After this world cup, Argentina is being seen as a unique evil, and it's getting more racist and xenophobic. People don't know a single thing about Argentina but Argentinians are all being painted as racist and zionists, and some Argentinian players being violent is apparently the fault of the entire team or even the whole of Argentina. Argentinians are described as uniquely violent. This was not the response after Zidane's headbutt, or Nigel de Jong's karate kick in 2010. Some people are even calling for banning Argentina from the next football world cup. If I was Argentinian I would not feel safe in Europe. I saw a video of Argentinian fans getting beat up by Spain supporters in Spain after the final. Europeans and North Americans are just projecting their own racism onto Argentina and are using that to excuse being racist to Argentinians.

So if you meet an Argentinian, be extra nice to them. And if you're Argentinian: Te apoyamos

On the day of the final, I saw a group of Argentinians having an Asado in a local park, and when I left the park I saw another Argentinian wearing their jersey, probably going to the Asado, and I told him 'Vamos Argentina'. To which he replied 'Gracias'. It sounded like he was not used to hear this support.

Edit: But I don't deny the racism in Argentina at all. My problem is that Argentina's racism is being used as an excuse by North Americans and Europeans to project their own racism problems onto Argentina and to bet racist against them, also impacting the Argentinians that aren't racist

Yeah yeah I agree Argentina deserves critical support because of its Global South status and material reality. But I would also like to gently push back, because their reputation for racism definitely has some truth to it

In my experience interacting with other Latin Americans online, Argentines have been the most consistent in using the n word (they told me that is just how they talk over there). I have also seen them drop comments like "improve the race" or call Brazilians "monkeys"

I haven't really encountered any other nationality that uses these kinds of comments so casually. I even met a psychologist once who went as far as asking what my skin color was and she was super judgmental during our brief encounter. Plus, a trans girl I know from there told me that you do not choose the skin color you are attracted to

So yeah, even if they argue that is just how they are and they do not really mean it, when you combine those experiences with their country's history of whitening and their past (and current) policies encouraging European immigration, it really paints a different picture than what they claim

So based on my experience, I would say Argentine people are nice and make good friends, but don't let your guard down because you have to know that side of them exists

As a Brazilian that plays videogame on some LATAM servers, I can say that I can only be so courteous after being called a monkey constantly by my Argentinian teammates.

Some friends reminded me of when Luis Suárez and Messi called Neymar "Conguitos" when playing for Barcelona. So, even at the high level, some of this shit happens.

I said it before in the Iran War thread, but I'll briefly say it again. The real enemy here is the US and the capitlist control over FIFA, who are auding the US in their propaganda effort. The image of Argentines currently being cultivated is a conscious construction by fascist elements of Argentina and US imperialists. They want to separate Argentine identity from its actual material reality of being a Global South country, and obfuscate it as a part of the white imperialist world.

With that being said, I think it's a bit of a stretch to imply that Argentina isn't racist. It's a settler colony along with the rest of the Western hemisphere, just because the population are not as violently extremist as the US Settler colonialist doctrine doesn't remove that fact. In reality, the fascist elements of Argentina absolutely adore the racism of the US, and much of the white liberal elite in Argentina have less successfully attempted to implement those same policies in Argentina.

I don't quite understand why some Argentines try to point to US bigotry as a proof that they're being singled out for racism. The ruling bigots of the US are directly responsible for fermenting racism in Argentina by supporting the most disgusting of comprodors like Milei. They aren't separate at all, but closely linked.

Even historically, the settler colonial elite of Argentina based their racial theories on the model of the US founding fathers.

The racism of Argentina is sustained by the whims of the US, and I think it's fair to say that as long as Argentina is under the thumb of the US and isn't able to remove their influence, then Argentine racism will continue to grow and become more vitriolic.

A lucid and cogent argument. How can we stand together as a barrier to class politics when we continue to engage in identity politics?

This isn't to say racism isn't important, because it is, and we can and should address it among ourselves and root it out of our midst. It is too say we should recognize it as a favorite wedge used by those who would break our unity.

[-] KrupskayaPraxis@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 4 days ago

Thank you for this comment. I should've mentioned the racist history and present because I can understand why people thought I was brushing over it, even if that wasn't my intention. And I agree that it's a settler colony with racism being normalized through their upper class and by the USA. Argentina needs a revolution after which they will try to learn to deal with their past and combat settler supremacy.

[-] salim@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 4 days ago

You did NOT say it briefly lmao

[-] Malkhodr@lemmygrad.ml 11 points 4 days ago

Lol, apologies, I can't help but finish a thought once I start.

[-] amemorablename@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 days ago

Lol I get it, I've had times I wrote "TL;DR:" to summarize for people at the end of an already long post and then somehow wrote like two more paragraphs and then I'm sitting there going, well shit.

It's almost as if Soccer/Football fans from ANY country are made up largely of it's most reactionary slice of society, young, arrogant and often ignorant men.

You cannot point to any country's football fanbase and claim there aren't any boneheaded xenophobes, bigots and racists, but due to some astronomic global cracker projection effort, we've somehow come to the conclusion that it's Argentina's football culture (or even it's entire country! The country that abolished black slavery and segregations decades or even centuries before most "civilized" Europeans) that is totally the epitome of racism in the modern world. The lack of awareness and boneheaded confidence that so many westerners, of all races, have decided to believe in, has to be the biggest case of algorithmic boosted cultural slander I have seen.

[-] burlemarx@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 3 days ago

Let's not generalize the soccer fan base. I would say each fanbase have their own dynamics, some are more progressive than others, some have some complicated nuanced racist traits (they call the adversary team black players as monkeys, but praise and adore their own black idols). Some are staunch reactionaries while other are progressive in an unbelievable way.

In Brazil, for example, we have the Corinthian fan-base which was the home of Socrates, one of the most based and politicized Brazilian soccer players (and a genius with the ball), who promoted the "Corinthian democracy", a kind of participatory democracy for the fan base, almost managing the club like it was a worker council. While the Corinthian fan base has participated in many violent acts against other fanbases, they have often been seen in protests being the hardliners against cops and protecting the protestors.

Same with teams in reactionary states, like Paraná. The Coritiba fanbase beat the shit out of the Bolsonaristas that were blocking the road prior to the failed Bolsonaro coup on January 8th. Although many of the Coritba fans were Bolsonaro supporters, their fanaticism to the Coritiba came first, way above their love for Bolsonaro, and the result was in beating the shit out of them and making them undo the roadblocks so they wouldn't lose a game.

In Argentina, I think the Estudiantes fanbase is the most progressive, while in some places like Ireland, the Celtic fanbase were pretty much based.

Never ask Argentinians (including BE) what happened to their large black population. 🤫

[-] KrupskayaPraxis@lemmygrad.ml 17 points 4 days ago

Yeah, they all say that they intermixed, but completely ignore blanqueamiento, where intermixing was favoured by the government because it produced whiter offspring

[-] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 days ago

Blanqueamiento is not unique to Argentina though, literally every country in South America and a good chunk of Central America did it. Neither is anti-blackness or settler colonialism. Argentina should not be singled out to get all the heat.

[-] ArcticFoxSmiles@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

That is understanding because here in the United States, Americans seem to treat lighter skinned Blacks, Hispanics, and Asians, better than the darker skinned ones, maybe that is why.

[-] Saymaz@lemmygrad.ml 37 points 4 days ago
[-] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 12 points 4 days ago

Yeah instead of finger wagging at the other, westerners finally got a new figure to be racist towards while putting themselves on the high horse.

[-] opiumfree@lemmygrad.ml 24 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

idk im black so im just gonna use my basic survival skills here. even in this community i had an encounter with someone defending argentina and someone who i think was an argentinian and i had to use that block button because i was uncomfortable which im not quick to do.

your last line says there ”if you meet an argentinian be extra nice to them” but if some of us meet an argentinian we would probably just be called a hard r, please be honest. my first encounter with argentinians was discourse about a semi offensive term to japanese latin americans and this person then went on to say that brazil is way too harsh with their anti racism laws and many latin americans have warned us about argentina.

”if i was argentinian i would not feel safe in europe” because you know your grandpa is still wanted or what? be real, nobody of argentinian descent would be oppressed in europe if they are white in appearance.

also: youre all so quick to say ”north americans are saying argentina is racist” but dont have the guts to say you mean n words are saying that. its just black americans pointing it out and warning each other, be honest. there is no large anti argentina scheme, its minorities warning each other against racism.

i would hate to continue this with passive aggressive anti-black people in the community so please just do your nazbol debut and say what you feel about minorities if thats the case. if not, then just stop making an issue where its not.

[-] salim@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 4 days ago

Sorry if what i said was expressing anti blackness it wasn't my goal and it doesn't represent what I stand for, I'm totally ignorant about a minority that is totally foreign to me tho i try to learn about the struggle, i know it can never be enough, but you refuse to engage with the points I made, I really wish I can express myself more clearly that doesn't read anti blackness for you, I didn't come to this space to fight or argue so again I'm sorry

[-] commiewolf@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 4 days ago

I think you may possibly be referring to me in this comment, and if so, I do not see at all how I said anything to come across as offensive to black people, if somehow it did come off that way I apologize and assure you that was not the intention, but surely you can see how you are refusing to look at the matter from an objective view? No country's problems exist in a total vacuum, and we cannot ignore the entire global context to condemn it based on the actions of proportionately very few people. That sort of generalization is not only un-marxist, it's verging on racist in itself.

because you know your grandpa is still wanted or what

Again, this sort of statement shows you have some widely propogated and quite frankly incorrect perceptions of Argentina that are not at all fair to use as a metric to condemn an entire country. Argentina did not invite Nazis to go and live there and work in their government and military, but a lot of western countries explicitly did this, but do not suffer the same amount of offhanded stereotyping.

[-] KrupskayaPraxis@lemmygrad.ml 9 points 4 days ago

I understand your point fully. When talking about self preservation, I understand not wanting to give them the benefit of the doubt

[-] ghost_of_faso3@lemmygrad.ml 35 points 4 days ago

England fans complaining about how racist Argentina fans are

[-] bennieandthez@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 4 days ago

I am convinced it's a psyop to isolate Argentina so people cheer when they get butchered by USrael.

[-] KrupskayaPraxis@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 3 days ago

I think so too, and to make Argentinians more pro-Israel by making the rest of the world hate them

[-] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 4 days ago

Agreed. Divide and conquer.

[-] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 days ago

That's not outside the realm of possibility.

[-] ICastFist@programming.dev 29 points 4 days ago

As a Brazilian, I can tell you that the perception of Argentinians as snobs and racists is very old. It may have exacerbated during the world cup, but during several Libertadores da América games, there were many Argentinians fans calling Brazilian players monkey.

[-] KrupskayaPraxis@lemmygrad.ml 6 points 4 days ago

I know, and I should've clarified that Argentina does have a racism problem. My problem is that the hate campaign goes too far and treats all Argentinians as the same

[-] pinguinu@lemmygrad.ml 14 points 4 days ago

I feel like the core of the problem is just ultras all around. When Spain wins any football trophy, it's right-wingers going out to the town square to say "Pedro Sánchez motherfucker" or whatever fascist chant they come up with (this is VERY common to see), and sometimes they even show the Francoist flag and all. In club leagues in many countries, some team's (right-wing) ultras go out breaking shit and fighting the other team's hooligans when they lose. This is true domestically in Argentina and Spain (among many other countries ofc).

Sadly it's no surprise that a world cup final gets so heated when a significant subset of the fanbase are reactionaries (and nationalist marketing is everywhere). When I saw the semifinals' teams I knew it was gonna be bad. My only hope (politically) before that had been Egypt and they were fucked over. But most disappointing is the fact that there was no big show of spite for FIFA, much less any sign of a boycott, even when Trump straight up had the US' red card removed.

To be clear, there are left-wing ultras and as far as I know they tend to show sportsmanship and unity between fanbases in matches instead beating the shit out of each other (shocking revelation /s).

[-] ghost_of_faso3@lemmygrad.ml 15 points 4 days ago* (last edited 4 days ago)

I thought left wing ultras where cool till one of them called me a race traitor, now I just hate them all equally.

My main critique of left wing football ultras tends to be that they could direct the energy they put into football into literally anything else and it would be more productive, instead they direct it into setting fire to bins and shitting on the street when there team loses. They tend to only be leftist in opposition to the other side, in a sectarian way where if you try to talk about leftism they wont know anything and if you try to get them on side they will fall back to liberal biases. Its the kind of person who flies a Palestine flag, not because they support Palestine, but because they think it pisses off the other side.

[-] PolandIsAStateOfMind@lemmygrad.ml 13 points 4 days ago

We don't have this problem in Poland, football ultras are all rightwing with most of them being either neonazi or polofash. And this is after improvement of situation in last two decades.

[-] Collatz_problem@hexbear.net 4 points 3 days ago

I've yet to see any left-wing ultras, especially in Eastern Europe.

[-] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 4 days ago

I mean, progress is progress, I guess? It seems my issue is impatience as I see how much conditions degrade and personally affect me, but staying grounded and recognizing conditions are going to have to affect many more than me, before they can begin to improve.

I remember being dumbfounded when a financially comfortable friend looked me in the eye and said (decades ago) that the poor would feel the crunch of a collapse the least because we had much less to lose and wanting to knock the stuffing out of him. But I kind of feel compassion for him, because while he was super smart, he reminds me of how ignorant we can be, in all our glory.

[-] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 5 points 4 days ago

now I just hate them all equally.

It seems like a scorched earth policy. Some just don't even know any different or better. I'm also learning that some grounds aren't conducive to planting a seed, so that soil needs conditioning, or recognizing when our resources would be better spent elsewhere.

I still get flustered and even angry, but I'm having a deep compassion awakened, as I realize that while I'm certainly not where I want to be, I've made phenomenal progress, given my circumstances, in just a few years. I hardly recognize myself, sometimes. And progress isn't linear, either.

[-] ghost_of_faso3@lemmygrad.ml 8 points 4 days ago

I understand the nuance, its just that 90% of ultras just end up being thugs drawn to some form of perceived sectarian power trip against an enemy of other working class men typically. The hate mostly just stems from how they like to fight each other all the time here and the states of the streets afterwards.

[-] Maeve@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 4 days ago

Maybe. It's not like I encounter any sort of leftist in 3D, and I'm still learning to suss out all differences and flavors.

[-] demeritum@lemmygrad.ml 7 points 4 days ago

One of my friends was a left wing ultra - an anarchist one - and by god, he had the worst takes imaginable, like saying we should laugh at male rape victims or the usual evul chynah stuff. Anecdotally I know but still…

[-] big_spoon@lemmygrad.ml 4 points 4 days ago

yeah, maybe they were kinda giles (heel-ess for the gringos) in 2023 elections, milei is a pelotudo sionista, and they were making a quilombo with the racist remarks of the selection, but argentina is cool and gauchos are most lovely and don't deserve a collective punishment because i love them, i swear it by dieguito maradona!
