Cause what the fuck is this shit? Switched to it trying to get away from google, in search of some shitass search engine that doesn’t automatically use superintelligence.

I searched up some apparently common Lebanese dish and it spit out pictures of buildings. Searched it on google and it somehow actually gave me the correct answer. I thought google was ass but this is clown shit. More like sucksuckbro

"superintelligence" wtf?

anyway duckduckgo is pro-AI trash that polled its users, found that the overwhelming majority of them didn't like or want AI, and told them to piss off to some custom url that disables the AI shit instead of making it default. the results are full of LLM spam regardless of which variant you use and their AI filter doesn't work at all.

i've found dogpile to be pretty okay

    "superintelligence" wtf?

Excuse me, this is the proper nomenclature. Please refrain from using slurs such as *I

Are you being ironic? Who the hell says superintelligence except when trump insider traded .si domain names and then claimed it was the new name for AI and those domains started selling for millions of dollars

Duckduckgo gets its sources from Bing and its own collection of crawlers. I mostly use duckduckgo because they have a HTML only webpage.

If you want something else you can use a meta search engine like seaxng that indexes from Google's results or another web crawler like Brave search.

There's also Kagi which you can use for free indefinitely since they don't disallow email aliases.

    Try priv.au, searxng is customizable

DDG is just screaming of Bing with slightly less telemetry. At least you can turn the AI off, but I switched to Kagi a while ago, and it's been good.

At least you can turn the AI off,

you can click a button that says it turns off the ai

it does exactly nothing as far as i could tell

You have to pay for it, but Kagi feels like Google used to ten plus years ago. Privacy focused and no ads, so they are best served by giving you a good result quickly to get you off the site.

Nothing you pay for has any real semblance of privacy beyond "trust me bro"

To a certain extent, absolutely. But if you do want to jump through a hoop, they do have further anonymization that is cryptographically backed: https://help.kagi.com/kagi/privacy/privacy-pass.html

I am familiar with the mechanics of Privacy Pass. Both using privacy pass and publishing the source code of their implementation does inspire confidence towards their claims of search anonymity. Verifiability of the VOPRF is essential here, otherwise I would posit the deployment could be built from something other than the source code.

However, I always apply a couple layers of (probably too much) skepticism when dealing with any entity incorporated or doing business in any five eyes country.

Is there verification that Kagi doesn't do any side channel fingerprinting of the client? If so, I would actually consider paying for Kagi if the price was right. SearXNG has been becoming much less effective since the surge of AI scrapers caused everything on the web to lock down APIs.

Sadly, the last independent audit of Kagi was done in 2022 before Privacy Pass was a thing. So, we are getting a bit back into "just have to take their word for it" territory. Using a TOR browser for redemption of your token might provide enough peace of mind, but your point about any entity incorporated in a five eyes country is valid regardless.

Personally, I'm OK for what I use Kagi for to be more concerned about privacy from ad makers, web trackers and the like than I am worried about state actors for my use case. But obviously that's not everyone's.

The question of what to use for web searching comes up every couple months or so, and I always suggest using Searxng, as others like u/KnilAdlez and u/hello_hello already did in this thread. It's best if you can self host it just because you can fine tune it exactly how you want, you won't get rate limited, and it's just always slightly better privacy-wise when you do it yourself, but if you don't want to set that up, you can just go directly to one of the public instances and use that right away. You can even tweak and fine tune those a bit if you click the settings button.

But yes, DDG is terrible. The CEO even openly stated they were "deprioritizing" (in other words, hiding) any results that might include "Russian propaganda" (in other words, anything that didn't align with NATO propaganda especially regarding Ukraine). And it would be very naive to think they stopped there as far as filtering of your results based on their political alignment. They also lie about being privacy-friendly when they are anything but. However that doesn't mean you should just go back to using Google, one of the great evils of the internet, as someone else suggested, especially when you can get Google search results (and any other free engine's results) without ever having to interact with it by using Searxng.

I just use DeepSeek for searching nowadays

Same. The main use of these llms for me is just a smarter search engine, and deepseek actually pulls and aggregates results from sites in different languages... something way ahead of other search engines.

I have a searxng instance that searches yahoo, yandex, startpage, and duckduckgo and all those combined gives me good results

Is it self hosted or something? This sounds interesting.

How the fuck are you searching Yandex, are you running a chromium browser in the background to mimic calls cause I don't think Yandex can be called the same way as Google, do you have links to how I can do something similar?

Depends on need, Yandex is good for some applications such as searching for piracy related stuff

Yeah DDG has gone to shit recently. I know its just Bing underneath, but still.

I only use it because of the bangs search. I heard Kagi is really good but it is paid.

Yes, I was going to suggest this. Some search "engines" to consider (and the actual search engine index they use, as far as I recall):

    startpage.com (uses Google's index) ecosia.com (uses Bing's index)

  • I've been through this struggle. You just have to use google for good results.

There's an AI filter list in uBlock Origin you can turn on.
