Discord is less a messaging platform these days as just like an open source data aggregation service for cyber criminals. It's like they have a huge data leak every 6 months or so.

Deleted my Discord a long time ago since I rarely used it, the only thing that sucks is when trying to do game jams with others it’s the only option, so I haven’t been able to do any…
But still this is better than having Discord.

Basically, it’s the worst Discord hack via a third-party service provider since the last Discord hack via a third-party service provider, which occurred almost a year to the day ago – spooky!

LOL wow that thing that everyone said would happen, happened. Again.

Oh, good. Hadn't seen a Discord data breach article in a short while so was wondering if I'd slipped into a coma. All is normal.

And yet Discord still blocks using anonaddy addresses to sign up.

If only matrix was as usable as discord I'm sure a lot of people would

Stoat chat seems pretty decent open source alternative to Discord, tried it for a while and has similar usability, but same issue, "nobody uses it", also development has been very slow.

I tried stoat, but I couldn't create the same community that I had on Discord that I had set up, so I haven't tried to move everything there. Honestly, if there was a Discord alternative that functioned similar, I would move there tomorrow, but there really isn't. And there's no easy way to mirror the content from Discord to the other place so people can see the activity.

I've been liking stoat, I only really used discord to communicate with my friends and luckily they were nice enough to humour me with making an account, so now stoats pretty much all I use, even if my friends are still using discord on the side

Here's a trick, save a comment of the gif, then you can copy the markup of the gif that's already been uploaded

I always hated how invasive double counter was. Besides being a bouncer it's also been used a stalking tool to find out peoples alt accounts and harass them.

Double Counter essentially acts as a bouncer bot for Discord servers

If you give a Discord Bot sensitive data, I'm sorry but you're clearly the issue. Bots are software, you (hopefully) wouldn't download a random piece of software from an untrusted souce and give it access to your sensitive data and you should apply the same level of caution when it comes to Discord Bots too.

You are victim blaming. Should they have been more cautions with handing over their data, yes. But the fact that they have to, is representative of the bad state of society. It is the fault of the company, people or systems that where trusted by the communities to properly protect it against evil actors. If they cannot protect that data, they shouldn't have gathered it in the first place. And for that they should get punished properly and should recompense all victims. They should no longer be in business.

Civilization is built on trust, and if that trust erodes, civilization does too.

    People still use Discord?

Did nobody learn anything from the last time this happened?

...oh well i can't get all my friends to-

Your identity just will be stolen.

Discord is too juicy a target, "cybersecurity" doesn't actually exist, one of their vendors will fuck up.

You're just fine with that, huh?

Your idiot chucklefuck 'friends' are worth that?

Unfortunately when you reach the level of ubiquity that Discord managed, it’s very difficult to convince people to get off of it. Twitter, Reddit still managing to exist is proof that the majority, the vast majority of people just cannot be bothered.

I personally know people that profess to be (and for all intents and purposes are) progressive individuals and they still use the child porn fascism app Twitter, I know people who are still glued to the opinions coming off of the data stealing AI hell-hole Reddit. The average person just can’t be bothered to make the change, they come up with any excuse under the sun to avoid it.

It’s unfortunate but it is the way it is, all you can do is continue to educate people you know, continue to point to alternatives and continue to make that alternative a desirable place to be. Almost everyone has that one vice they just can’t give up, it’s generally hypocritical to attack others for something they can’t give up when we’re all guilty of something else. All we can do is try our best.

So many reddit adjacent communities moved to discord after the Redditpocalypse that I can't say I'm surprised. I have a discord I don't actually use. It's a holdover from when I played D&D with work friends years ago.

Everything seems to have a discord. It's really popular these days.
