They did this the day after it was announced they're spending 3 billion dollars to fully acquire the Toronto Maple Leafs. I bet if they cut their top executives pay a bit, they could have kept people employed and those stations on air.

This. 3B produces way more than enough money a year to pay these 230 people $100,000 a year perpetually. But billionaire vanity is more important. The Leafs don’t need Rogers.

If the market is so lucrative I'm sure someone else will jump in to fill the void.

It's my fault. I always say no when they constantly come to my door trying to sell me stuff.

[-] TheFeatureCreature@lemmy.ca 10 points 4 days ago

Goddammit. There goes even more of our medium-wave stations.

Operating a radio station is a business. If it doesn't make money why do it?

[-] CeeBee_Eh@lemmy.world 2 points 2 days ago

Not everything needs to be business-ified.

[-] CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

It is a business. What would you have them do?

They are a major corporation, and a telecommunications company at that. Their bottom line isn't exactly shrinking. Many companies operate industry related public arms at a loss as a promotional department. Them simply operating a radio station is massive marketing, and if done right, can earn a lot of public goodwill.

Edit: bad wording

Rogers is a huge company. Those scenarios would have been considered, and rejected. Simple reason is not enough demand for the product. Same reason we don't have the McRib.

Interwebs search says they were getting about 2,000 listeners per show. So truly not many cared.

Like cable TV the writing is on the wall for terrestrial radio that plays music. Eventually the only thing left will be news and talk radio and even that will decline.

[-] ValueSubtracted@startrek.website 12 points 3 days ago

The stations being shut down are all either news or sports.

A podcast has nothing to do with news radio which updates you all day at the top of the hour. Podcasts are not frequent and aren’t accessible to everyone while driving

The stations that were shut down included both sports and news stations.

[-] CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca -1 points 3 days ago

Regardless, they weren't making money. Rogers doesn't get $1B+ of government money like the CBC does to air programming no one listens to.

[-] GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca 2 points 2 days ago

Many people myself included listen to the CBC and enjoy it. Take this Tiny PP “my taxpayer money” energy elsewhere.

[-] CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca -1 points 2 days ago

I'm glad to see you enjoy it. Numbers say CBC numbers are declining, and keep declining.

Look at it this way. Would you rather have a taxpayer funded CBC or free high speed internet and mobile phone? That's how much we are all paying.

[-] GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago

I would absolutely prefer the CBC. I support nationalized institutions that serve the common good and would like to see more funding for them and the nationalization of other services. Free and fair media not beholden to corporate or religious influence is as or more important than free internet - and why not both?

There is no taxpayer money. That’s an American trope. We elect a government who is accountable to society as a whole not the individual disgruntled taxpayer who would rather have more money for a down payment on trashy lifted Dodge RAM.

Sorry you get a Corolla and we all get the CBC.

[-] CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago

I support people making their own choice. That's a good thing.

I don't understand 'there is no taxpayer money'. Do you not understand where the CBC government handout comes from? You know it comes from taxpayers, right?

[-] GrackleBirb@lemmy.ca 1 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

The government is not accountable to the individual taxpayer it is accountable to society as a whole. You as an individual taxpayer have no say about how the money is spent other than exercising your right to vote. Your tax contributions are not yours to manage. That money belongs to the government who is far more capable of managing that than an armchair disgruntled libertarian accountant who wants more disposable income for himself. It’s not about you or me but it’s about we.

We live in a society.

Canada has voted to maintain and invest in public services including the CBC. The End.

[-] CanIFishHere@lemmy.ca 0 points 2 days ago

Just so I can know for the future, is it only the CBC funding I'm not allowed to have an opinion on? Or are there other government policies I can't have an opinion on? Or is it just all government policies that are off limits? Like in China and Russia.
