Pretty sure Jesus literally died to give everyone redemption or something and also said some stuff about rich people going straight into a ditch

Like I want to believe god is real and he is horrified at what American Christianity has portrayed him as: a petty, hyper-violent magical warlord who creates entities just to supernaturally threaten them with eternal torture.

I'm not saying they were good for much, but I feel like a grand inquisitor from medieval times would have good instincts when it comes to the proper response to this claim that Jesus was the ultimate usurer.

The more i read history, the more i understand that when the proto-protestant burghers complain about the evil arbitrariness and unjustness of Catholicism and the inquisition, they usual mean stuff like "i svammed some poor guy out of what little wealth he had and they said its unchristian and took my money and gave him it back even tho i didnt break a single law..."

lol, Amerikkkans are recreating Gnosticism, but adding "and that's a good thing!" after everything:

The god in the bible is actually a genocidal demiurge who will torment you for eternity if you don't submit to him...and that's a good thing!

What denomination is this not blasphemous in? ("Americhristianity," yeah yeah I know, but this goes against most important American Christian theological movements too) The unworthiness of humanity, the fact that they cannot be brought to Heaven on a basis of "personal merit" alone, including faith as a merit here, but also require divine grace (literally explicitly "unearned reward") to go to Heaven is a core idea of Christianity.

Hope, Love, and Grindset, abide in these three, but the greatest of these is Grindset. -- One Corinthian guy, I think.

It's silly for me to ask, because modern Christofascists love "God's justice" as though His justice is His overriding organizing principal, which everything else is subordinated to, like they can fucking hustle their way to Heaven and the Covenant is actually the Art of the Deal. Absolute fucking freaks who willfully reject every good thing about their religion.

i know its not a denomination but more like a current in "americhristianity" but isnt this part of what calvinism was about or tried to do?

No, exactly the opposite. A core element of Calvinism is "unconditional election," the idea that what you do fundamentally doesn't have any causal factor in the decision of going to Heaven or Hell, but in fact it was God's totally sovereign choice, his arbitrary will without constraint by any sort of other rule or principal, though I believe it was said that who was chosen could be known by God bestowing them with grace to have genuine faith and be redeemed in Christ (i.e. someone who dies a miserable heretic goes to Hell not because of their own agency but because God chose not to redeem them, which was reflected in their lack of faith in life).

It is true that culturally there would still be ideas among Calvinists that good people are economically productive (a perversion of the idea of "works" in the Bible), and it's debateable how committed the popular audience was to the true meaning of "unconditional election", but still none of them would say that work is enough, that you don't need the grace (unearned reward) of God regardless. So functionally, many people did believe in a combination of grace and works, but never in works alone beyond like an individual's idiosyncrasies that would be cursed as heretical arrogance by the rest of the community.

Some of this is definitely disconnected from a meaningful portion of Calvinist culture, but that's to be expected when one talks about the opinions of theologians.

What is he babbling about? Capitalism isn’t meritocratic at all!

Like how many times have the porks gave up the ghost that they care more about your pedigree?

porky-scared-flipped: “It’s who you know, not what you know!”

Hell, the civil rights movement has only been in effect for a fraction of capitalism’s history. What the hell is he talking about?

The whole point of the weird sacrifice ritual his dad made him do is that he gave his life. That was the point.

    trendy linguistic theory

    AKA just reading the Hebrew.

But yeah, no amount of actually reading the source material for information will ever convince Christians of anything. Wonder when they're just going to go full simulacrum and stop printing words inside the Bible, like equipping soldiers with those 40k purity seals that are just Lorem Ipsum text or maybe a CVS receipt.
