Literally mask off "use storytelling to turn your sales pitch into an epic tale to emotionally manipulate your client into buying your shit without thinking about it". That is barely editorialized that is almost word for word.

Sales is the fucking worst, I interviewed/trained for a scummy sales job once when I was desperate for employment, it was incredibly sleazy & I just left during lunch on my second day. The dude "training" us would just talk about how much money he spent on partying when he was in our position and how great a time he had all the while telling us to target lonely people, the elderly, and other vulnerable people since they were easier to keep on the line & pressure into buying the crap they sold.

Instead I got a job working 12+ hour night shifts, I was miserable but I didn't have to sell my soul

This company isn't quite that bad it was just the video that my department manager chose to start this call was antithetical to the only good things about this place. Rest of the meeting has been much less soulless.

Imagine I'm there and I'm loudly kissing their dads on the call and bragging about it too.

I used to work for moneyzap.com, and I can tell you this was a big problem there

There's 2 kinds of sales: sales that happen anyway because somebody needs something and, as a salesperson, all you should be doing is making recommendations between variations, and sales that are totally unnecessary and only a result of targeted psychological manipulation and the creation of a false need

there's a third kind. where i'm juicing oranges by smashing them into my orbital bone and don't know there's a better way to do it.

I get what you mean, but I have looooong passed the point where the constant bombardment of "story bull shit" like OP presented, makes me assume everything is story bull shit and ignore it.

You could come at me with the perfect magic juicer machine but I am going to assume its priced 5x more than it should be, works like shit in actual use, and will break in a week. I won't even gice you the time of day and will just keep hand juicing my oramges by smashing them into my orbital bone because I know that works.

That's not sales though that's just juicing and/or fetish play

Yeah I try to be the best I can as the first one. It actually pissed me off how they led with that video because it is entirely the opposite of why my customers like me and trust me.

Another part about marketing is seeing the huge sums of money compared to how much goes to you. I saw the numbers for a contract I significantly helped make happen. Yet they still gave me an ultimatum to get relocated or quit. bye

I had a job once where they would round you up in meetings if your sales numbers weren't on par with their targets and during one of those interrogations they literally advised that you build friendship and trust and then slowly hike your rates.

Jesus that's vile. I had a small group chat on Tuesday with that same manager from this meeting, one of their marketing guys, and one of the three sales rep I am the full time assistant/backup for because his sales dropped a tiny bit but mostly because a chain store account of his that brought us a lot of business closed down. They were extremely chill and reasonable about it though, and basically just wanted to look at some of the discounts we were still giving to customers whose had been not purchasing as much as in the past.

Basically they wanted to slightly lower their admittedly pretty fat discount for how little volume they were pulling from us, and offer small increase in discounts for our bigger clients. They talked a lot about rapport building and trust too, but only in the context of being able to better serve them and their business in a more mutually beneficial way.

I'm always happy to help boost sales especially when I know my customers and what kind of stuff moves well for them and in general based on market trends. Like "hey this third party vendor product is offering us a big manufacturing discount, I can give an extra x off on this product right now if you want to bump up y product that is blowing up on tiktok right now" or like, "hey this is out of stock from this vendor and has been for a while, would you like to try this one that we manufacture on site? You will get a much better profit margin since you're buying it direct and I'll even give you half a case for half price and a free sample of your choice if you want to bring in any of our items you don't yet carry." And customers love that shit.

So yeah real mixed bag, but there is a side of the job that actually is rewarding despite being in the belly of the beast of a massive corporation.

They are also very clear about protecting their very large portion of immigrants and folks with checkered pasts from the feds and cops. Hell one of the women in my office is rad as fuck and a comrade who literally has a warrant for her arrest for some bullshit in socal and they still gave her a job knowing this, which is actually unironically pretty based for a company like this.

Every day I'm happy I don't work in sales or marketing.
