(No one ever saw him again because he starved to death in a remote gully 7 months later, in the depth of winter.)
(But on the plus side, he never had to attend another Teams meeting or see another Facebook meme.)

A woman my wife works with took in a teenage boy (a relative, but I don't remember the connection) whose mother walked into the woods one day and disappeared. Her car was found, she wasn't. I think the father had passed away already, so when the mother vanished, the kid had no one else.
Poor kid lost his mother, then had to move cross country, losing all of his friends, too. A shit situation for everyone involved.
i know someone who did that... buggered off into the qld bush to brew moonshine and grow ganja.
Every couple of years he'll hit me up on IRC and send deep cut psytrance bootlegs, fun times.
Yeah, cool, but IRC? I genuinely didn't know that was a thing anymore.
IRC never died.
Plenty of homeless camps in the woods get busted each year.
"Oh no, I'll have to pretend to leave and then move 200 meters and no one will find me for 8 months."
Really, the biggest issue is not dying. That's the thinker
When the cops bust a homeless camp... they don't just let the homeless people go. Also, after they find one, they patrol the area periodically... there are common sites they crop up. Sorry, it's just not that easy to escape to unoccupied land, that is unpoliced. It's a nice dream, but it's not the reality of the world.

i think you are mixing two things together. these homeless people are not adventurer types that want to get off the grid for the sake of it - they just don't have the roof over their head, but need to camp as close to civilization as possible, so they could still scavenge its scraps. they could go further, but there would be no supermarket to dumpster dive to.
I beg to differ:
Inb4 he got eaten by a bear several days into his new life.
good news is - after you die, they will make a movie and after seeing it, a few dozen people will try to replicate your steps and die in the process, so you will inspire quite a few people!
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Richard_Proenneke The linked person did this for a couple decades in alaska. Yearly trades with a friend who came over by seaplane and landed on the local lake. they exchanged some goods, i think Proenneke made some oils from the wilderness and the visitor brought like medicine and shoes or something. He eventually had to come back to society because he couldn't chop enough wood to keep himself warm in the winter anymore.
Richard(Dick) Filmed himself setting up and his first year or couple years. This was edited into 3 or 2 films (Alone in the wilderness). you should look for them online, they are available for free if you look in the right spots. I think there's 4 hours of edited film in total of his story.
ah, the Ted Kaszinski way, minus the bombing of course.
nonplussed character
nonplussed /nΙnΛplΚst/ The word nonplussed traditionally means surprised, confused, and unsure how to react (left at a loss for what to say or do).
TIL, if I heard this word used in a less clear context I'd assume it's like tier 3 lgbt slang or something lmao.
My plan too, was supposed to have done it by now. But I have debt thanks to my parents, and them too to take care of.
But I will start saving in secret again when I can and fuck off somewhere.
One day, no one will ever see me again, and many will certainly celebrate.
But I'd like to remind those people, they contributed to make this world unlivable in the first place.
I want to leave because there is no fair way for me to exist within the system.
Until they came to cut the forest down...
We laugh but this is what we should do

The reality in most developed nations is that people do not have the skills required anymore and even if they did the environment is not and never has been capable of supporting 8 billion apes strip foraging the wilderness. Modern farming techniques and medicine are both why the global population has exploded in the last two centuries and the loss of either will immediately devastate humanity.
Tl;Dr that shit was hard when people knew mostly what to do and you don't
Most would die within 1 month. The average is 2 weeks alone for an untrained person.
Hrm, I see this meme just prior to certain elections...
If, realistically, inspiring like 2 people worldwide to escape into the wilderness is enough to sway an election, I'll eat my shoe. There's always an upcoming election
