Oof. And your insurance won't cover the ones that work for you so hope you can get a hardship application in.

[-] cannibalkitteh@piefed.blahaj.zone 39 points 2 weeks ago

Or the doctor won't prescribe the one you know works unless you try 2-3 that gave you a psychotic break last time because "It works for most people".

[-] PP_BOY_@lemmy.world 29 points 2 weeks ago

because ~~“It works for most people”.~~ "The drug reps catered us Outback last week."

[-] zebidiah@lemmy.ca 5 points 2 weeks ago

I mean sure, you're going to be climbing the walls and losing your shit for 90+ days (if you're lucky) but on the other hand...... That Bloomin onion!!

They don't even do that. I still hate it here, I just don't get so easily sucked into an immobilizing "death spiral" of dwelling on just how badly I want to not be on this planet

[-] psivchaz@reddthat.com 20 points 2 weeks ago

My experience is "pills that make you think less often about how much you hate it."

By making you think less generally.

[-] dohpaz42@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

Fuck. That would be so nice right now.

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 22 points 2 weeks ago

We totally can. It's just difficult to get past that some people want more than others even if that means harming them.

[-] VieuxQueb@lemmy.ca 18 points 2 weeks ago

Some people take joy in hurting others. I have no faith that we can fix that.

[-] Zephyr@sh.itjust.works 3 points 2 weeks ago

Fix? Not without some eugenics (traditional or modern). Mitigate? We can definitely mitigate it. There was a study recently that showed that it's not really the punishment for a crime that dieters people, it's the probability they will or won't get caught that's the primary factor. So for instance if there's a 98% chance they will get caught people are unlikely to commit the crime and if there is a 5% chance they will be caught they are much more likely to commit the crime even if the punishment is extremely harsh. There's of course a balancing act between personal freedoms and privacy and the ability to catch people aka the more privacy people have the more difficult it is to catch crime and generally the less privacy (and ability to parse large sums of data) the easier it is.

Eugenics, yeah, cool. Love it.

Laws aren't a tool for preventing bad outcomes, and if you think they're the primary tool you are not a serious person and will not create a functional society.

You would rather change what humanity is on a biological level than fucking acknowledge that existing power structures are nonsense and horrible?

I would ask what drugs you're on, but since monday I've been on or around people who were on acid molly coke meth weed severe head trauma alcohol none of their prescribed antipsychotics dilotted and some rich people designer bullshit that's just strings of letters and numbers I can never remember. None of it made any of them this deranged.

I'm not even against some people having a little more or less. Some people genuinely like subsistence farming and singing in the town choir and chilling in the woods. Some people like gaming computers or kayaks or rock climbing. Some people like cocaine, or rockets, or super computers. That's all fine. You don't need to push a rocket powered super computing gaming yacht on the peasantry fetishist. They don't want that and will not appreciate you for it.

Its the hoarding and bullshit I can't with. The inefficiency. The having so much at the expense of more existing. The militarized bullshit to keep the inequalities and inefficiencies. The arrangement of the entire world around them.

"They're the most expensive placebo I can prescribe"

[-] architectonas@lemmy.world 12 points 2 weeks ago

Depressing. Any optimistic stances here on Lemmy to cheer me up?

[-] kofe@lemmy.world 16 points 2 weeks ago

Pills aren't there to convince us everything is ok. They're more often useful in getting us to a baseline where we can better manage and take control of our lives where we can. If a psychiatrist/therapist is saying something like in this meme, get a new one. There are more resources out there than just pills and therapy

I say this as someone taking pills, going to therapy, and receiving a ton of other support through government programs in a red state in the US. I'd been struggling with suicidal ideation for decades, and in the last year I've made some good progress. There's shitty aspects to life, and I've got a ways to go to meet the goals I've set for therapy, but it's still worth living for me

[-] architectonas@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Glad to hear you're doing better. All the best to you!

[-] Toga77@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

I'm on an SNRI and my wife is on an SSRI.

Both have been life changing for both of us in the best way.

Our psych is great and also requested a genetic test that found out I was predisposed to serotonin syndrome from the drug most commonly prescribed for my issue.

So we caught that early and we have been doing great for years now.

It's not a trick of the brain. That much is obvious when you are able to use the drugs to get back to and maintain a much better baseline, but it's not drugs alone.

You have to work for it, you cannot just take drugs and think they're going to fix you. Underlying mental issues from buried trauma are so much more real than most people still think in 2026.

[-] kofe@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Yess I did the genesite test, too. Weirdly found out I also don't process synthetic folate from it!

[-] Toga77@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Same here! Menthyl folate has also helped me greatly.

That test should probably be done more often 😂

Yeah, but it usually won't get as much engagement. The good things that are happening to this day don't really get much coverage, so it can be easy to despair and become pessimistic. There are certainly some awful things happening in the world, but that's basically always been true. We're not helpless to overcome the systems of oppression that hold us down/back. It's in our nature as humans to work together and there are plenty of movements out there already working tirelessly to make the world a better place. Did you know we can pretty safely say we've avoided the absolute worst possible scenario of climate change? As in, it's still getting worse right now and we've still got a hell of a fight right in front of us, but we've made actual real progress despite all the current bullshit. Fighting the systems creating climate change and winning is possible. Not only is a better world possible, but people are actively coming together to make it happen. People are being pulled out of poverty, plastic in the oceans are getting cleaned up, harm reduction programs are popping up everywhere, malnutrition is still on the decline, there are plenty of good things happening in the world. It being the nature of humans to work together and it generally being in the best interest of everyone for us to all to work together, I see no reason to believe the work for good will even slow down.

[-] architectonas@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, but if you where medicated you might have the means to create that society. Not alone obviously.

[-] zarathustrad@lemmy.world 9 points 2 weeks ago

The best I can do is some soma to help you in this Brave New World.

[-] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

I’m in if you also invite me to your mandatory orgy

[-] 404found@lemmy.zip 9 points 2 weeks ago

Yes, some people actually need antidepressants but we will never know who those people are because the bar is so low for prescribing antidepressants.

  1. fill out a short questionnaire with limited options for answers.

  2. no further significant clinical evaluation done like bloodwork, scans or testing is performed. Providers are just eyeball low levels of hormones in your brain.

  3. not enough time for a provider to come up with a proper treatment in a 15 minute appointment. Providers can't overhaul the system they work in. They have 40 other people to see today.

  4. Kickbacks. Wait, that's illegal and never happens.

[-] Bristlecone@lemmy.world 8 points 2 weeks ago

I don't appreciate this characterization of antidepressants but I do understand it

[-] c64z86@piefed.world 8 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

The real cure will take far more than any amount of pills can provide.

[-] sangriaferret@sh.itjust.works 4 points 2 weeks ago

But they can assist you along the way

We don't understand happiness or contentment and so money is the north star.

So our society is run by brain broken rich people, who continue a destructive pattern of behavior long after it's useful. To them I guess happiness feels like materialism. I assume that's why they project jealousy on everyone and view everything as a zero sum game.

[-] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

It's kinda hard not to be depressed and to live without pills when you realize that practically all of the world's problems are entirely artificial, and most could be solved in a manner of years.

If it wasn't for bloodthirsty, sociopathic pedophiles and mass murderers, for whom the only objective in life is creating as much suffering as possible and raping as many children as possible.

[-] PhoenixDog@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

The entire world came together to fix a massive hole in our atmosphere.

But we can't be bothered to feed people.

[-] sangriaferret@sh.itjust.works 6 points 2 weeks ago

"Better living through chemistry"

[-] essell@lemmy.world 6 points 2 weeks ago

That's fair. Your therapist isn't there to fix the whole world with you.

That what you do outside the therapy room

[-] OozingPositron@feddit.cl 4 points 2 weeks ago

Take your Soma.

[-] m3t00@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

dick pills. let little brain drive a while 🧠

[-] Hupf@feddit.org 3 points 2 weeks ago

"Sounds like a you problem"

[-] hOrni@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

Good enough for me. Can I have them, please?

I herd an interesting theory that such pills and psychology as a whole only exists cos it is economically more efficient to convince people to be OK with their situation

[-] CultLeader4Hire@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yes a system corrupted by narcissism also suggests narcissistic solutions like use the gray rock method and meditate or medicate so the narcissist doesn’t have to do any work or change in anyway but you might find them more tolerable to live with for a while.

[-] Tacky4092@feddit.org 2 points 2 weeks ago

close enough i say!

[-] AlexNorris@lemmy.zip 2 points 2 weeks ago

Nowadays it's this is kinda transparency is hard to get 🤔 who say to your face I am fooling you
