It should be taught at schools to not make your first email like firstname.lastname@hotmail.com

[-] SEND_BUTTPLUG_PICS@lemmy.zip 21 points 2 weeks ago

Why? I have firstnamelastname@domain.com and it makes giving out my email address super easy when I have to speak it aloud to someone who already has my full name.

For those who value privacy, it's bad opsec. First, your personal info such as real name should not be provided to every website you sign up for etc. Secondly, when info like that gets compromised you can't (easily) change your name, but it's easy to abandon some non-personal email. Same with biometric data - if your password is your fingerprint and an attacker is able to replicate it, you're screwed forever, instead of being able to just change to a new password.

I have a firstname.lastname email address, but I only use it for e.g. my son's school or work contacts, who already know me by my real name. It's not associated with any accounts or login info. I have an awful email address I created when I was 16 that gets used for signing up for random junk.

[-] valar@lemmy.ca 6 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

Yeah, I think its appropriate for e.g. government or job related stuff. Smart to use a burner for other stuff. Thee are also email alias services that allow you to make up new addresses that forward to your main account.

[-] SpaceNoodle@lemmy.world 4 points 2 weeks ago

I remember what that was recommended.

The oldest message in my mailbox was a list of all my classmates' email addresses from when we made our Hotmail accounts back in 1998 as part of an IT course.

So I said hi.

All but three of them bounced, and the rest didn't answer ๐Ÿฅฒ

Tbf my first email has been so utterly destroyed by spam that there's a big chance I missed an old contact sending me something.

Plus since they all got bought out by Microsoft and converted into Outlook, there's an even better chance that the useless spam filter decided to throw only an actual message into the spam folder, which conveniently gets deleted after 30 days, despite only ever having like 20 emails tops.

Can't even remember the old hotmail UI anymore ;/

Got real awkward looking for my first job using my splat00nn00b@hotmail.com address.

[-] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 10 points 2 weeks ago

Could be worse. My sister picked one that ended up being the username of a popular drawn porn artist over a decade later.

[-] JennaR8r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 3 points 2 weeks ago

drawn? Like pencil drawings?

[-] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

2d art. I just meant not live action.

[-] idunnololz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

One of my previous co-workers shared a name with a popular porn star.

[-] Quetzalcutlass@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Did anyone ever bring it up, or were there just awkward silences whenever they introduced themselves?

[-] idunnololz@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago* (last edited 2 weeks ago)

I didn't even know. They brought it up during a conversation at lunch. I don't usually know porn actor names :/

[-] QuinnyCoded@sh.itjust.works 10 points 2 weeks ago

the process of legally changing my name was WAY easier than the process of changing to a email with my new name

[-] qaz@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

Tip, get a domain with your last name so you can immediately change the name and have the old email redirect to the new

[-] skeptomatic@lemmy.ca 9 points 2 weeks ago

Hi, I am a Nigerian prince and need to stash my millions of dollars. I would like you to give me access to your bank account so I can deposit the money.

With kind regards,

The Nigerian prince

[-] espentan@lemmy.world 3 points 2 weeks ago

He, I remember I replied to one of these with a burner account. The instructions I got back were adamant that I did not loop my bank in on what was happening. I replied that I understood but that I always let my bank handle such matters for me and that I had sent all the details/instructions to my contact at the bank.

The next reply I got began; "NOOO NOOO, YOU MUST NOT DO THAT ONLY YOU MUST KNOW ABOUT THIS".

The email is the thing you send with your email address as the sender.

I wonder if there is someone out there correcting basically every instance of IP to IP address

[-] merc@sh.itjust.works 1 points 2 weeks ago

Let's hope so. These heroes need to be recognized and saluted.

I have been a turbo nerd since I was very young so I have had my own domain name as my email for a long time which makes it easy to change providers and addresses. I can change my email and if years down the road I want to access an old service and I find out that I was using a different name on the domain I have been using forever I can just setup a new forward to recover the account. I also setup forwards for basically every service I sign up for in case I they get hacked or I just want to shut off their stupid automated emails.

I am basically shocked when I get spam. I am very curious where it came from and I can pinpoint it's source.

gilfisbetterthanmilf67@gmail.com

No kidding my 13year old nephew made this account in February, little fucker is still grounded.

[-] JennaR8r@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I have questions. 1) is "gilf" grandma? 2) Your epithet for your nephew is "little fucker," and you're shocked that his young little mind is so corrupt?

[-] faintwhenfree@lemmus.org 3 points 2 weeks ago
  1. He refuses to talk about it, but that's what my sister has assumed.
  2. Not shocked just amused.
[-] basxto@discuss.tchncs.de 1 points 2 weeks ago

tbh, this could be a very elaborate 6 7 joke, since 67 is gilf age

[-] texture@lemmy.world 1 points 2 weeks ago

wow! long time no see, how have you been?

Younger Richie had the gift of foresight.

[-] Nomad@infosec.pub 3 points 2 weeks ago

Get into self hosting already. Next stage of evolution. Custom domain, custom spam filter. New start really. Been doing it for 15 years now and comes with the added benefit for free email with firstname@familyname.de.

[-] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 weeks ago

I wouldn't trust myself to host something as important as email. Having it on your own domain is a good idea tho

[-] basxto@discuss.tchncs.de 2 points 2 weeks ago

gamer-@gmail.com

[-] BurgerBaron@piefed.social 2 points 2 weeks ago

damaster2230@hotmail.com ๐Ÿ˜ RIP long gone.

I still have my live.ca account but it's boring first/last name type deal and then only used now for the increasingly rare website that won't let you sign up with a custom domain name.

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 2 points 2 weeks ago

I did shed CountryBoy007 before settling on my name.

[-] irelephant@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 weeks ago

I had the foresight to switch to a better one like ~2 years later.
