This is dumb. Shell isn't just sitting on their stuff. They're selling it - selling it to people who buy and use it. This is like saying OJ wasn't responsible for what happened, it was the knife manufacturer (but not the distributor or the retailer the ad firm etc)

Okay, who set up modern society to require use of these products? Was it the average citizen? Or was it petrol manufacturers, car companies, corrupt governments?

The average citizen doesn't have much of a choice about how society is run, and their ability to change things for the better is next to nothing. In contrast, there are people with vested interest in building the world in their image. In no uncertain terms, this is their fault.
