Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear sharply criticized Senator Mitch McConnell and the Senate at large over the Kentucky Republican’s prolonged absence from Congress due to health issues.

Beshear, a Democrat, said on Friday that he still had little information about the condition of McConnell, who was hospitalized in mid-June and released from a rehabilitation center earlier this month.

“I’ve received absolutely nothing, and that's the same that the people of Kentucky have received,” Beshear told MS Now. “This is why the Senate feels broken. These guys don’t think that they have a boss when the people of Kentucky are their boss. They don’t feel like they are accountable whatsoever.”

Beshear called on McConnell to make a video or call into a news show to update the public about his health.

He’s the executive. Doesn’t he have law enforcement capabilities of some kind? Can he launch an investigation? These democrats are humiliatingly weak.

Yeah, his strongly worded messages will be meaningless for his presidential bid. Coward.

Maybe?

He was "sent home" but that's likely a DC residence.

If he said he was in Kentucky, then Kentucky authorities can (and should) dona wellness check.

If he said he was in DC, then Kentucky would have to request DC authorities do it.

These democrats are humiliatingly weak.

A Governor only has authority in their state....

[-] soratoyuki@piefed.zip 17 points 3 days ago

Can the Democratic mayor of DC do a wellness check?

[-] givesomefucks@lemmy.world 13 points 3 days ago

Yep, I already said Kentucky can request it, but DC could do it unprompted and justify it due to him being a Senator.

Normally authorities would go years before getting pro-active. It's only after a family member or employer reports they stopped hearing from them.

Republicans have the Senate, his family is in on it...

So the only avenue is Kentucky asking about their representative really.

In true mcturtle fashion, it's exploiting a lot of grey areas and norms.

Can the Governor of Texas unilaterally declare Jasmine Crockett as dead and appoint someone else to hold her seat?

There would be all kinds of abuses if Governors could do as you suggest.

Is Jasmine Crocket actually dead? Because Mitch is actually dead.

[-] SpaceCowboy@lemmy.ca -1 points 1 day ago

It's irrelevant if she's actually dead. If the Governor of Texas declares her dead, he can replace her. Because apparently governors can now unilaterally declare people dead.

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Declaring the seat vacant due to someone being dead isn’t the same as declaring someone dead. Literally anyone in that situation has the ability to resolve everything by showing up and saying “I am inarguably alive.” Is asking someone in a position of power and governance to have some demonstrable level of not being dead when they are obviously fucking dead just too much for democratic decorum to handle?

[-] titanicx@lemmy.zip 1 points 1 day ago

You're an idiot that's not how it works. If somebody isn't seen in public isn't talked to and can't appear in public then they can then be declared dead.

Sharply criticized

Well that’ll teach them.

But how can he work from home, if congress forced a new mother to fly from Colorado to DC just to vote because no more congressional remote work? Flip-flopping scam weasels.

Also, the already dead part.

Lol at this thread ripping on Andy Beshear for not "doing something!" while totally excluding the actual fucking culprit AND his enablers from the entire conversation.

Also lol at all the people who, when directly asked, "What do you think the governor of Kentucky can do that he isn't already doing?" either fall silent, or instantly refer to the extensive law libraries they keep in their prison wallets to extract answers not found in reality.

So many people trying so, so hard to indict the only official actually doing what they can within the law -- while giving the actual miscreant a complete pass. Stop missing stair around this dead or dying motherfucker already, jesus. Do you think he's going to come get you like the ghoul he is?

Or to put it another way, Mitch McConnell, who is the actual individual deserving of your ire (remember this point) is physically in DC. DC is where he collapsed and was hospitalized, and just a couple days ago there was a video of a DC power broker coming out of McConnell's DC townhouse. It is safe to say that DC is where Mitch McConnell -- or at least his mortal coil -- is physically located right now.

Now let's look at the law. Gov. Beshear is not the mayor of DC. As the governor of a state, Gov. Beshear has no federal authority to do anything at all. Gov. Beshear has authority in the state of Kentucky, and only in the state of Kentucky.

Meanwhile, DC is not in Kentucky, which is very probably why McConnell is staying in DC.

To recap: at any point since mid-June, McConnell himself could have put a stop to this circus in a single heartbeat -- but instead of going after him, you're all focusing your anger on the governor of the state of Kentucky who is left as powerless by McConnell to go after him as you are, yet who is still doing everything he can legally do.

Or to put it another way, Gov. Beshear has NOT forgotten who the actual fucking culprit of this scenario is, which is far more than can be said for so many in this thread, lol.

Quite literally all that needed to happen was to call a dead man’s bluff. Say his seat is vacant due to inability to perform necessary duties of the seat. If he’s not dead/incapable of doing the job then that’s a pretty easy thing to prove. The bar was on the floor, and that was still too high for them to hurdle. You’re jumping through logical hoops to pretend any of this was unavoidable.

[-] ChunkMcHorkle@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

That is not an argument or valid point against what I pointed out. Outline the issue, don’t just get mad that not everyone is a lawyer.

Also, are you a lawyer?

[-] NotASharkInAManSuit@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

Cute, I get it.

Other than calling me an asshole, because apparently tactical logistics make you angry, got anything to say in response?

If only there was SOMETHING he Could do! OH WELL!

[-] neidu3@sh.itjust.works 16 points 3 days ago

He's tried nothing and is all out of ideas.

[-] MountingSuspicion@reddthat.com 9 points 3 days ago

I totally understand the frustration, but my understanding is that there is really nothing he can legally do about it. What exactly do you think he should be doing that he isn't? If there is something that he's legitimately not doing I'd like to know about it.

Kentucky's governor is basically Chuck Schumer, all bluster. What a disappointment.

[-] rozodru@piefed.world 8 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

At this point it's going to HAVE to be a closed casket and/or private funeral unless they pumped that body with the most chemicals known to man and put him in a freezer in the arctic.

Also whomever the mortician or whatever is they're probably rolling in the dough right now. probably the best thing that happened in their career.

[-] GladiusB@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

He's being kept on life support. He's gone cognitively. But not yet physically.

[-] Jankatarch@lemmy.world 4 points 2 days ago

Poor wikipedia editors have been waiting on his page for so long they begun unionizing.
