This greaseball wants to sell out trans people, not understanding that the reactionaries will just move on to the next target.

But you can't expect a liberal centrist to understand solidarity. I want him to lose the gubernatorial primary so fucking much.

[-] Bustedknuckles@lemmy.world 26 points 1 month ago

Presidential primary? He's already governor but term limited. Fortunately, the more people see him and not his social media team, the greasier he's revealed to be

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 20 points 1 month ago

When I saw him the first time I thought it was a scene from American Psycho

[-] Zombiepirate@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Ah, right. I guess we'll have to flush him nationally now.

IMO, a California politician would face an uphill battle in the general anyway.

Republicans have spent so long demonizing California as a place full of communists and corruption that any politician associated with California is going to be viewed with intense suspicion by the (unfortunately all-important) flyover states.

Now, to be clear, fuck those ignorant assholes. But we do kind of need their votes, regardless. And it would be a mistake to run a candidate in the general election who has this disadvantage in swaying them.

[-] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

The funny thing is newsom is so far removed from being any of those things Republicans paint California Dems as.

I suspect he understands fully how appeasement works and just doesn't care

[-] cecilkorik@piefed.ca 9 points 1 month ago

Yes, I think he likes it that way. The status quo is the goal. He's not actually progressive at all, he just wears a progressive mask when he needs to, so it gets him votes.

He's portrayed as satan to the people he's trying to meet half way

This is a guy who does not understand the current media landscape and will Keir Starmer himself into being Donald Trump Lite. He is a political dead end that will inevitably reinforce fascism.

[-] _druid@sh.itjust.works 27 points 1 month ago

Ratchet effect enabling corporate puppet.

[-] Wytch@lemmy.zip 27 points 1 month ago

"More culturally normal" = white

[-] Assassassin@lemmy.dbzer0.com 17 points 1 month ago

Don't forget straight and cis

[-] _chris@lemmy.world 23 points 1 month ago

Yeah, that’s not the problem.

[-] Lemming6969@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

How did the other side get so many votes being extremely culturally abnormal? The claim makes no sense.

[-] VitoRobles@lemmy.today 20 points 1 month ago

Remember when Bernie Sanders called out Newsom for being part of the big business class?

He's a classic D.

[-] Sgt_choke_n_stroke@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

Jesus he's really leaning into being blue maga

[-] njm1314@lemmy.world 16 points 1 month ago

Im honestly not sure how he is different from Mitt Romney. They might be the same person.

[-] KelvarCherry@lemmy.blahaj.zone 2 points 1 month ago

and Biden was a neocon. The scale shifts ever rightward.

[-] blockheadjt@sh.itjust.works 1 points 1 month ago

He looks a little less clueless

[-] BlameTheAntifa@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

Does he, though?

I think not.

[-] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 15 points 1 month ago

~~Homeless~~

~~Trans people~~

He's really going all in on the "no matter what" part

[-] EndlessNightmare@reddthat.com 13 points 1 month ago

things that really matter (0:18)

Like opposing genocide? I'd consider that something that really matters.

[-] hector@lemmy.today 13 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Yes, the American people really want to be ass fucked by corporate america without their consent. It's the fault of those arguing there needs to be consent that America rejected our candidate, someone that never breached 30% approval all term, didn't win a single state in the prior primary, and wasn't offering any popular reform in her campaign.

It must have been bigotry, which somehow then exonerates us from anointing a candidate that couldn't win.

Win some lose some, the important thing is the rich don't have to unsteal your lunch and can continue to steal your homes while they are at it. It's not like the other party is openly planning on fixing elections. Oh they are? Well I'm sure it's just performative, and they won't follow through. I mean it's not like they would dare to indict likely front runners and establishment types in 2027 in the fall for false election rigging charges. /s

This is all too stupid to satirize at this point. People still trust them to lead the resistance somehow though.

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

You say that but I present the DNC 2028 counter to every argument you might have

[-] hector@lemmy.today 1 points 1 month ago

Except lady liberty should be tied to the tracks.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 12 points 1 month ago

Well, he's close to saying they need to focus on universal material issues more than leaning into identity politics, which I agree with, but I don't think that's quite what he's going for. Focusing on universal material issues does not mean throwing this or that marginalized group under the bus and he's already run over some people.

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

He is doing the classic Liberal doublespeak.

He starts off by saying Democrats should not focus on identity politics. But then right after it he says that Democrats should adopt his version of identity politics to solve the issue instead of not letting it be the focus.

[-] Zaktor@sopuli.xyz 6 points 1 month ago

When centrists say "focus on kitchen table issues" they don't actually mean focus on universal material issues. It's just a cudgel to try to crack the left and make them think nothing should be done on anything. Most of his vetoes have been against straightforward material concerns, not mandating trans flags on paper straws.

[-] avidamoeba@lemmy.ca 4 points 1 month ago

Most of his vetoes have been against straightforward material concerns, not mandating trans flags on paper straws.

This is the most damning part against giving him the benefit of the doubt.

The palestinians in 2024, trans people in 2028. And you'll have people crying about harm reduction in 2030 blaming leftists for telling others not to vote for the double genocide party.

[-] danh2os@piefed.social 12 points 1 month ago

I stopped listening to this man when he told everyone to stay home during Covid and happily went out to dinner with his rich friends.

[-] 100_kg_90_de_belin@feddit.it 12 points 1 month ago

Or when he flexed demolishing homeless camps

[-] rustyfemboy@lemmy.blahaj.zone 9 points 1 month ago

I'm sure that the genocide the US armed and funded had nothing to do with it.

[-] SwingingTheLamp@piefed.zip 9 points 1 month ago

Holy heck. The Voyager app autoplays video with the sound muted, but his facial expresssions and body language are slimy and supercilious.

[-] londos@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

The hand move at 0:26 feels offensive

[-] IndustryStandard@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

He is doing Genjutsu hand signs

[-] Snapz@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago

Charliekirk and billionaires aren't normal, Gavin. Stick to trolling trump and then drop out of the primary.

[-] LMurch 4 points 1 month ago

I would vote for Newsome over Trump, Vance, or Rubio, but please not Newsome. He's not progressive.

[-] astropenguin5@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Eh, tbh I might just not vote. I also hate people saying this this early on, it can give him and the establishment the idea that people will just support whatever dogshit corpo Dem they shove at us. There has to be a line somewhere, and he's damn near it.

We still have a whole ass primary season to go, and we have to make damn sure they know that people hate newsom.

[-] Wataba@sh.itjust.works -2 points 1 month ago

How'd that go in Late 2024?

Have enough Venezuelans died yet?

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

At least you got the genocidal shit you wanted either way.

[-] BrainInABox@lemmy.ml 3 points 1 month ago

Don't pretend you care about a hundred dead Venezuelans when you supported the slaughter of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians.

Dems stopped reading 5 words in. Why you all so eager to bend the knee and do whatever the party asks of you??

[-] agent_nycto@lemmy.world 4 points 1 month ago

They don't even talk about that stuff as much, it's conservatives claiming they do that got it into everyone's heads that Dems go on and on about trans people.

[-] desmosthenes@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I mean he’s technically not wrong, half the country still looks back, not forward :/

[-] null@lemmy.org -2 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

What he's saying isn't wrong. Republicans are very good at identifying a wedge issue then pinning it onto Democrats. Gavin is saying Democrats shouldn't take the bait so easily, allowing Republicans to dictate the terms of discourse. Which is absolutely true.

But the solution isn't to just abandon trans people, women, immigrants, Palestinians, Ukrainians, or any other targeted community used as ammunition in a political fight.

[-] Ensign_Crab@lemmy.world 6 points 1 month ago

It's centrists' solution.
