According to Harvard research, eating oranges stimulates growth of Faecalibacterium prausnitzia.

This bacteria lives inside the human gut and generates serotonin and dopamine — 2 powerful molecules that elevate your mood.

Harvard is one of the top 5 research universities in the world. Gary Ruvkun won the 2024 Nobel Prize in Medicine. Where does he work ? Harvard.

The study is more correlation than causality. Even though they tried to be careful they did not (and can't) account for a plethora of confounding factors, which – especially with depression – is particularly problematic.

They provide a plausible explanation for a causal pathway, but did not prove it. This provides a testable hypothesis, which is why I would read this more like "more research needed", rather than definitive proof. I wouldn't go as far as to say "eat an orange a day, to keep depression away". Although it probably wouldn't hurt to eat some more fruit, given how bad the fruit content in most people's diet is anyway.

So this is, unfortunately, a rather sensationalist takeaway you've provided here, OP. But that's the curse of how we're doing capitalism. Even 'top research universities' like Harvard need to be sensationalist to attract some publicity and get their research funded.

Have a shower orange.

Put orange in fridge to make it cool. Take orange to shower. Observe orange and realize you can eat it as messy and feral as you want. Go full lycanthrope on the orange. Shower off the juice. Go back to being an animal pretending to blend into a society, but now, you know better.

I suggest using a drain filter, then you can just spit out any seeds and just drop the bitter stringy parts.

Aren't they the same substance used in the white part of the peel below the delicious zest? Though I might be thinking about clementines and the white stringy bits that run from top to bottom along the centre. Been a while since I had a proper orange but don't they have even more of that white stuff?

I think the membrane that surrounds the little juice packets is also bitter, if you separate it from the good parts.

[-] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 2 points 21 hours ago* (last edited 21 hours ago)

Honestly, I have no idea, I can't even taste bitter, I just eat it all haha

[-] Buddahriffic@lemmy.world 1 points 18 hours ago

Ah lol. What about the peel? The zest is delicious but the white part is awful. You normally gotta be careful if you're using a shredder or microplane when zesting because if you go too deep it tastes pretty bitter. Though the texture is also not very appealing, though I do wonder how much of that is from the flavour.

[-] NikkiDimes@lemmy.world 2 points 15 hours ago

Oh, wow, I had no idea. I don't use zest too often, but I'll have to keep that in mind next time! I could probably end up making something that I think tastes amazing while being completely off-putting to others if I'm not careful 😅

Hello poor person. Are you sad because the unprecedented rise of global wealth inequality and corruption has robbed you of any realistic hope for success and stability? Have you tried eating an orange?

[-] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 8 points 1 day ago

I can't afford an orange, so no...

[-] JadenSmith@sh.itjust.works 1 points 21 hours ago

The only oranges I see smell a lot like kerosene...

Sounds like something Big-Citrus would say.

[-] Scotty_Trees@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I've had chronic pain and depression since I was a kid, I don't think oranges can fix me, but thanks for the advice, I'm sure it'll help someone that's better off.

Oranges are yummy and keep you from getting scurvy

Oranges and other citrus fruit are also significantly acidic, which is hard on teef. So try not to go overboard, or at least rinse your mouth with water afterwards if you eat citrus regularly.

By the same token, do not rinse your mouth with water after brushing your teeth. This gives more of the toothpaste's fluoride a chance to adhere, from my understanding.

[-] getFrog@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

I don't need the serotonin and dopamine inside my gut, I need it in my brain. ..Will shoving an orange up my nose work?

[-] braxy29@lemmy.world 3 points 1 day ago

look up gut-brain axis and mental health for some new insights

[-] OozingPositron@feddit.cl 2 points 1 day ago

I used to take pieces of orange peel, bend them so the inside turns convex and inhale it through my nose, it helped me stay awake in class.

[-] JackFrostNCola@aussie.zone 4 points 1 day ago

I do a similar thing but i bend the orange peel inside a short glass to spritz the oils, then occasionally lift the glass to my nose and enjoy.

Oh i forgot i also add ~80ml of whiskey, a squirt of simple syrup and 3 dashes of bitters first.

I don't wanna be that guy, but I have to be fair and ask:

Why should I know this?

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 5 points 1 day ago

Because you're in denial about your depression

[-] MajorMajormajormajor@lemmy.ca 3 points 1 day ago

What if I'm depressed about my denial?

[-] rob_t_firefly@lemmy.world 2 points 1 day ago

Oh no I'm not.

[-] Sludge@sh.itjust.works 10 points 1 day ago

Because if you're sad now, but you want to be happy - you should probably eat an orange. It's a nice thing to know

No, those are the fruits of manufactured suffering, not joyous wonders

[-] quick_snail@feddit.nl 2 points 21 hours ago

You sound depressed.

Can I offer you a lemon in these trying times

[-] GarboDog@lemmy.world 2 points 12 hours ago

We are but that’s besides the point, we actually meant it in a literal way lmao

Lemons are manufactured by mixing a Citron and a Bitter Orange. They’re are not naturally occurring in any way, while the orange is a fully natural occurring fruit. Other than that, lemons are metaphorically seen as struggles or suffering while oranges are shown to be liquid sunshine or joy.

That’s all we meant by lemons being manufactured suffering and oranges being joyous wonders. Was just play on words on our part

[-] GarboDog@lemmy.world 1 points 12 hours ago

Also we like both lemons and oranges thx for lemon 🍋 lol
