Gonna be weird when she stabs herself and the audience also hears a gunshot.

[-] Tedesche@lemmy.world 25 points 4 days ago

And then, instead of committing co-suicide, an icicle flies in from stage-right and pierces Romeo through the heart.

Tybalt getting Renzokuken'ed would make that duel so much more interesting

[-] VerilyFemme@lemmy.blahaj.zone 57 points 4 days ago

If that play is Romeo and Juliet with Final Fantasy line delivery, I am so in.

[-] pinball_wizard@lemmy.zip 20 points 3 days ago

Lol. Yes.

And half of Romeo's responses are just "...".

[-] sem@piefed.blahaj.zone 35 points 3 days ago

The Shakespeare font really sells it.

[-] Cikos@lemmy.world 29 points 4 days ago

ff8, subjectively the best ff in the series.

[-] cobysev@lemmy.world 21 points 4 days ago

That was the first Final Fantasy game I played all the way through. And the first one I owned. It will always hold a special place in my heart.

Note: I was a teenager when that game released, and I related hard to Squall's emo attitude toward everyone and everything. I thought he was so cool. Replaying it as an adult though, I cringe every time Squall has to interact with anyone. He's basically a whiny baby who only has friends because a bunch of people decide to ignore his antisocial tendencies and indulge his emo behavior. Nobody would tolerate him in real life. Why did I like this character?!

[-] 3rdXthecharm@lemmy.ml 6 points 4 days ago

I think you misremember being a teenager. As my moody attitude swings would deter all but a select few friends who understood I was going through something.

That, and Squall et al. are child soldiers, kind of depressing business for teenagers

[-] Frigidlollipop@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

Reading your take on Squall is hilarious because I experienced the same thing. As a kid he was the coolest thing ever. Replayed the game as an adult and was like ??? This guy can kick rocks with the way he treats people lol. There is one conversation (on Balamb Garden, I think) where some older person is telling him they remind him of their son or something similar, and he straight up tunes them out as they are talking with his thoughts relaying how little he cares lol.

[-] dustyvagina@lemmy.zip 3 points 3 days ago

This was the first game I pirated for my modded psx

[-] MinisterOSW@lemmy.world 6 points 3 days ago

Also the soundtrack is one of the best in the series.

[-] rustydrd@sh.itjust.works 5 points 3 days ago

Triple Triad alone is reason enough people should appreciate FF8.

[-] DamienGramatacus@lemmy.world 6 points 4 days ago

I would love a proper remake of FF8!

[-] skooma_king@piefed.social 7 points 4 days ago

I’m skeptical they could do a proper remake. The FF7 remakes, while they do have some fun bits and highlights, are so unbearably silly they were an absolute slog to get through. And, maybe this is me going old, the combat system is so flashy I can’t tell what’s going on half the time.

[-] Derpenheim@lemmy.zip 7 points 3 days ago

The amount of times sephiroth is just dangled in front of you pissed me off. Not 10 minutes in its like "ooooohhhh here's scary sword boy, look at him!!!!"

[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 3 points 3 days ago

God I hated that so much. Im getting angry just thinking about it. The pacing in the original game to introduce him was what made him such a legendary bad guy, especially thinking Shinra is the main thing in the game, and then, oh, wait, nope, who tf is this guy? Oh, he's an evil piece of crap, got it.

Nope, end of the first remake game, not even 5 hours of the original story, here's the main villain in the game as the final boss. Ruined the whole thing for me.

It's the one that needs it the most, because it has many problems that are entirely fixable.

[-] VindictiveJudge@lemmy.world 5 points 4 days ago

I liked the plot, but the gameplay was in desperate need of an overhaul.

Also, if you're trying to explore and finish up side quests on disc 3, but you accidentally clip Lunatic Pandora on the world map, it puts you into a linear sequence that runs all the way through to the end of disc 4 and the game with no 'press X to enter this location' prompt or warning that this is a point of no return.

But I did really like the story. If anyone has a mod suggestion for something that makes the junction system not be absurdly broken I'd be interested.

That is quite a hot take. It is my least favorite in the series after 13.

[-] otp@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Yeah, and I prefer 13 to 8.

2 is down there with them though

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 3 days ago

For years I thought the same of 2, but now I think that was likely partially due to the frustration of playing a roughly translated NES ROM back in the day. The re-released version from a few years ago was actually pretty enjoyable with the exception of the final dungeon being filled with instant death enemies.

[-] otp@sh.itjust.works 2 points 2 days ago

I have to wonder how many QoL changes the re-release has. When I rank the FFs, I only consider the original versions.

[-] zod000@lemmy.dbzer0.com 2 points 2 days ago

Oh it has plenty as did the other early versions of the games in the "pixel" remasters. As much as I loved the original FF when it was new, it is hard to play through it now without the QoL changes from the later releases. I just wish they hadn't scaled the difficulty down so much.

I thought ff8 magic system was tedious. It really turned me off the game.

[-] ZombiFrancis@sh.itjust.works 1 points 3 days ago

Who needs magic when you can triple triad your game into a broken mess right out the gate.

This was an intentional reference to Final Fantasy VIII and PlayStation iconography.

[-] NocturnalMorning@lemmy.world 15 points 3 days ago

What? No way? Doesn't ring a bell..

I think it's one of these bad boys

[-] Wilco@lemmy.zip 11 points 3 days ago

I like the theater logo in the corner mimicking the box design.

[-] DupaCycki@lemmy.world 7 points 3 days ago

I guess you could say Romeo and Juliet is the final fantasy for some people.

I wonder how they did that part where Romeo and Juliet get stuck in a spaceship and fight weird aliens.

[-] MJKee9@lemmy.world 10 points 3 days ago

Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery.

I love how they took the time to translate the title to Japanese as well!

[-] puppinstuff@lemmy.ca 4 points 3 days ago

Takes me back to the Square Gamer forum I used to volunteer on. If any of you are still out there, that was a really fun and silly time of teenage life I enjoyed with you.

At worst, AI assisted, the overall photo adds up as this is clearly at UMass and the words on the posters make sense. As for the poster in question, to imagine a college student into the fine arts being willing to boot up a student copy of Illustrator to make that background graphic and text isn't very far fetched, though. It's just sloppy enough that I can believe it's not AI (I did similar posters 18 years ago in college, lol).

Only real verification is from the source, though. Lord knows every other FF music channel on YouTube uses AI slop FF titles.

[-] Ulrich@feddit.org 1 points 3 days ago

You can generate the image and then add the text...

[-] taiyang@lemmy.world 2 points 3 days ago

That's why I said AI assisted. The text is top notch human.
