Does he not realize that the Hagia Sophia is not under the control of the US in any way, shape, or form?

If I had to guess, I'm assuming this is coming from the seemingly common belief amongst the crowd of a certain political persuasion that Christians are the most persecuted people in the world ever, and that Muslims are trying to kill us all or convert us all to their religion?

For those who don't know, the original Hagia Sophia was one of the most impressive construction speed-run of all time. Completed in just under 6 years with 4th 6th century tech. They botched it a bit so the roof fell but still very impressive.

Edit: 6th century tech, first church was made in 4th century, current structure with the speed run was started in 532 and finished in 537.

Okay, ignoring that reading this has made me even stupider - I always assume there was SOME kind of thought process that lead to such statements (yeah yeah I know, haha politicians and thought processes ololollol) and I'm very interested in this one. What exactly happened there? Where did the connection between the Hagia Sophia and the office of senator for South Carolina come from? What is he free-associating?
