Cause what the fuck is this shit? Switched to it trying to get away from google, in search of some shitass search engine that doesn’t automatically use superintelligence.

I searched up some apparently common Lebanese dish and it spit out pictures of buildings. Searched it on google and it somehow actually gave me the correct answer. I thought google was ass but this is clown shit. More like sucksuckbro

You have to pay for it, but Kagi feels like Google used to ten plus years ago. Privacy focused and no ads, so they are best served by giving you a good result quickly to get you off the site.

Nothing you pay for has any real semblance of privacy beyond "trust me bro"

To a certain extent, absolutely. But if you do want to jump through a hoop, they do have further anonymization that is cryptographically backed: https://help.kagi.com/kagi/privacy/privacy-pass.html

I am familiar with the mechanics of Privacy Pass. Both using privacy pass and publishing the source code of their implementation does inspire confidence towards their claims of search anonymity. Verifiability of the VOPRF is essential here, otherwise I would posit the deployment could be built from something other than the source code.

However, I always apply a couple layers of (probably too much) skepticism when dealing with any entity incorporated or doing business in any five eyes country.

Is there verification that Kagi doesn't do any side channel fingerprinting of the client? If so, I would actually consider paying for Kagi if the price was right. SearXNG has been becoming much less effective since the surge of AI scrapers caused everything on the web to lock down APIs.

Sadly, the last independent audit of Kagi was done in 2022 before Privacy Pass was a thing. So, we are getting a bit back into "just have to take their word for it" territory. Using a TOR browser for redemption of your token might provide enough peace of mind, but your point about any entity incorporated in a five eyes country is valid regardless.

Personally, I'm OK for what I use Kagi for to be more concerned about privacy from ad makers, web trackers and the like than I am worried about state actors for my use case. But obviously that's not everyone's.
