exri had more time I think people would agree.

My favorite TNG movie is Insurrection but even that one isnt great. First Contact is hella over rated, I do like it for the most part cause I feel the Trek series should get ine action schlock movie and Frakes killed it as a director. That is a snappy film. But its not what I go to star trek for.

Voyager is just steeped in issues
