Oh come on, you can do better than that. We all increase in entropy.

[-] remon@ani.social 3 points 1 week ago

It's the only thing that matters in the end!

[-] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 7 points 1 week ago

Hopefully I'll be able to pass my little farm to someone willing to keep my vision for it going. Idk if I'll have kids but that would be a pretty good avenue if they want. If not maybe sell it to someone I trust when it becomes too much for me. Secondary to that, if I get to be a nuclear engineer in my state that would be pretty sick.

[-] Krusty@quokk.au 5 points 1 week ago

What a juxtaposition. A childless farmer yearning for nuclear ambitions.

[-] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Farming is the side gig, mechanical engineering is my actual job. Work a cogen plant now.

[-] Krusty@quokk.au 4 points 1 week ago

Farming is life. Having a homestead is living the dream, IMO.

Did you catch my double entendre? Nuclear engineer and nuclear family. Good luck with both.

[-] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Yes and I loved it. Thanks!

[-] livligkinkajou@slrpnk.net 1 points 1 week ago

Don't leave us hanging, tell us more about your vision for the place, if you don't mind. Is it a work in progress? What's next on your to do list for it?

[-] Return_of_Chippy@lemmy.world 2 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

As it stands now, I donate/give away about 20-30% of what I produce, sell 30% and keep the rest. That's why it's something I do on the side, not my main income. Food stuff ends up at a pantry I like or with friends/family. Most of the wool goes to a lady from my church who makes stuff. I'd kind of like to learn more about doing the latter myself. Realistically though, I don't really want to dedicate the time or bandwidth to it lol. I'd like to expand my current pickeling/canning setup and expand the space I use for vegetables. It's a balance though. I want to keep it relatively small so because I don't want to be a full time farmer. I'd like to get better at keeping bees and keep more, it's hard to get them through winters. I could keep going on the little things I want to do for days. As well as the things I don't because I know they'd get away from me. I definitely don't want to end up putting my lady in a situation where she has to help out more just because I had an idea I couldn't keep up with. But anyway, at it's core, my vision for it is simple. Create high quality, clean food/products and always give away enough to make an impact. Apologies for the rambling I've been up for like 30 hours at this point.

(This feels in a way very private.) For now, I’ve talked to people in psychological emergencies, offline+online. They were strangers and I don’t know how they fared after we talked, but in these moments i was there, at least making them not feel alone with their struggles and (hopefully) at most setting a spark of hope that could be the beginning of change (when I explained what helped me / sharing my related stories) and taking responsibility in their own lives.

I visited a neighbour who had a stroke and could barely move after, in a hospital. I went to them for over a month (almost) every day. I organised small things that were important to them in these times, even if they had no impact on their status. I talked to them, made them feel human, showing support for them and their progress. When saying goodbye for the day they broke out multiple times in tears for I was doing this, saying they loved me. (They had nobody else, I barely knew them before the stroke)

[I quit smoking after >10 years, in the third or fourth week of visiting them because I whittnessed (?) the system “hospital” keeping humans barely alive and my neighbour reporting how they got treated by staff and the doctors - 100% dependence (eat, sleep, the table is too far away to reach water(intentionally?), toilet, turning in bed, hygiene, the tv doesn’t work, EVERYTHING) on staff that DGAF, because evolution gave humans a mechanism to cope with being exposed to so much suffering: dampening empathy, inhibiting emotional involvement, coldness on a professional level. (They have to have professional distance, yes.) I’m not blaming or judging, these were my reasons to quit smoking when I couldn’t stop before, on my own.]

[If you want to stop doing a vice (smoking, alc?) or want to get a new perspective and you get a chance to go to a hospital to visit someone, do it. Expose yourself to the humane suffering which otherwise doesn’t really exist in your world. Seeing it makes a difference.]

Helping my neighbour for their time in this hospital was an eye-opening experience for me. Time and health is all we have. I have been very wasteful with my time.

If you are not where you want to be, changing something might be enough to break out of current patterns, even if the change is not better, setting yourself up for positive change when the opportunity arises. Neutral change might be a good first goal.

I confronted people in public when they littered or showed aggression towards weaker people.

A lot of this is associated with “civil courage”, I feel.

Thank you for this. I read all of it, and I think you are a good human.

[-] sit@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 1 week ago

Thank you, but I’m also only a human with flaws.

LOL Legacy.

I won’t have a legacy, I am not that remarkable.

I'm always cracking jokes and like to make people laugh. So, that.
Still net negative, tho

I'm a doctor. And I know people rightfully don't trust us and I know that people are justifiably angry at the US healthcare system.

But every time I'm with a patient, I sit down for as long as is necessary. I will run late if I have to because I know that I might be the only opportunity this person has to have someone listen to them( because God knows so many of my colleagues will not). I ask about their lives and I try to explain what I understand about their condition. I explain what the limits of modern medicine is and I try to point out where exactly the insurance company has chosen to insert themselves into the interaction. I never promise that I can fix everything but I try my hardest to listen to their concerns. I strongly believe in health education and I try to explain that medicine has limits about what it can find and what it can explain. Sometimes their problems fall into realm sometimes their problems do not fall into that realm. I know patients will sometimes lie to manipulate me, but I don't hold that against the next patient.

I volunteer at 2 free clinics because I strongly believe we need a universal healthcare system and I think it would make me a hypocrite if I didn't at least try to donate some of my time.

I'm not the best doctor but I know I'm motivated by a deep sense of responsibility to humanity.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

how can you do this? I was under the impression that insurers had a clock you had to keep to.

[-] thethrilloftime69@feddit.online 1 points 1 week ago

No. Each doctor/practice has their own policies about how many patients need to be seen in order to optimize revenue. Insurers have policies about what needs to be documented before they'll agree to pay for certain tests or agree to pay for additional visits.

We're trained in residency to try to fit a whole visit into 15 mins. So a lot of systems will force you to see 4-8 patients in an hour. I'm lucky that I work for a small non profit hospital, so we don't have any policies about how many patients need to be seen in order to optimize revenue, but a lot of my colleagues will be forced into seeing 40-60 patients in a day in order to maximize the number of billable visits.

Basically MBAs forced all these decisions on us.

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

Im a bit jelly of your patients. One of my best doctors whas this deaf woman and Im like 99% sure its because she could say shove it I have a disablity and need to read lips so it takes as long as it takes.

[-] thethrilloftime69@feddit.online 1 points 1 week ago

Yeah I'm super lucky I don't work for MBAs all my bosses are doctors and they don't like to step on my toes. So I have a lot of leeway to do things like I see fit.

[-] Kennystillalive@feddit.org 3 points 1 week ago

That one internet argument I last had! That did made this world a little better☠️

To be honest, I'm not the type of person with a big ego, that thinks they had or will have a huge impact on the world, but I occassionally partake in political marches against faschism, imperialism, animals rights etc.

[-] djmikeale@feddit.dk 3 points 1 week ago

When I worked as an analyst, I wrote a report about exoskeletons that were available to factory workers which allowed them to lift stuff in a better and easier way to not hurt their backs as much - back pain is apparently is a huge issue for lots of factory workers.

I don't know what happened after delivering the report, but I would like to think that my report showed the value of the product to upper management and that they implemented some of my recommendations for increasing adoption and usage.

On a more personal note, some drunk guy was harassing a girl on a train once, and I managed to distract the guy and get him to talk to me instead until the girl got off the train, where she said thank you and smiled to me just before leaving.

[-] Crackhappy@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

You put a smile on my face, both for your hopeful contributions to a workplace as well as what you did to help a woman out.

[-] Rhynoplaz@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Probably my kids. So far, they seem to be a lot better at all of this than I ever was.

I saved a lot of people on the day I decided to not be a surgeon.

[-] MalReynolds@slrpnk.net 2 points 1 week ago

Tossup between teaching geneticists not to use dumb statistics and a couple of minor kernel contributions along the way. Back after the first human genome everything was showing significant correlations to brain proteins, which are notably longer than somatic ones, because they were failing to normalize against length. Made a web app that did it for them, now it's part of the standard analysis packages. Not sure how long that would have kept going without my publication, but I got us there faster, so science progressed faster.

My comments on Reddit and Lemmy? 🤷‍♂️

Same. Surely, some future historian or philosopher will read our shitposts and usher in a new age of humanity.

Fuss and misery.

I hope the ashes of my body will make for good nutrients for the landfill they will eventually be dumped in lol

[-] raldone01@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Probably my minor OSS contributions. Some good memories in friends and family - I would like to think.

[-] TammyTobacco@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 week ago

Planted some nice shade trees that should be shading the area long after I'm dead.

[-] Mantzy81@aussie.zone 1 points 1 week ago

Whilst I'll try to protect the environment and increase the protections and the communities in my State, all I really really care about is whether my kids will remember me fondly and know that I loved them.

[-] Goldholz@lemmy.blahaj.zone 1 points 1 week ago

So faar? I braught a lot of people together. Helped many threw a very dark time and inspired some. What i want my legacy to be, oof that is heavily tied to my enormose ambition that i want to but how things are going i dont know if that path is the path europe is on right now for me to even being able to move into that position. But who knows...

[-] naught101@lemmy.world 1 points 1 week ago

Climate activism. Helped get the issue of coal mining and export on the local, state, and federal agenda in Australia in the late 2000s, while living next to the world's biggest coal export port. Still doing bits, but I think that was my most effective period (working with many others, obviously).

[-] HubertManne@piefed.social 1 points 1 week ago

There are several times in my life where I have worked against my own interest. This would be for things people think of as morality but in my own thought patterns Im not sure if that exactly fits. I think it had a big impact on many folks involved. Mostly they are just surprised someone would actually do that and I think, or maybe its more hope, that it caused some introspection.

My kids growing up and having more in this world than I ever did

[-] Zarobi@aussie.zone 0 points 1 week ago

I made a medical software. It's not the only one in the niche, but I still think I made a difference.

I really focused on quality. No bugs allowed to exist for more than a week. Must be fast, efficient, convenient, pretty to look at, reliable, secure, private, anything and everything for the end user. I worked fucking hard for years. We were the premium product. Every feature made medical professional's lives a tiny bit easier. I never said "that's impossible", I would rewrite half the application over two weeks if needed. Over time, it grew bigger and bigger; it's a huge product now with thousands of features.

I like to think that I've indirectly helped people, by helping the people that help people. If that makes sense. It's one of two things in my life I'm proud of.

Once, the office got sent a gift basket of chocolate and flowers from a happy customer. You don't forget that.
