It’s been on my ‘one of those days’ list for years now, and with Resonance out, they ran a $6 Steam sale for the original which put it in the impulse buy category. Fast forward a week and I’m out of town for work with some hotel time to kill so hooked my Steamdeck up to the TV and gave it a go and wow… I see what the hype is about.

Any non spoiler tips, tricks, or things I should be on the lookout for?

I just finished the first game this week. Super great game that I was surprised kept my attention. I've been in a "game funk" over the last couple years where I have not found something that kept my attention. Control did, and now I'm onto the sequel.

Pay attention! Remedy is like the Twin Peaks of video game studios so paying attention to the plot as well as reading everything in the appendices and the documents uncover is vital.

Also HIGHLY recommend playing Alan Wake and Alan Wake 2 if you haven’t already. Same studio and a connected universe!

Well that explains why I couldn't get into it, despite being a big fan of the first Alan Wake; I'm way too ADHD for this game. Couldn't enjoy Alan Wake 2, either; it's too complicated for me.

Read/watch everything. Maybe after dealing with an object of power, there'll be a slightly redacted memo about it. There's inner office politics in other memos.

The world building is absolutely amazing if you choose to be patient and read everything you can.

One of the best intros to a video game. Everything is designed as a specific narrative hook that really wants you to draw you in as much as possible. Even if you don't want to follow all of them, you will be incredibly curious about some of them.

The director pictures at the beginning really got me.

Have you ever tried buying a key to save some bucks (because you're a fucking cheapskate), redeem it...only to get greeted by "you already own this game"?

Then I usually gift the key to my bff. She thinks I'm such a generous nice guy, but sadly I'm just a dumb fuck that buys twice. Too often.

And I have learned nothing from it. Once I even bought the same key AGAIN the next day. I would actually save money buying directly on steam...

I loved it, it’s a pretty unique experience. But to be totally honest, I hated it until I messed with the assist mode settings. So my personal tip, which is definitely not for everyone, is to completely customize those settings as much as you want. Some of the default combat and QOL features are way off in my opinion, and once I got over the shame of changing some fundamental settings, the game opened way up for me and I was able to get completely into the story.

The devs added the settings a year or two after the game’s release, so they must have been getting a lot of feedback.

Enjoy! You’re in for a wild ride.

What did you change? I played with mouse+kb and found it to be pretty easy tbh. Only some occasional Board Countermeasures seemed to be a bit unbalanced at the beginning.

Yeah, I'm with you on this, and wish I had done so in hindsight. The gameplay was interesting for about a couple of hours, but ultimately I think the game's more about the graphics in the quieter moments--although as a raytracing showcase, it's less impressive now than it was in 2019--and the wacky stuff it comes up with than anything.

Control's combat mechanics are made specifically so that enemies hit you less the faster you're moving. So picking up momentum and keeping it as much as you can is a solid strategy. Sometimes I simply run around in circles when low on health, trying to get some easy kill or find more health somewere. It works surprisingly well.

Also, Throw is OP in general. A little trick I only recently learned myself: You can pick up something from behind an enemy and have it hit them as it floats towards you.

    Have fun! :)

This is one of the few games I’ve played where I’m constantly hoping to find new random scraps of paper. One of the most interesting places to explore.

Control is fantastic! I'm really excited to pick up Resonance soon, and I've been trying not to spoil myself too much on it.

As for tips, a lot of things can be done in any order, so if you find yourself dying over and over to a certain encounter, go look for some side-objectives to do and level up a bit, then come back and take down that thing that was kicking your ass.

I own this game across five storefronts and have never paid for it. I liked it, but ran out of steam and didn't finish.

I stopped playing about 8 hours in. In my experience it was like that review of Pride and Prejudice that said "it's just people going to other people's houses."

The game really rewards being aggressive. There's a reason enemies drop health pickups where they die - keep moving and take advantage of that.

I felt so bad for getting this game for free on EGS that I ended up buying it when it hit Steam. That's how good this game is.

I found the game got more and more fun the further into the game I got, since more abilities started being unlocked that added much more variety to the gameplay.

I really ended up loving it by the time I finished it.

One of the best games of all time. You don't need any tips. Just explore and play. Try different guns. Try different abilities. Look around environments to appreciate how amazing the areas look.

If you’re playing with a controller, don’t be ashamed to go into the optional settings to make aiming easier. I absolutely suck at fps games on controller, the aim assist was crucial for me to enjoy playing. I’m glad I did because this game is amazing!

I didn't make it very far at all because of not knowing what I was supposed to do. My ADHD requires some kind of direction at the beginning of a game because I cannot retain enough information to make choices from failing a bunch of things and not knowing why.

Same reason I bounced off Elden Ring. I just don't notice the things the designers expect me to the first 50 times I try something. It is like trying to find a thing without knowing what it is.

I don't consider what I'm about to say a spoiler, but some people might.

spoilerThere is a part of this game that is going to knock your socks off. It raised my bar for how good a section of a game could be. It's up there with the intro to Ocarina of Time, sneaking into the second building in Into the Radius where things finally started to click but I was still scared shitless, and the lake scene in FFX, carved into my soul.

Once you've gotten to that part, let me know because I just like going back and forth about how incredible it is. If you get through a part of the game and wonder if you've gotten there, you haven't gotten there yet. When you get there, you won't wonder.

Just started this week. It's fun and atmospheric. But I hate the darkness and screen mobbing of effects. Like it gets so bad that you can't see shit during a fight and somehow fall down endless voids that exist for reasons.
