I found this image of a handbill from around the time of The Haymarket Affair, on the Chicago Historical Society website during a re-visit of the history surrounding Labor day amerikkka. It's still relevant today, and really highlights how much progress we still have to make in creating a world that's accessible, accommodating, and kind.

Here's the English version of the print:

English Text of Image [CW: Violence, Police Brutality, Historical Fedposting, Patriarchal- and male- centered language]

REVENGE! - Workingmen, to Arms!! -

Your masters sent out their bloodhounds -- the police--; they killed six of your brothers at McCormicks this afternoon. They killed the poor wretches, because they, like you, had the courage to disobey the supreme will of your bosses. They killed them, because they dared ask for the shortenin of the hours of toil. They killed them to show you, "Free American Citizens", that you must be satisfied and contended with whatever your bosses condescend to allow you, or you will get killed!

You have for years endured the most abject humiliations; you have for years suffered unmeasurable iniquities; you have worked yourself to death; you have endured the pangs of want and hunger; your Children you have sacrificed to the factory-lords -- in short: You have been miserable and obedient slave all these years: Why? To satisfy the insatiable greed, to fill the coffers of your lazy thieving master? When you ask them now to lessen your burden, he sends his bloodhounds out to shoot you, kill you!

If you are men, if you are the sons of your grand sires, who have shed their blood to free you, then you will rise in your might, Hercules, and destroy the hideous monster that seeks to destroy you. To arms we call you, to arms! Your Brothers.

Here's the German version of the print, huge shout out and thanks to @gingerbrat@hexbear.net for transcribing:

Rache! Rache! - Arbeiter, zu den Waffen! -

Revenge! Revenge! - Workers, to arms! - Working people, this afternoon the bloodhounds of your exploiters murdered 6 of your brothers out by McCormick’s. Why did they murder them? Because your brothers had the courage of being unhappy with their lot in life, which your exploiters assigned to them. They asked for bread, in reply they received lead, given the fact that this way, the people can be silenced most effectively. For many, many years you have suffered indignities without objection, you have toiled from the early mornings to the late evenings, you have suffered hardships of all kinds, you have even sacrificed your children – all of it to fill up the treasure hoards of your rulers, all of it for them! And now as you step before them, as you ask them to lighten your burden, they send their bloodhounds, the police, after you as a thanks for your sacrifices, so as to cure you of your unhappiness with lead bullets. Slaves, we ask and implore you by all that is holy and of value to you, avenge this atrocious murder, which has been committed on your brothers today, and may be committed on you tomorrow. Working people, Hercules, you have arrived at the crossroads. What will you choose? Slavery and hunger, or freedom and bread? If you choose the latter, then do not waste a moment; then, people, to arms! Annihilation upon the human beasts, who call themselves your rulers. Relentless annihilation upon them – that must be your calling! Remember the heroes whose blood fertilized the path to progress, freedom and humanity – and strive to become worthy of them!

If you're not familiar with it here's a brief history behind the events that brought about such "street literature":

The Haymarket Affair

On May 1, 1886, Chicago unionists, reformers, socialists, anarchists, and ordinary workers combined to make the city the center of the national movement for an eight-hour day.

Between April 25 and May 4, workers attended scores of meetings and paraded through the streets at least 19 times. On Saturday, May 1, 35,000 workers walked off their jobs. Tens of thousands more, both skilled and unskilled, joined them on May 3 and 4. Crowds traveled from workplace to workplace urging fellow workers to strike. Many now adopted the radical demand of eight hours’ work for ten hours’ pay. Police clashed with strikers at least a dozen times, three with shootings.

The Haymarket Affair became a symbol of the international struggle for workers’ rights. It has been associated with May Day (May 1) since that day’s designation as International Workers’ Day by the Second International in 1889. The tragedy inspired generations of labour leaders, leftist activists, and artists and has been commemorated in monuments, murals, and posters throughout the world, especially in Europe and Latin America.

As a little note on the Haymarket text and it's transcript, I have written a translation of the German text and had two major realizations:

  1. The German text is almost not patriarchal at all. It's still referring to the workers in the masculine form, and only mentions "brothers" instead of "brothers and sisters".
  2. The German text is heavily influenced by English and some sentences don't make any sense, even compared to other German texts of the time. I'd call it Denglish* 1.0

Translation, CWs applyRevenge! Revenge!

I remember when I had to learn German in school, and we got to the gendering of nouns and for a long while I was sure it had to mean something that it was die katze and der hund. Like there had to be something that marked each word beyond arbitrarily being assigned a der/die/das. Which was silly of course because my own language has so little reasoning behind gendering it's own nouns that a stereotype of immigrants is that they just learn one and then use that one for all words.

Also it can't be Denglish because then we've got Danglish, Denglish and Dunglish

There is no rules to it in general, with the notable exception of words that are clearly from other languages, which also include all words that end on -tion (nation, finalization etc.). All of these are feminine in German. My favorite little detail about this is that a lot of French words (like "le visage", "face") which are taken from French, are very often used as insults but get the feminine article. If you refer to someone's face as a visage in German, you are very much telling them that you don't like seeing them or that you generally think they're ugly.

German is not a fun language, and it always presents me with new proof that it is also such a violent and heartless language sometimes. And yes, we do have all of these glish-languages :P

You don't even understand how happy childhood me would have been if he had known there was at least one rule to cling to. Sadly it is too late. Although still interesting.

There's a fun phenomenon in Danish where because of the huge influence of Germany on the culture, but relatively little influence the other way, there are German phrases in use in Danish that are not in use in Germany. Either having fallen out of use or having been invented by German speakers outside Germany.

I don't think Germans typically say Aber Dabei or Affentittengeil or "Keine Hexerei" And while many would say Eins Bier I don't think it means the same thing

Happy to supply the rule, even if a bit late cuddle

The expressions you mentioned mostly exist in German too actually! I'll explan a bit more for the others

The term oberaffentittengeil ("extremely cool", the individual words are "ober Affen Titten geil", which very roughly translate to "top-shelf monkeys tits horny") is still in active use, same as keine Hexerei ("no witchcraft", which means the same as "It's not rocket science" in English). Eins Bier (one beer) derives from a rapper (I think?) using the number instead of the grammatically correct form Ein Bier (neutral grammatical gender with an indefinite article, definite article would be "das Bier").

Huh. I was told that they weren't. But at least we appear to be using some of them differently.

"Eins Bier" refers to when two things are the same to you so the argument is moot. Like you're discussing what to get for dinner and you don't really care. Eins bier. And it's old enough that my great grandad used it.

Aber Dabei is a hitch, problem or downside. You can use it in a way that makes no German grammatical sense. Like "And then there won't be any aber dabei"

Keine Hexerei and affentittengeil appear to be the same though.

Finally got my injection today. I feel better for now. She also prescribed an additional antipsychotic to layer on top because this gal's got treatment-resistant psychosis babyyy! She said there are some risks with layering antipsychotics, but honestly I just want to not be frozen in terror all the time, so maybe it's worth it.

I wanted to get on adhd medication. My university can only continue existing prescriptions, apparently, so I went to the psychiatrists who diagnosed me two years ago. It costs just under 1000 euros to start on medication.

Fucking brilliant. Fantastic. I've just started college, my laptop is broken, my car needs maintenance, and now I have to choose between saving to move out or getting potentially life-saving medications. Capitalism is awesome.

Ireland's public healthcare is so unbelievably underfunded that any public route will have me on a waiting list of a minimum of two years.

Started my elimination diet for real today and fucked up a little by not preparing any food last night so I didnt eat anything until I got home from work and grocery shopping

I only drank water and still got itchy, mostly on my face, then the first thing I ate was

    Cw: animal product

spoilerBroccoli with salt and beef tallow and white rice

And its been like an hour and im itchy all over so I think its mostly environmental but I have my normal dyshidrotic eczema blisters that I usually get from food again so maybe food I had earlier this week was a trigger?

Could also be my brother vaping a ton for the itchiness but probably not the blister

This is the bane of my existence and I was having a flareup before he moved back in but its been so much worse since then

Okay so the infection was not gone and its back after I had lab work yesterday and needed to wear gloves for a few hours

I did a bleach bath last night but was still scratching in my sleep. Im gonna get some disinfectant today and wipe all my stuff down and keep the baths going. You're only supposed to do like 2, 3 max a week but if wearing gloves is causing the infection to explode I dont know how to time the baths so it minimizes how much bacteria is there in the first place.

Im very annoyed at myself because when I first realized it was infected like 2 weeks ago I did a bath a day for 3 days in a row because it was so bad and then was afraid of doing more. I had 4 days off work last weekend and couldve potentially done some then and maybe gotten rid of it entirely?

Im spiraling and convinced myself that now that its colonized ill have it for the rest of my life (which would be annoying but not the end of the world if I kept up with the treatments) and just feel like shit dealing with so many flareup and health issues at the same time sadness-abysmal

The fitness rhetoric has sparked again on the left and seriously it shows that every single leftist is one bad encounter with an oppressed person away from becoming a nazi for someone. Like yea many of us can't work out, many of us can't increase our physical prowess, many of us can only move our bodies so much. I am tired, if you don't want disabled in your movement, just say so, say you don't want people who need more than 8 hours of sleep, who can't work as much or run as fast. We have been suffering long enough, just exile us so we can at least have each other, we are so separated from each other, we can't even hold each other.

Fr only for disabled and trans people as well, a NT or able-bodied person can wreck up tons of environmental toll to maintai their 'fit body' from meat eating to multiple consumption of protein shake but disabled people can't even exist privately let alone in public. I don't mean to shame anyone for eating meat or diary, it is to show the hypocrisy of people who moralize disability and health as burdens on society.

In this mega, we don't judge anyone for eating animal products, whether they be disabled or not. If someone wants to challenge their beliefs about animal products, they should seek out further reading on the topic in the vegan and food subcomms.

That being said, the judgyness of "fitness enthusiasts" is absolutely mind-boggling sometimes. I really wish that discourse would seize to be so exclusionary in general, and ableist, and transphobic in particular.

Yes that's what I meant, this is about disability not veganism, there are threads for that as well on hexbear. I just wanted to highlight the hypocrisy of "gym bros" and "brocialists" though honestly that discourse can never be not exclusionary so long as state of a body is a source of morality.

My pharmacist asked if she could give me the cheapest option for my meds, because she has to and if I say no the state won't cover them. I think this is one of those saving reforms that sounded really good and easy on paper, and I'm sure it does save a non zero amount.. Obviously it sucks for those with allergies to filler ingredients or who for other reasons can't go generic. Still. It is what it is.
But also, I feel like of the price difference is less than a cent for a month's supply it shouldn't matter.

At first the pharmacy was saying they'd order my injection on Sunday. My appointment was on Tuesday, today, day after the (US) holiday. So we contacted the pharmacy, and they ordered it on Thursday. Thought surely we'd get the injection ready before today. The day's over, and they still don't have it. Appointment rescheduled for Thursday. It's not like this is my antipsychotic that's supposed to make life bearable or anything. In truth it's been working less and less the last few months, so it's not really all that big a deal, but the relief I get for a couple days would still be nice.

I think the random itchiness, eyes stinging, and coughing I've had recently has mostly been my brothers cat hair and possibly from him vaping (im allergic to most vape juice).

We have central air and cat dander can travel through the vents and almost all of the attacks happen when im at my desk, right under the vent, or on my bed, also near the vent.

I think the infection is gone but even though I've mostly had beef, rice, and broccoli the past few days, I have more blisters again. This week im starting the elimination diet for real so ill hopefully find out if the current eczema on my arm/the blisters on my hand are from food or environmental.

Is there any reading material on how dehumanising the experience of applying for disability benefits is? The fact that you are only allowed to talk about everything you can’t do because any positive comment will get interpreted as a signal that you don’t need any support, it feels like I had to change my whole personality just to get through the process.

It is a doomed cause to appease NT folks, they won't accept you unless you can listen to music at their exact favourite volume, you are up until they are, sleep when they do, eat what they want, and behave the way they do. Even then you'll only have given 'little bit of love' even though you essentially ruined your days for them.

Yeah, I'm starting to realize this,

venting about frustrationsI never thought about it, looking back, I've always been such a pleaser to try to desperately trying to cling to a dysfunctional social life. But in the end I've always been rejected easily, now matter how hard I try. L I lost multiple years relationships because of them judging my ND behavior after learning/not respecting boundaries related to it. It's never enough. And I regret giving so much and adjusting my life to these types of people.

In the end I have one person in my life who understands and accepts me for who I am though, and I'll cherish them for that. I'm glad I have a healthy relationship now, if only finding good people wasn't such an uphill battle.

Then they also want to enter our communities so they can get away with bullying, like anxiety and depression are a problem, would someone consider fever a temporary disability? Would someone consider needing glasses a disability? No, then why are the experiences of disabled and neurodiverse constantly erased by saying 'everyone is disabled at someone in their life's 'everyone has anxiety and depression at some point in their life' no it is qualitatively different from having a brain and body different from the 'normal', you can't bully us and then claim to be one of us based on one inconvenience you have. Yes people with mild divergences and disabilities exist but they are still different from NT and able-bodied people who have some inconveniences.
