The IRGC is mainly interested in assuming control of shipping and charging tolls on oil right now. That alone upends centuries of American foreign policy, and sets a precedent that paves the way for a return to mercantilism.

With control over the strait, they can decide how many oil tankers get through, which is a direct lever on the price of oil, solely in their power. Further, that bitcoin fee not only affects the status of the USD as the world reserve currency, it can also much fund most of their government and effectively sidestep the intended effect of sanctions.

They don't need to charge tolls on any other kind of boat to absolutely be claiming victory with this. To say nothing of a Russian oligarch's yacht.

One thing I've gotta hand to the Trump regime, the shit they're pulling is getting (at least some) people to learn all sorts of stuff about history and civics that they never had to care about before.

I'm betting the 3^rd^ Amendment is gonna become relevant again any day now, if nothing else, just so Stephen Miller can finish filling out his Bill of Rights violation bingo card.

Iran's enemy is the leadership of the US. Maybe their supporters in a very secondary way. Their best outcome is to achieve their political goals with as little effort as possible, including shooting. If they can achieve what they want better by being nice to rich people, they're doing that. And they're doing that.

Meaning there is no reason for Chinese, European or other rich people to go there and try it, but if they did, I don't think Iran would shoot on them either.

Also, Russia and Iran are cooperating. Duh.

That thing has a lot of radomes. Looks like a spy ship to me. Maybe it's helping Iran keeping an eye on the strait.

The Strait isn't "blocked" as in a physical mine field. They can allow boats through as they wish.

... there are mines

Because it's not an oil tanker.

Even if Iran had decided to block all boats, which I don't think that they have, unlikely that they would waste the resources.

What do they fill them with? Non-stop visiting friends? The caretakers? Are they mostly empty?
