The original is dated graphically, but you gotta realize it was basically the first ever cinematic game of its kind.

And the game shipped on 3 CDs. Kids these days don't know we had to change disks mid gameplay. :D For us in Germany FF7 was even the first Final Fantasy we got ever as an official release! I played FF6 before and this new game with pre-rendered background, 3D battle graphics and CGI sequences was truly next gen. But at that time videogames were still for freaks in Germany and there was only a handful people playing RPGs.

Also I loved to search the internet in the local libraries computers for websites that lists data on the game, hunt hidden stuff and find animated GIFs to save them on my floppy disk.. oh yes the floppy...

Although I wonder what the new version introduces…

My hope is, to get rid of the online service connection requirement. Right after the announcement, the game could not be started anymore. Hours later it worked again, but shows it depends on the servers of Square:

I say the Remake is basically a complete new game. It shouldn't have been called Remake, but more like "Inspired by". You don't need to play the original game in my opinion, if you want to play the Remake. To me those are two separate games. And that comes from someone who says the original FF7 is the best videogame of all time.

So basically like any other forum. At least there is not much over moderation compared to Reddit or worse, Discord in example. I am reporting posts and comments all the time, and get messages from time to time that action has been done. I can see the accounts being banned (public info) and comments or posts being removed. But usually I am only active in forums with lot of activity, so not sure how this compares to less active communities. There is a screenshot of a confirmation reporting a discussion post:

They are mocking us.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 1 points 13 hours ago

But CS2 is basically Global Offensive. They "just" ported it over to the new engine. All items were kept and you didn't need to buy your items again, as it is the same account. Overwatch 2 on the other hand changed the entire formula (5v5 instead 6v6) and introduced lot of new game types and modes. So it's not exactly the same situation. Having said this, I wish Valve would have created a new game id and store page for the new version of the game. Such a shame.

I play Marvel Rivals almost every day. Compared to Overwatch, it's more casual and fun oriented, not that balanced at all. And its in third person, not first person. While Rivals has some Overwatch energy and can be played as a replacement, it is not a full replacement. And no other of these games will probably reach peak Overwatch and does not have the same charm.

BTW I recently installed Team Fortress 2 Classified, a mod that got its own Steam store page. It has lot of stuff from early TF2 days recreated and looks very interesting. Still need to try it out.

The older videos explicitly tested early alpha and beta versions. Meanwhile it is already released as official version with their distribution. Off course there might be quirks (like KDE has in example), but its ready for productive use.

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 6 points 21 hours ago

You probably meant "DE" instead "IDE" (i was confused first, but think its a typo). You should look in YouTube videos to get an idea of what it is and how it works. I would say, its something GNOME 3 inspired by its look and design, but with functionality and customization inspired by KDE. Some parts might be still under cooked, as it is still early. The question is, why do you want change from KDE? This information would be crucial to give a recommendation. And only you can answer it. Maybe try it out in a virtual machine before committing installation on your main system.

How is the free part not working? FOSS is the cure of the industry. Or do you think Adobe and Microsoft is working that great? Imagine if we didn't have FOSS...

[-] thingsiplay@lemmy.ml 16 points 23 hours ago

But they answered the question. Valve can only guarantee that games are compatible with Steam Overlay compatible games. They don't want to commit to a "yes" or "no" for stuff outside Steam, and then be liable for that answer if it does not work as advertised and then get sued to the ground. So you cannot blame them.

I don't know on Windows, but on Linux you most likely can use the controller to play on any game. It's just not supported and guaranteed by Valve.

Am I the only one who thinks that Nvidia is analyzing the gameplay footage you play, to feed their Ai tools? And you login with your account in their cloud, in example your Steam account. They have access to everything theoretically. The Ai can analyze everything...

I was about to try the free tier to play games that do not work on Linux. Streaming could be a way to at least play some of the games I could not otherwise. The cool thing is, I have full access to my Steam library and do not need to buy games for this service. But I really dislike the idea that Nvidia could use all of the information to feed their Ai.

Brodie a Linux YouTuber uploaded a video about a project, I was not aware off: Software Heritage. It is basically for code, what Internet Archive is for websites. If you want watch Brodies video as an introduction: https://inv.nadeko.net/watch?v=MUA9Fu4jNGY or YouTube directly https://youtu.be/MUA9Fu4jNGY

We are building the universal software archive

We collect and preserve software in source code form, because software embodies our technical and scientific knowledge and humanity cannot afford the risk of losing it.

Software is a precious part of our cultural heritage. We curate and make accessible all the software we collect, because only by sharing it we can guarantee its preservation in the very long term.
