Crazy progress happening crazy fast. Some people are already porting Switch 2 games to PC via AI recompilation.

Plus, someone earlier shared Mario Kart World running on Switch 1 (albeit buggy and incomplete).

The article doesn't specify about this, but will this require a console device code like the current switch emulator this is based on does? Either way I'm not able to run this until it's runnable on cachyos

Nice, I want to play the new Ocarina of Time but didn't want to drop $500 on a new console

I know it isn't the new version, but Ship of Harkinian is great especially with HD textures and a bit of tweaking controls. Being able to make my controls like Dark Souls was pretty cool. Oh setting the camera farther back was also super nice, I forgot how close behind Link the camera was. Just finished collecting all 100 Golden Skulltula's this morning in fact.

to add: quiver launcher makes ports like ship of harkinian super easy to install and run.

SoH took like 1 minute to get working, I downloaded it, added my legally obtained ROM, then started it.

Ok I briefly looked into Quiver Launcher it seems super neat. I'll need to look into this longer later.

Same. OoT is one of my favorite Zeldas (next to MM, LA, WW, and Minish C), but no way am I spending hundreds just for two games. I really hope MKW has online play cause if so I'm beyond thrilled.

I wanna play that singleplayer Splatoon that came out. Pretty sure I'm the only person in the world that wanted there to be a single player Splatoon game; the Splat 2 campaign is one of my favorite games ever. But that's literally the only 1 game I would play on a Switch 2 so it's time for emulator

You're not alone, I've always been interested in Splatoon but I'm really not into competitive multiplayer games. I ended up getting a Switch 2 basically to play Splatoon Raiders and have no regrets, it's a wonderful game.

Can't wait for the new Ocarina of Time to eventually get a randomizer. OoT randomizer is some of the most fun I've ever had with Zelda.

You got me curious, what’s a randomizer?

It takes variables in the game and randomly swaps then around. So the special key you need for the last area might now be in a chest at the beginning of the game. Or the first boss might now be in the middle of the game.

It's great to add some extra surprise in a game. Even just watching streams of it is great. There's some good randomiser race streams where you get a 4 way split screen.

OoT in particular has randomizer options that go crazy far. Randomize every bush drop, randomize temple entrances, randomize enemy placement, enemy size, randomize enemy souls to find in the world before they appear and can be fought (including bosses), randomize sound effects / sound tracks / voices, randomize where doors lead, randomize Triforce pieces to find in the world and win the game... And they keep track of what's "in logic / out of logic" or not and let you toggle that, if you can't do any glitch (bomb hover, ocarina bottle, weirdshot and such) then you want to be able to finish "in logic" meaning what you currently have is always enough to get the next item that will let you progress until the end without using glitches.

It's for people who know the game inside and out including glitches and play it a thousand times.

Uncoupled entrance/exits is one of the crazier settings for those intimately familiar with the game. Figuring out a route on the fly based on the items you have is one thing, but not knowing where any given level transition will take you makes it extremely difficult to know what is even available.

You exit Link's house at the beginning which takes you into the windmill, then you leave out the same door you came in from and you're exiting from the fishing pond at lake hylia. Knowing you need to be somewhere is no longer the same as knowing how to get there.

Basically what the other users said. To contribute my own 2¢, it turns the game into a different sort of puzzle. There is a bit of assuming that you have some prior knowledge of the game to know what the various tools you get allow you to do, but it basically boils down to "What can I do right now with the tools I have?"

Getting some later game items allows you to sorta "sequence break", where you can go and do things a bit earlier than expected. Maybe you don't have a bow yet, so you can't beat Forest Temple, but you do have the Mirror Shield and all of the keys for Spirit Temple, so maybe you go there first to do as much as you can. And if you're lucky, maybe one of the chests in Spirit Temple will have your bow.

Nintendo could release a desktop game launcher/store like the Steam store or the Epic game store. I mean, they could just release their games on Steam, but I get that they don't want to pay Valve 30%. So they should release their own desktop client so people can play Nintendo first party titles on PC. But, they won't. So, emulation will continue.

The problem with that is, that this makes it less likely to sell consoles. These companies get lot of money from third party games, and they need to sell a lot of consoles. And at this point, exclusivity seems to be the only working strategy for consoles. Do I like it? No. I won't buy another Nintendo console, stopped doing decades ago. I rather not play those games, or wait until they can be emulated or are de/recompiled.

I played Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom on Yuzu. Both together I think close to 400 hours. If Nintendo sold the games on PC, even if its their own launcher, I would probably have purchased it.

There are really only two console manufacturers left, Sony and Nintendo, and only Nintendo never allows any of their first party titles to come to PC, ever. Not all PS5 exclusives come to PC, but many, if not most, do get ported to PC, at least eventually. Permanent console exclusivity really is a dying practice, as it should be.

Not anymore unfortunately, Sony said this year they'll stop porting their games to PC at all. There might be exceptions to live service games but don't expect any of their games on PC anymore.

As Gaben said "Piracy is a service problem". Unfortunately for Nintendo, if they won't the people will. I am not a fan of most AI stuff but the whole LLM powered de/recompilation thing this year has been wild to see. I don't think it has dawned on Nintendo and Sony yet that their castle walls are being torn down and their hardware exclusivity isn't going to hold like it has in the past.

I see that Microsoft is trying to please the hoards with Xbox labs but it feels like desperation rather than acceptance.

This is potentially cool but from what I know the source code hasn't been released so it can't be fact checked.

I wonder how they did it. As I understand it the way this usually goes is finding a vulnerability but there‘s nothing mentioned. Of course nowadays there‘s a chance it was just vibe coded and the person who submitted it doesn‘t know how it was achieved. Anyway, a first crappy build is the first step of emulating any hardware and now it‘s out. It will only improve from here.

As I understand it the way this usually goes is finding a vulnerability but there‘s nothing mentioned.

It wasn't mentioned because it was already disclosed and people are already using it, it's extremely popular. The Switch 2 was jailbroken using SmileBASIC as a userland exploit plus a filesystem exploit for privilege escalation. If the game can run in a jailbroken Switch, you can decrypt and dump it.

Then as far as emulation is concerned, the Switch 2 is just a Switch 1 with a newer Nvidia chip, updating the emulators isn't that hard.

Seems similar to GameCube/Wii in that case, which is how Dolphin supports both.

Wondering then if any of the more prominent Switch 1 emulators can be updated to support both Switch 1 and Switch 2.

Well, it was hard enough because it still needed some work and about 18 months to get to a crappy build but yeah, it it was a matter of time. Now it only has to be good and released on Linux. Also just a matter of time.

Is anyone surprised? Switch 2 is very similar to Switch 1, so they don't need to start from scratch. If Nintendo doesn't start from scratch, so doesn't the community. :-)
