His own general literally kidnapped him to force him to stop shooting at the communists

Generalissimo Cash My Check, as his handlers called him.

It's my understanding the united front ceased to exist functionally after 1941. There was that big incident where Chiang Kai-shek ordered two communist divisions to go north of the Yangtze river, but once they got there they got ambushed by nationalist forces.

Except the effect of this was Chinese civilians simply heard "Chinese government betrays and shoots Chinese soldiers who were doing their job" when everyone was supposed to be on the same side against Japan. So I have to imagine that incident got a lot of everyday Chinese people interested in revolution

what if it was chiang kai shrek and he just wanted communists out of his swamp?

What if instead of the White Terror it was the Green Terror?

Yeah another rarely mentioned event is after japan surrendered to America they were only allowed to hand over their occupied territory to the nationalists so you had American's assisting Japanese occupation over parts of the country that had been de facto communist held for years

The two good things the Taiwanese DPP has done:

  • Legislating same-sex marriage
  • Removing Chiang statues and portraits from public buildings and putting the statues in a little park of shame (like de-Leninisation but good)

Removing Chiang statues

I doubt the dpp is particularly concerned with Chiang's conduct during the war, they just want to remove taiwan's connections with the mainland and that includes statues of chiang

yeah it's a heartbreaking kind of thing. they changed the passports to say "Taiwan" rather than "ROC" for the same reason

the DPP do recognise the White Terror as having happened though, while it's more a sensitive issue with the (perpetrators) GMD. while at the same time the DPP are quiet about Japanese warcrimes during the occupation era for realpolitik reasons. it's what redditors call an "ESH" situation

I once knew someone who really liked Chiang Kai-shek. He considered him a tragic nationalist hero, who was dealt a bad hand against the "commies". Granted, this person was already noted to have liked controversial figures of the Three Kingdoms and would work backwards to come up with reasons to support them. Although for what it's worth, he was a decent writer about it (although most of it has been lost because he would purge his accounts often). He was most noted for liking Zhong Hui and Jiang Wei of the Three Kingdoms, both of whom were tragic figures (from a certain viewpoint) in regards of both their ambition and complex loyalty to their respective state.

That being said, he was also exactly the right-wing dipshit you would expect from someone who liked Chiang. Always racist against the global south (with some dogwhistles), and being for the genocide of Palestine for no other reason than to spite the liberal he frequent with and being "tired" of seeing it in the news.
