My partner's philosophy/polit sci prof was a communist from Lebanon that gave us pamphlets from Hezbollah and taught us about the PFLP and just a genuinely good dude. Had enough pull to get former Black Panther/Young Lords/Rainbow Coalition members to come speak and opened class to anyone that wanted to drop in. Ended up living next door to him and hang out with him regularly.

During my short stint at university my best class by far was History of Latin America. The professor taught the class from an openly Marxist perspective. It's where I was first introduced to the concept of Global Systems Theory. The final slide he put up on the wall for the final class simply stated There can be no democracy without socialism, nor socialism without democracy.

Absolute king shit. I LOVED that class.

I should count myself lucky that the most i ever really dealt with in college was the one history class where the professor (who also played in a local punk band) was very much a "It would be cool if communism worked, but like, it just doesn't" type
