Hey, if any teenagers want to hack the US and release the epstein files, please do. Also, if you want to crash some markets, please do. It will mean you don't have to get a job and will be super cool. I promise. Please

"Go socialize with your friends."

"All my friends are in different parts of the world and we socialize by talking or playing games online."

This was me in the 90s. I can't imagine it being different for a lot of kids today. Even if these bans weren't thinly veiled surveillance methods, I'd still be opposed to it.

I think things are changing. Cause back then there was not many good arguments. You already see a trend of going back to analog tech.

[-] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 3 points 2 days ago

What do you mean with "analog tech"?

[-] atcorebcor@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 day ago

It’s not the right word but when I wrote it I was too lazy to think of a better one. Think of disposable cameras, dumb phones, and vintage tech. It’s in now.

Hehe, no worries.

I watched a video yesterday, that one major youtuber, the one with the glasses and big mustache, he went a month without a phone. It was a good video. He used a old timey alarm clock, notepad, had a phone that plugs into the wall and all that good stuff. After that youtube decided to recommend a bunch of similar videos. Looks like its really happening, at least on some level.

For me, I've sort of accidentally drifted away from using my phone. It used to be that I had to charge it twice a day, now I have over 60% of battery left when I go to bed. I deleted my discord account and removed the app, now I'm not constantly checking the phone every time someone shares a meme.

I went back to IRC, at first I thought "oh better get a bouncer or a mobile app so I can keep in touch" but I procrastinated, turns out that was the right choice. I'm not worried about missing out on what people say when I'm not at home, or sleeping, or whatever. I don't spend the first 30minutes of the day going through what was said during the night. Its quite freeing. I now use the phone more as a mp3/audiobook/podcast player.

Thanks for sharing. I’m still trying to break loose. There’s a lot of things you have to replace over time.

It will be different when they‘re forced to socialize IRL. Because now all the other kids are not online 24/7 either. This supposed problem is solving itself. I‘m a little more concerned about their lack of experience with the medium once they‘re allowed to use it. Then again a lot of them will use it anyway but even less supervised than before.

You clearly haven't grown up in a small, rural area where you have nobody IRL to socialize with.

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

People don‘t go to school in rural areas?

[-] CyberEgg@discuss.tchncs.de 12 points 2 days ago

Or in a situation where socializing with kids your age mostly meant being bullied.

[-] HuudaHarkiten@piefed.social 8 points 2 days ago

Ha. That reminds of the time when my parents kept pestering me about sitting at the computer all day. Once they asked why do I "refuse" to go out with my mates. I replied with "why would I want to go out with people who bully me, when I can sit in IRC and talk to people who actually like me?" That shut them up for good about the topic lol

[-] CosmoNova@lemmy.world -2 points 1 day ago

Thank god cyberbullying isn‘t a thing because you can always walk away from your phone and spend time with your many offline friends! /s

No mention that the people they are experiencing on have given their consent for this experiment.

Performative pseudo scientific bullshit, they already made up their mind before the results. It's entirely supposed to be used for as a political excuse.

[-] stickly@lemmy.world 0 points 15 hours ago

Pseudo science? There's boat loads of evidence that social media has negative impacts on mental health, especially for developing minds (to say nothing of other damage linked to screen time). The question for the last decade or so has been measuring exactly how bad it is and what policies work to mitigate it.

And setting out a limited trial of a few hundred split into different treatment groups is just... regular science. Unless you have some airtight proof against the theory or methods, you're sounding like the one who's made up their mind.

Personally I'm not giving the benefit of the doubt to propoganda platforms built with the explicit goal of addictive engagement.

I thought the right to assemble and to communicate was a fundamental human right agreed by all UN member states?

  2. No links to misinformation or commercial advertising. When you post outdated/historic articles, add the year of publication to the post title. Infographics must include a source and a year of creation; if possible, also provide a link to the source.
  3. Be kind to each other, and argue in good faith. Don't post direct insults nor disrespectful and condescending comments. Don't troll nor incite hatred. Don't look for novel argumentation strategies at Wikipedia's List of fallacies.
  4. No bigotry, sexism, racism, antisemitism, islamophobia, dehumanization of minorities, or glorification of National Socialism. We follow German law; don't question the statehood of Israel.
  5. Be the signal, not the noise: Strive to post insightful comments. Add "/s" when you're being sarcastic (and don't use it to break rule no. 3).
  6. If you link to paywalled information, please provide also a link to a freely available archived version. Alternatively, try to find a different source.
  7. Light-hearted content, memes, and posts about your European everyday belong in other communities.
  8. Don't evade bans. If we notice ban evasion, that will result in a permanent ban for all the accounts we can associate with you.
  9. No posts linking to speculative reporting about ongoing events with unclear backgrounds. Please wait at least 12 hours. (E.g., do not post breathless reporting on an ongoing terror attack.)
  10. Always provide context with posts: Don't post uncontextualized images or videos, and don't start discussions without giving some context first.

(This list may get expanded as necessary.)

Posts that link to the following sources will be removed

Unless they're the only sources, please also avoid The Sun, Daily Mail, any "thinktank" type organization, and non-Lemmy social media (incl. Substack). Don't link to Twitter directly, instead use xcancel.com. For Reddit, use old:reddit:com

(Lists may get expanded as necessary.)

Ban lengths, etc.

We will use some leeway to decide whether to remove a comment.

If need be, there are also bans: 3 days for lighter offenses, 7 or 14 days for bigger offenses, and permanent bans for people who don't show any willingness to participate productively. If we think the ban reason is obvious, we may not specifically write to you.

If you want to protest a removal or ban, feel free to write privately to the admin that applied the rule (check modlog first to find who was it.)
