My weekly preamble is in spoiler tags below.

preamble

To start as usual with the West Asia, I get the sense that we're once again teetering on the edge of war between the US/Zionists and Iran, with Iran putting itself on high alert and conducting a major military exercise using dozens of ballistic missiles. I greatly struggle to see for what possible reason the US would try and attack Iran again when it's been repeatedly proven that it simply isn't going to work and that the consequences you receive are much worse than the damage you deal. The only conceivable motivation is a near-manic short-term desperation to try and bend the curve upwards on upcoming electoral results. Trump apparently covertly asked Iran if he could symbolically bomb Pickaxe Mountain without retribution and was denied - for those unaware, it's a site in central Iran where the US speculates Iran is rapidly creating a nuclear enrichment facility for nefarious purposes.

The situation in Yemen continues its positive trend for Ansarallah, with their forces now entering Taiz proper after having taken all the territory around it, while also cementing their hold on the coastal plains near the Red Sea by taking some of the mountainous heights there. Egypt has made signals that it may get involved militarily, joining the club of countries that are trying and failing to stop Ansarallah. It's a situation that, if you'll excuse an imprecise historical comparison, is reminiscent of the situation in the then-newborn USSR, where an international coalition tried and failed to save the losing, reactionary side of the civil war there. With oil and transportation infrastructure getting hit all the time and various international meetings and summits getting cancelled and MBS seeming (rightfully) quite paranoid, the Saudi position is looking increasingly untenable. It has similarities with the Zionist entity in late 2023 - their choice is to stop their genocide, engage in diplomacy, and survive a bit longer; or continue their genocide and, in the process, anger everybody, and risk being destroyed in the process.

I admit that it took about two months longer than I predicted, but the spark that was the US attacking Iran is now a conflagration spreading around the world. Several of the protests didn't begin due to problems with fossil fuel supplies, to be clear, but it's certainly contributing to the public anger in pretty much every case. It's hard for me to even be aware of all the protests and riots going on, let alone mention them, let alone analyse them, so to just go through a smattering of the ones that have received a lot of press coverage, we have: France, which began as students protesting an idiotic attempt at education reform and now involves at least over 500,000 and perhaps closer to a million people; in Albania, where protestors are demanding the resignation of their Prime Minister and are now burning down state buildings; in Italy, Portugal, and Belgium, which are simultaneously protesting education and/or austerity; massive protests in India which began months ago due to economic hardship in general and the Chief Justice calling the unemployed "cockroaches" in particular; in Indonesia, with protestors angry at the lack of a meaningful response to the extreme wildfires; in Pakistan, protesting the slide into de facto dictatorship under Army Chief Asim Munir; and lots of smaller scale protests and strikes around the world usually consisting of people who directly depend on diesel (truckers, farmers, etc) who simply cannot afford to keep working while fuel is so expensive.

Without the influence of socialist organizations, it's likely that many protests will be at least temporarily repressed; however, while the situation in the Middle East goes unresolved and the Zionists continue to refuse to accept Iran's conditions, Lenin's dictum of "every society is three meals away from chaos" may start to apply regardless. We're still at least a good few months away from that in most countries, but the trend line is definitely visible.

    Telegram caption translated:

This is what the war in Iran looks like for ordinary people. Supermarket shelves in southern Italy sit empty because truckers and farmers have blocked roads—protesting the high cost of diesel, which they can no longer afford to pay. Deliveries have stopped, shelves are bare, and people say they can no longer make ends meet. Today, similar pressures are fueling protests in France as well. Trump keeps saying that once the war ends, prices will plummet. The problem is, no one knows when that day will come. ✍🏼

So it's the effects of workers going on strike causing this (albeit dramatic-looking) shortage. This is just what happens when your supply chain goes on strike or gets disrupted internally, it's hardly worth the alarming title lol. For all we know this is just a single store.

I saw the same empty shelves in my local Co-Op when they were subject to a cyber attack that fucked up their distribution network. I saw the same in Covid lockdowns due to panic buying of specific goods, and supply chains adapting to new regulations.

    * ^In reality Iranian markets or grocery stores arent barren like this, so the comparison is a bit moot. Perhaps idk pharmacies?^

I wrote a comment about this, it's definetly not just a single store.

It's true that the shortages started because of an unrelated well-placed workers' strike, but the government now has to promise to get the fuel situation back to normal in this world environment. Even if it manages to do so right now, how long can it last?

  • source

  • [–] 3 points 33 minutes ago

Yup, things have been going on since last week when striking workers of the "ex-ILVA" steel plant in Taranto (the ILVA situation is a whole complex mess I won't get into) cut off a local refinery causing severe fuel shortages in the Southern Italian regions of Puglia, Basilicata and Calabria. Shelves have been progressively emptying there for days, many gas stations had to stay closed, alongside several other interruptions of services like public transport.

Because of high fuel prices the strikes are now multiplying, especially involving transport workers and farmers (an EU classic). Last week things were already bad in the south but the news underreported it, perhaps they were waiting for the strikes to end and everything to go back to normal, but the fuel shortage hit immediately and hard, and now even threatens to spread nationwide.

This is not even related to the unrest you are seeing from places like Milan

::: spoiler Qalibaf, addressing Asim Munir:

❌ "We have nothing new to say, and America cannot earn Iran's trust except by implementing the seven conditions."

🔖 Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf, in a meeting with Asim Munir held Tuesday evening at Baharestan (Iranian Legislative Assembly), referred to the fraternal relations between Iran and Pakistan and expressed his appreciation and thanks for the solidarity of the Pakistani people and government, who stood alongside Iran through conditions of war and negotiation.

📌 Asim Munir, responding to the follow-up by the Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly regarding border exchanges between the two countries, said that the border issues had been temporary and technical, and that the border between the two countries has been open since today.

📌 At this meeting, Qalibaf, referring to the negotiations that took place between Iran and the United States in Islamabad, said: "I said there explicitly, addressing the US Vice President, that America's long record of negative actions against Iran before and after our Islamic Revolution has placed us in a state of peak distrust toward America. And now, with the Trump administration's violation of the Islamabad Memorandum, his repeated threats have built that edifice of distrust higher than before."

📌 "We have nothing new to say, and America cannot earn Iran's trust except by implementing Iran's seven conditions, which were presented in New York."

📌 "We are not warmongers, but we are fully prepared to defend our homeland and our national dignity. Threats and military movements cannot influence the strategic decisions of the Islamic Republic of Iran. It was America that, through miscalculation and war against Iran, fell into the quagmire - and now it is they who must take the necessary steps to get out."

ancaptain I come for ye gold!

Grayzone - Argentina's economic demolition: Javier Milei disappears 11 TONS of gold

On October 8, National Audit Office president Juan Manuel Olmos confirmed that Argentina’s Central Bank lost $1.023 billion in gold reserves through operations that moved physical gold out of the country without the public’s consent.

The financial loss may be only part of the story. Nearly 11 tons of Argentine gold are unaccounted for. How the gold bars left the country, where they are now, and whether the government can recover them all remain open questions.

Beyond the missing gold lies a larger issue: what will remain of Argentina’s national wealth, industrial capacity, and economic sovereignty when Milei’s experiment ends?

Two updates on the French government's handling of the revolts

Two days ago (19/10), an article by the investigation media Médiapart (paywalled) showed that the government ordered information agencies to add to their reports that La France Insoumise (Mélenchon's movement) was at the origin of the current social movements and of calls for "violence," despite how according to agency members quoted in the article this is bullshit. Over the past few weeks, and especially after 17th October, the government went on to say that by calling for supporting the protests, LFI is supporting violence (despite how the reformist LFI has spent the past few weeks denouncing "violent" acts and supporting peaceful protests), on the basis of intelligence reports that were submitted to the government. Of course, the movement is not caused by LFI, and LFI is far from the only movement supporting the protests and potentially benefiting from them, with many unions and of course youth orgs arguably playing a larger role on the ground (speaking of which, the French Communist Youth Movement (MJCF) gained 1000 new members in the first few weeks of the protests). But clearly, the government believes it can use this to continue its caricature of LFI as an "anti-republican" movement, and it really seems to me that the objective is manufacturing consent for eventually dissolving LFI.

Yesterday (20/10), the official X/Shitter account of the Paris prefecture announced the creation of a dedicated platform (not a shitter link) for citizens to report "acts of violence, degradations or pillaging" directly by uploading pictures or videos. Denunciation of protestors, plain and simple! To use the platform, you have to log in with France Connect so only French citizens can use it. Anyway, it'd be a real shame if many French citizens gave fed tons of false info (AI slop for example?) to the platform.

manufacturing consent for eventually dissolving LFI.

I don't really see what that's going to do that benefits the state. The people in it are still going to exist and still be active.

If anything it might make the entire situation in France way more turbulent because some of these groups will take much more radical action. It will be seen as an anti-democratic action and give the left the ability to argue democracy is over and only revolution can restore it.

A bit like how proscribing Palestine Action didn't actually make anything better, Elbit factories are still being destroyed and a tonne of people radicalised to the point that you've got 80 year old supporters of PA being arrested on a weekly basis in London. The proscription made the situation worse rather than better. Doing this to LFI will be similar but at a far far larger scale.

Is Macron just thinking of himself? Trying to secure his re-election? It is as dangerous a move as when Cameron called the Brexit referendum as an electoral ploy.

Is Macron just thinking of himself?

Although I'd say that Macron's personality seems to be a chaos factor that often goes against any coherent strategy for the bourgeois state, calls for dissolving LFI are becoming increasingly widespread on the right and aren't so far addressed by Macron. Gérard Larcher (of the Republican party, whose leader Retailleau calls Le Pen a "socialist") is the president of the senate (and first in line to be president if Macron resigns or is incapacitated) and he said that dissolving LFI is on the table. Other leaders of the Republicans said so too, and so did "Macronist" politicians.

If anything it might make the entire situation in France way more turbulent because some of these groups will take much more radical action. It will be seen as an anti-democratic action and give the left the ability to argue democracy is over and only revolution can restore it.

This is why I believe the situation is pre-revolutionary. The people still believe in an electoralist alternative, but if this alternative is confiscated, I don't think that LFI would just lie down and capitulate, we could instead find ourselves in the situation that Lenin described in The Collapse of the Second International:

"(1) […] For a revolution to take place, it is usually insufficient for "the lower classes not to want" to live in the old way; it is also necessary that "the upper classes should be unable" to live in the old way; (2) when the suffering and want of the oppressed classes have grown more acute than usual; (3) when, as a consequence of the above causes, there is a considerable increase in the activity of the masses, who uncomplainingly allow themselves to be robbed in "peace time", but, in turbulent times, are drawn both by all the circumstances of the crisis and by the "upper classes" themselves [emphasis his] into independent historical action."

WSJ got their hands on Anthropic's draft S1 form. It looks like Anthropic made $16 billion in revenue in the first 6 months of the year, this got them a nice cool $80 billion loss. Any normal company would instantly declare bankruptcy after these results. $2 billion of their revenue was interest income on the cash they weren't able to spend yet.

It just reminds me that the capitalists threw up their hands and started panicking when it came to real estate in 2008. Here they are in the self-valuation circle-jerk keeping 100 billion dollar funds alive through pure circle-jerking.

It makes me wonder, does one think this is an especially zealous reaction to something they believe can reverse the falling rate of profit?
