These AI companies are like the lore of Lethal Company; war profiteering until everything is total destruction; building stronger, better weapons until everything is dead

[-] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

For those of us that kind of like remaining alive in relatively civil society, the whole thing is kind of alarming.

The point of sanctions is not to deny a country access to products. That would be impossible. The idea is that acquiring sanctioned goods is full of friction and expense.

Smugglers don't offer 2day shipping or easy returns. It's also ironically a good thing to see Western tech in Russian weapons because it implies that they can't produce the tech themselves or buy it off China.

Well except china actually manufactures those chips.

Edit: Tbf maybe china is just assembling the cards and not manufacturing the chips directly. But still they have them.

[-] AnarchoEngineer@lemmy.dbzer0.com 16 points 2 days ago

Iirc it’s Taiwan that makes NVIDIA chips, not china

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 9 points 2 days ago

When they leave the foundry in Taiwan, they aren't ready to be just used. I'm not sure if TSMC even cuts the dies out of the wafers, then they need to be packaged and binned (not necessarily in that order... Being packaged makes binning easier but it's a waste to package a junk chip). Packaging might happen in Malaysia, Singapore, or China (or elsewhere, I just know those countries have packaging facilities).

Packaging is when they put the chip(s) on the little PCB that has the pins or pads (for CPUs), though GPUs generally go on a board of some sort, though I can only guess how this one was packaged. Imagining Jensen Huang on an assembly line, licking the backs of GPUs and sticking them on missiles as they pass by and causually get dumped in a steel bin at the end of the conveyor, but that's probably not what's happening with them.

Good points. That helps put it in perspective.

Brb. Invading Russia for an upgrade.

[-] wowwoweowza@lemmy.world 4 points 1 day ago

Bernie seeks to impede more AI development… some development could lead to use in warfare… Russia already using AI in warfare

[-] Smaile@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 days ago

Is it really worth It to load these things in to missles?

[-] EastofEdson@piefed.ca 6 points 2 days ago

They are already sold for data centers that will never be built. Might as well fire them at the enemy.

[-] Zwiebel@feddit.org 3 points 2 days ago

Is that a serious question?

[-] Smaile@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 day ago* (last edited 1 day ago)

yes, there are surely cheaper options considering theyre going for swarm tactics. unless this is one of their larger missles.

3 times I pressed my finger on the image in order upvote......

Maybe I am very dumb

Not dumb, just human, and prone to forming habits.

[-] riskable@programming.dev -3 points 2 days ago

Yet another comment that says they solved the problem without saying how.

[-] Johanno@feddit.org 6 points 2 days ago

I am using the app voyager.

The same app as OP who posted a screenshot of 2 posts.

Because I am dumb I tried to press the button in the image.

The solution is to not do that.

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

I used to have difficulty getting through doors. Turns out they are designed to prevent you from going through when closed and luckily I was able to solve the problem from there and mostly get through doors when I want to now.
