In folklore, a werewolf[a] (from Old English werwulf 'man-wolf'), or occasionally lycanthrope[b] (from Ancient Greek λυκάνθρωπος 'wolf-human'), is an individual who can shapeshift into a wolf or therianthropic hybrid wolf–humanlike creature, either voluntarily or involuntarily due to a curse or other affliction. In modern fiction, especially film, transformations are often depicted as triggered by the full moon and transmitted by a bite or scratch from another werewolf. Early sources for belief in this ability or affliction, called lycanthropy, are Petronius (27–66) and Gervase of Tilbury (1150–1228).

The werewolf is a widespread concept in European folklore, existing in many variants, which are related by a common development of a Christian interpretation of underlying European folklore developed during the Middle Ages. From the early modern period, werewolf beliefs spread to the Western Hemisphere with colonialism. Belief in werewolves developed in parallel with the belief in witches during the late Middle Ages and the early modern period. Like the witchcraft trials as a whole, the trial of supposed werewolves emerged in what is now Switzerland, especially the Valais and Vaud, in the early 15th century and spread throughout Europe in the 16th, peaking in the 17th and subsiding by the 18th century.

The persecution of werewolves and the associated folklore is an integral part of the "witch-hunt" phenomenon, albeit a marginal one, with accusations of lycanthropy being involved in only a small fraction of witchcraft trials. During the early period, accusations of lycanthropy (transformation into a wolf) were mixed with accusations of wolf-riding or wolf-charming. The case of Peter Stumpp (1589) led to a significant peak in both interest in and persecution of supposed werewolves, primarily in French-speaking and German-speaking Europe. The phenomenon persisted longest in Bavaria and Austria, with the persecution of wolf-charmers recorded until well after 1650, the final cases taking place in the early 18th century in Carinthia and Styria.

After the end of the witch trials, the werewolf became of interest in folklore studies and in the emerging Gothic horror genre. Werewolf fiction as a genre has premodern precedents in medieval romances (e.g., Bisclavret and Guillaume de Palerme) and developed in the 18th century out of the "semi-fictional" chapbook tradition. The trappings of horror literature in the 20th century became part of the horror and fantasy genre of modern popular culture.

Remember when cup stacking was a brief thing? My school at the time decided to spend like 800 bucks on cup stacking cups which we were forced to play with during gym class even though no one liked it. There was so much normal gum equipment that needed replacing instead.

The land of giants that you never go to in demon's souls is really just the land of dark souls that got cut off from that game. Seeing the spin off series dark souls get so huge with lore vids and communities online is funny seeing how none of them even played demon's souls. The real connection to bloodborne was never to dark souls but demon souls since in both you can ascend and rid yourself of your mortal coil

I imported Demon's Souls before many knew of it's existence. Parrying Satsuki 16 times in a row was a highlight. World tendency should have been a series staple.

Love it unironically, made playing it in different ways a joy instead of the streamline stuff dark souls started going down

I just feel like dark souls squished a lot of things that made demon's souls unique to have more of an appeal. As the games progressed the combat became more and more of a focus to the point fromsoft just ended up making night reign which just looks like the combat only without the world building. A lot of the fights ended up just feeling sad or strange and I liked that here, you're fighting twisted people not almighty false gods.

I agree with that. I like Demons Souls and the first Dark Souls the most. But it did feel some of the more unique fights had more to them in the earlier games. As the series went on there is a lot of repeats. I had a no hit Artorias fight being a highlight which In 3 had a similar vibe to the Abyss Watchers with another no hit fight so those are what stand out for me over the Trilogy. I feel the level progression in Dark was my favourite over all but I really enjoyed the start of Demon's Souls. Going in completely blind was a fun time.

Had a friend from here that I haven't heard from since March reach out today and I just instantly started bawling happy tears because I missed them so much. I live in the Midwest, there aren't a lot of people that fully understand me around here. This person lives on the other side of the globe and I haven't heard from them since March and I would still consider them one of the greatest friends I've had throughout my entire life. They disappeared off this site a while ago, mostly due to mental health issues. They still send me money on mutual aid from time to time because they know I'm eternally financially struggling but also helping out anybody around me I can. Ever since they got off Signal, I've sent them a message every few weeks letting them know I'm thinking of and I love them. I didn't want them to think I ever forgot about us and the friendship we have

I've posted about them a few times, but the only time I've ever explicitly mentioned their username since then was when someone tried to bring their name up in a struggle session and was just assuming shit about them. I was fucking livid and mentioned our close relationship to dispel the shit they tried to claim about my friend in the struggle session. Like they're not on this site anymore because they're depressed, keep their goddamn name out of your mouth. This is someone I'd say I love on the level of a sibling, so hearing other people put words in their mouth really enraged me.

One of the mutual aid things they did was hand out copies of the game Webfishing so they could offer their peer support skills to our community. Them and I used to play Webfishing all the time, we planned on stopping when the liquor store by my apartment closed (this was pre-rehab days) but would always go hours after the fact. They're truly an amazing person and someone I aspire to be like. They used to have the best effort posts on the site

I saw You Can See Everything. Would recommend, actually didnt mind seeing it in theatres vrs waiting for streaming or home release

spoilerFielder is still playing his dopey character schtick but I do think he started to develop feelings for Holmes, and I think partially because he wanted to see how she was able to dupe people so he let her?

I was shocked by the number of people in the after movie crowd talking about feeling for Holmes. I get it, she definitely was taken advantage of one time (I wont go into it but its a very bad thing to happen to someone). She's a jackal, a viper, a fraudster and thief, a manipulator. Her rictus grin plastered on her face constantly was scarier than it was charming or disarming.

Part of it is I have a PhD in her kind of manipulation, and Billy's, because its exactly how my dad manipulates. Like to a tee. Some of those interviews reminded so much of being 11 and confused and terrified. She just had the more feminine aspect of it.

I aint buying this narrative that "oh shes like some ND ingenue taken in by rich and powerful men and really believed in Theranos" no she knew what she was doing, she was in charge, she knew her tech didnt work and she knew it would be bad for patients and put it out there in the world despite that. All the tears (on command!) didnt fool me - she was sad she had to face a modicum of justice with jail time and lucky it was just for defrauding investors.

I am so fucking exhausted with explaining basic concepts every fucking time I socialize. I can’t tell if doing mindless platonic questioning of “But why?” over and over again makes them feel rebel intellectuals, but it feels like I’m talking to four year olds. I just want to hang out with someone normal. I’m losing my fucking mind.

Opening youtube or reddit without signing in

    dead-dove-2

    dead-dove-3

Although I have to say, I've noticed that youtube has gotten less and less tightly curated the past few months after having everything dialed in pretty well the past 3-4 years. I get way more AI slop suggestions as well as more right-wing content. I'm sure reddit would probably be about the same if I had to scroll more to find content from whatever niche hobby communities I'm subscribed to.

I only use youtube via RSS feed these days and block all algorithmic content / suggestions. Way better experience. You can optionally turn off your watch history to stop it from 'learning' from what you watch

Cineplex in Canada is doing theatre screenings of Heated Rivalry. I'll be seeing it for the first time. I picked the 5+ hour marathon, seeing it with a friend. This will be fun.
