Chapter spoiler
Imu looks waaaay different than I think anyone expected, almost they're from a different manga, but it seems like what we're seeing isn't his true form. Also does "Power: The Devil's Fruit" imply that he's the source of the devil fruit???
He reminds me a lot of Enel. Enel could see everything through mantra, and IMU has eyes every where. Enel has that ring piercing which looks a lot like the awakening smoke. They're both from some ancient race. IMU looks to be in a similar pose as Enel. Looks like they go to the same tailor. They both have long weapons. Staff vs glaive. The two arcs have similarities as well. Elbaf is even talked about in a similar way to skypeia. Upper and lower garden vs sun world and underworld.
So I think IMU fits inside one-piece pretty well
To me the tattoos/body markings are the most non-One Piece part of the design but that also makes them stand out in a way that implies they're important.
chapter
I think that Imu's devil horns look very similar to what we've seen on ancient giants/oni. It might be that he's a different race (the theory that the celestial dragons were settlers from outer space who tried colonizing the one piece world which was still being ruled by tyrants).
Power: The Devil's Fruit" imply that he's the source of the devil fruit?
Yeah, it feels almost confirmed that Imu was the creator of devil fruits or at the very least tied to them in a very important way. It could also just be a "human human fruit, model: devil" so we'll just have to wait and see.
spoiler
I definitely think this isn't Imu's true form because they have a transformation sequence after teleporting, the question is how much is the devil power vs their actual form. The horns feel distinct enough that we'd be able to see them in the silhouette with the crown.

You just know the post arc for Elbaph is going to go hard (I will scream if time dilation theory is true). It's still vague enough that we don't know who is attacking and for what reason.

York was so defeatist that she had a machine that had infinite food for her and still chose to side with the world government. Funny how she joined them right as they were being besieged. It seems that they just moved the mother flame over to Mariegeoisie since with Punk Records gone there was no point in keeping Egghead Island around.

Damn, did literally every pirate crew start going for the One Piece? This is so exciting.
Anyway, this chapter makes me feel like Elbaph is like Thriller Bark, especially with the hidden Brook lore. Imu showing up feels a lot like Kuma showing up after they defeated the colossal nightmare creatures. If Imu actually gets defeated this arc then it'd be a historic upset (but how else is Garling, Shamrock and Akainu going to be serious candidates for the One Piece?) Imu has just been shown to be so impotent and paranoid that Imu feels more like Orochi than Kaido.
Also "we should head into the field again" to do what bro? Get punched the fuck out by another giant (giant robot and now giant Loki)?
I stopped reading when they got to Elbaph because I felt like the writing had fallen off - They're split up again, Usopp is even more of a chickenshit, nami wears even less clothes, etc. I managed to make it to Shanks evil twin and then I decided to take a break.
Has things improved since then? Do you feel like the manga is in a good place right now, or are you just reading to make it to the end?
Is it a good time to get back into it, or will I just get more annoyed?
I would say right now isn't a good time to catch up to following weekly because it's seeming like the third act of the arc where there's a lot of action and lighter on story stuff. There was some fantastic lore payoffs in the mid-arc flashback but if you can hold out until the end of the arc you'd probably enjoy it more.
Alright, thank you
The start of new arcs are always difficult to read weekly (especially since elbalph started with a mini filler arc), the middle of the arc was really good to read weekly and I assume this end of the arc scenario will also be nice to read weekly.
Most manga are best enjoyed in volume format so if that's what you enjoy then just read the volumes as they release (+ they don't have art errors). I read weekly because it's become a habit for me and Oda's art is always really good if not anything else.
Usopp felt very inconsistent this arc but I think that might change. He's always been a gag character and an audience stand-in/comic relief so I think people have the wrong expectations for his character. I think this is similar for all the straw hats who have already had their character arcs so they would logically feel like static characters in later arcs.
Honestly, with how close it seems to the end, I'd just wait until it was finished and then read through it all in a few hours.
Thanks!
Is it actually close?
IIRC this is the final saga and it's already been going for like 3 years at this point so there can't be too much more.
Elbaph is very much feeling like a 2nd to last or 3rd to last arc, a lot of things are being paid off and revealed.
