The Cold War never ended.

Task failed successfully

He said later that all one needed to do to conduct a press conference was to be able to speak German and read a text without mistakes. Accordingly, he read the note aloud at the end of the press conference. One of the reporters asked when the regulations would come into effect. Schabowski assumed that it would be the same day based on the wording of the note, and he replied after a few seconds' pause: "As far as I know... effective immediately, without delay." (German: Das tritt nach meiner Kenntnis... ist das sofort... unverzüglich.)

If only the Cold War were really over.

Don’t worry, it’s getting hotter now.

Russia can’t even successfully invade their neighbor, a former USSR member

[-] BarneyPiccolo@lemmy.today 7 points 1 day ago

The Russkies are better at Cold Wars than Hot Wars. America is just bad at everything.

[-] lemongarlic@lemmy.world 5 points 1 day ago

I mean like a month ago the US did what Russia failed to in Ukraine, yoinking Maduro and de facto taking over the country. The US similarly killed Iran’s leader like a few days into the war.

It's good at deposing, air strikes, and terror, but sucks at actually fighting the leftover armies.

It will get it's teeth kicked in.

But the USSR was able to propogate to the CCP which is propping up former USSR allies for proxy war including Cuba, Venezuela, Indonesia, North Korea, and Iran. They regularly prop up the Russian economy enabling the invasion of Ukraine. Recently they've expanding military coverage to Africa under the guise of space exploration. Among their more aggressive actions is supplying the weapons used by Hamas to attack the music festival and reignite the war used by Israel as an excuse to commit genocide. China also uses TikTok as a way to push their agenda and explicitly supported the Trump reelection which led to the largest rightward shift in youth voters ever recorded. China has managed to reclaim Hong Kong and is planning to conquer Taiwan, both notably US Allies in the east. They're also highly aggressive with India, Australia, Phillipines, and Japan. In the past two decades there have been numerous occasions where one side took a submarine up to the opponent's shores as a threat.

The cold war is still on. The tyrannical communist dictatorships are still around and trying to get bigger all the time.

Some of your claims are questionable. Cuba hasn't been a serious flashpoint for a proxy war in decades, and Indonesia is generally close with the US. Their presence in Africa has largely been predicated on naked economic reasons, not so much space exploration. Hamas does use Chinese weapons, but to my knowledge there's no link to China itself - they're just smuggled weapons of various national origins. Hong Kong was always going to revert back to China - it was agreed upon in the lease China signed with the UK back in the 19th century. While the UK is a US ally, it would be strange to assert Hong Kong, specifically, was.

Cuba was used as a base to host nuclear weapons during the Cuban Missile Crisis of 1962, it's still ruled by the Castro Family who handpicked the current president who worked for the regime for decades.

While I think maybe they're as a whole not as loyal to China as they were the USSR, that there is room for negotiations, I do see it as a player in the ongoing cold war.

EDIT: Also lets not pretend the handover of Hong Kong was peaceful. China filled the street with soldiers, rolled tanks and convoys into the capital.

[-] PugJesus@piefed.social 7 points 1 day ago

You can say China is propping them up, but propping them up for a proxy war is a stretch. The only people who've been barking for war with Cuba for at least the past 30 years have been, unfortunately, American politicians.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 2 points 1 day ago

Time has passed but they have not changed substantially.

[-] PugJesus@piefed.social 6 points 1 day ago

Sure, but Cuba has never been a serious battleground proposal in the course of my life, is all I'm saying. Not saying the PRC isn't playing international games, just that Cuba is like... not particularly featured in anyone's plans, except Cuba. And a few American warhawk lunatics.

[-] lemongarlic@lemmy.world 1 points 1 day ago

Just because the countries that were in or aligned with the former USSR are working against American interests doesn’t mean the Cold War never ended lol. For example the fight with China is much more about economics trade manufacturing influence etc than over communism vs capitalism and China isn’t even communist anymore. The conflict with China is definitely a different one imo bound by very different rules

Purely Economic Reasons?

Is that why they put restrictions on fertilizer exports as the global market tightened, as if they weren't only selling excess? Is that why they're backing the Iranian regime to control natural gas supplies while already having nearly infinite natural gas with no buyers to compete with from Russia? Is that why they tear down temples in Tibet, commit genocide in Xinjiang, and use extreme force to recapture Hong Kong and soon Taiwan? Is that why they used TikTok to promote Donald Trump, the most anti-trade potus in over a century?

China is a malignant tumor on this world, Xi Jinping is playing a game of Conquest like his predecessors. The vast majority of their foreign policy is completely malicious and has no economic benefits.

We can safely say the Red Scare hasn't ended, at least.

[-] tomiant@piefed.social 5 points 1 day ago

We have hot war now. Reheated, but at least it's hot. That's some kind of progress.

[-] FiniteBanjo@feddit.online 5 points 1 day ago

Not really. We had more proxy wars between the far west and east in the past. A hot war would be a direct conflict between the USA and China/Russia.
