I'm currently going through the junior year of my high school, that was 20 years ago exactly. It has been 22 years since my favorite baseball team, the Boston Red Sox, had finally broken their Curse of the Bambino in 2004. The Harry Potter main book series ended 19 years ago while the film series ended 15 years ago.
Last weekend I bought a switch 2, and a father and son were in front of me. I got the pokopia bundle, they got Mario kart. The kid was telling me pokopia was really good, and asked if I ever played Mario kart. So I told him the last time I played that was on the Nintendo 64 in like 1999 when I was about his age
The kid thinks for a bit, and goes "oh wow, I didn't know you were an old lady!"
Tech. I hate new tech more and more every year. I used to love new tech it was awesome and exciting even enjoyably silly at times.
Now I hate it. Everything spies on you. Everything is used to persecute you.
Being online used to be a refuge from the shit sandwich of life, now it's become the destroyer of worlds. While there is still some good tech news, it's too often just bullshit wrapped up in surveillance packages.
Remember when tech was weird, innovative, and wacky? Doing crazy things, and not always successfully. Especially around desktop computers.
and yeah, now its all plastic slop that listens to everything you do and reports back to some big database, that gets sold to and merged with other databases to build massive profiles about you. Oh watched video about drugs in 2023? No health insurance for you in 2045 because the profile has labeled you a drug user.
I genuinely think the last tech thing I had any excitement over was the initial Ryzen release, cause the chiplet design and unbelievable amount of cores you could have were just technically interesting at the time.. and yet, somehow, despite going from 4 threads to 12 threads, things are still slower and more clunky.. and thats because no one bothers to optimize anymore and just relies on brute force CPU/GPU horsepower to get through.
technology now is not just creepware feeding the profile, its also just boring and unimpressive and stupid (like toasters that require a live service that cant make toast anymore after the company shuts down)
I remember Modest Mouse getting big and thinking at the time that it was for the generation after me. Just a few years ago I heard Float On in the grocery store. Real circle of life moment.
🫂 That's pretty typical. Getting a doctor who will give a shit about your hormonal health and emotional well-being is hard. The only suggestions I have are to keep trying different doctors, advocate loudly for yourself, and try in a less conservative area.
Online doctors can frequently be more understanding as well, and if you are capable of research and monitoring your health mostly yourself, a good option.
It seems like five minutes, not five years, since the 25th.
Next year my age has a five in it, five years after it last did. I cannot comprehend this. I'm still the teen who became obsessed with Quake. How did this happen?
I felt rather disconnected from youth/young adult fashion when those brokkoli hairdos became widespread. I wasn't ever particularly interested in fashion anyway, but those look like complete ass to me.
Also, Skyrim release was 15 years ago and they keep reminding you of their old-ass game by rereleasing it instead of a successor (I doubt it would be any good, anyway).
When people stopped seeing me. If they notice me at all, they immediately avert their gaze and look right past me. I used to get more attention than that.
Whenever someone posts "Are you this old?", and it's a picture of an original iPod, or an original Razr, or similar.
When I remember my son is the same age I was when I got married.
When I think about how many pets I've had, and they're all dead now.
When you're a five year old, one year is 20% of your entire life. When you're a 50 year old, it's 2%. As you get older, time passing does speed up, at least from your older perspective.
For me, and I know it's a bit of a meme, but the 1970s really do feel like they were only 30 years ago. It's like my brain picked 2000 as the point from which I understand and reference the passage of time. I have no doubt that when I've been alive longer in the 2000s than the 1900s I still won't feel like that's true.
Recently realized I've gained weight seemingly overnight. Used to be rather skinny. Then I started thinking when this must have started and it's been 7 years.
But just from looking at me, most people cannot guess my actual age. Part of me is starting to worry that there's a picture around here somewhere that I definitely should not look at.
I was recently thinking about the Rocky Horror Picture Show 15th anniversary box set I bought when it came out, then realized that RHPS is now just over 50 years old.
The Beloit/Mindset list that comes out every year. It takes the form of "This year's college freshman have always/never ______". For instance, they've always had GPS in their pocket. They've never used a desktop computer. $Celebrity has always been dead. It's always been a post-9/11 world.
Group of neighbirhood children lighting stuff on fire with a magnifying glass in the parking lot all panicked and tried to hide what they were doing as I walked to my car. 👴 Guess I'm too old for classic summer fun.
