I have Evasion, so uhhh... Yup, zero damage.

[–] [email protected] 33 points 10 months ago (1 children)

DC 20 isn't even hard considering the effect it's supposed to have.

Level 7 rogue that just got Evasion has a +3 proficiency and could have 20 dex, so succeeds for ZERO damage on a 12, and never takes full.

I think the scroll should've split between Force and Fire damage. Make the Force damage a CON save for half, because you can't avoid it, only tank it, and make the fire the dex save.

Then rogues still get to use Evasion, but it's not "I anime dodge the comet".

[–] [email protected] 24 points 10 months ago (2 children)

Eh. If the wizard can conjure it, the rogue should be able to dodge it.

I know it makes my GM twitch whenever my rogue or monk would dodge an explosion. But we have to disillusion ourselves of the ridiculous notion that martial characters have to obey the laws of physics.

But we have to disillusion ourselves of the ridiculous notion that martial characters have to obey the laws of physics.

With the amount of damage that martial characters can tank or dish out, I think the only explanation is that martials use magic as well, just not the conscious brainy kind. There must be some subconscious muscle magic going on that bends reality in a more subtle and localised way.

No topic has ever gotten me into more D&D arguments than saying that a 10th level fighter should be able to fall off an airship, hit the ground and not immediately splat, but rather limp away from it after tanking the 20d6 damage.

I want a squad of Dwarven Fighters to be able to leap off of the same airship and do a three-point landing, because what the hell would Dwarves need parachutes for?!

[–] [email protected] 7 points 10 months ago

SUPERHERO LANDING!

It's so hard on the knees....

Hide in a fridge.

[–] [email protected] 40 points 10 months ago (1 children)

The description says it hits the ground, so all you have to do is jump at the exact right time.

This guy plays Monster Hunter.

Using the asteroid impact calculator at https://apps.science.purdue.edu/eaps/crater/cgi/crater_c.cgi, a crater of this size is equal to approximately 7 kilotonnes, which is light tactical nuclear weapon level. Large enough to vaporise city blocks, refrigerators, and any rogues evading into said refrigerators

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago (2 children)

oh but it doesn't work if you're inside apparently

[–] [email protected] 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You have to see the ~~sky~~ comet to manipulate the comet, isn't that right? You can't just have wizards willy-nilly affecting matter that they can't perceive!

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

And don't even think about using windows! The devil's doorways, they are

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

Makes sense. Who's gonna guide the comet down, imaginary sky friends?

[–] [email protected] 36 points 10 months ago (1 children)

You can't dodge all the damage with most builds, but the damage is actually spread out over a short duration and you can use the i-frames in dodge to negate some of it.

[–] [email protected] 6 points 10 months ago

Fast rolling helps.

[–] [email protected] 21 points 10 months ago (1 children)

It clearly states you still take damage if you pass, an almost certainly fatal amount. Basically your character hides in a fridge or something like Indiana Jones.

[–] [email protected] 17 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Improved Evasion. You take no damage if successful, and 50% on a failed DEX check. Utterly broken, especially when the Wizard realizes that their pseudodragon familiar is why they can suddenly dodge better than the rogue, though I think the pseudodragon was actually casting dimension door or something.

That's how it worked in 3.0/3.5, not sure if that holds true in 5th e.

Ah, the golden era 🤘🏼🌈

This is the only thing I know about this game and I cannot wait for it to come out

[–] [email protected] 16 points 10 months ago (1 children)

hey, if you're not bothered by 15d10 dmg, i am impressed

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago)

That's only like 82.5 damage, I'm fine

Nah, that blood was there before I coughed

[–] [email protected] 15 points 10 months ago

Is it a real speed comet or an anime speed comet ?

[–] [email protected] 15 points 10 months ago (1 children)

15d10 damage on a successful save is still an average of 82.5 damage, or enough to kill a peasant 20.5 times over. I presume the Dex save is being able to find a relatively safe crevasse or something—the key word being "relative", since they'll still take enough damage to kill a rhino twice.

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Using commoners to see how damaging a spell is is like using a cat to test out an anti-vehicle mine designed to explode on any contact and weight.

[–] [email protected] 14 points 10 months ago (2 children)

What is a comet that can only deal up to 300 damage. Laughable.

[–] [email protected] 8 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Honestly, a pretty good answer is that if the lower damage bound is 30, the "comet" just isn't that big really.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

Lower bound is actually 15 on successful saving throw.

[–] [email protected] 4 points 10 months ago

I've never seen a PC with more than 200hp

[–] [email protected] 14 points 10 months ago

Anime dodge and hang in the air for 35 seconds. Ez

[–] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago (1 children)
[–] [email protected] 5 points 10 months ago

Just have to dodge roll at the right time. Easy.

[–] [email protected] 12 points 10 months ago

Don't forget that rogues get that perk (level 10 I think?) where they always get half damage whenever it calls for a DEX save and zero damage if they succeed

[–] [email protected] 11 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

It's like jumping out of a car at highway speeds vs. jumping out of a car at highway speeds, tucking, and rolling. Either way, you'll be seriously hurt or killed, but one way is a little more likely to seriously hurt you and a little less likely to kill you than the other.

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago (1 children)

Also it's a world where one bardy boi singing real good has significant real life effects.

Why shouldn't someone be so good at dodging that they can evade half of the damage an explosion does?

Duh. You jump into the air and ride the air currents to safety. Everyone knows comets crashing creates waves of wind due to the displacement.

[–] [email protected] 10 points 10 months ago

Probably to hide under a desk... I wonder if bringing your own gives you advantage on the roll?

This is leaving out that a mile away from an impact that creates a 50-foot crater is in no way safe. Anyone know someone who could do the math on this?

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago* (last edited 10 months ago) (1 children)

Did it in a top level comment. Not sure how to link to it in an instance-independent manner

[–] [email protected] 2 points 10 months ago

That calculator is going to provide me with hours of ghoulish fun, thanks!
