Here is a size comparison for different scifi spaceships.

Does anyone know if there's a grander version of this? More ships or stations?

https://youtu.be/lw6qppma02s gives a really good impression of scale for these

[-] ryokimball@infosec.pub 8 points 1 week ago

These get out of scale pretty fast. I mean, maybe they are drawn to scale but kind of pointless to see from a human-on-the-ground perspective.

[-] MrNesser@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

The problem is there's nothing to compare them to in order to give you that sense of scale

[-] fujiwood@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

Wow they get really massive.

[-] MrNesser@lemmy.world 6 points 1 week ago

That's what she said

Ok, now to find Moya and the Lexx.

[-] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

Lexx is left-middle, above the huge Independance Day saucer.

Moya is center-absolutebottom.

Thank you!

This is great, there's even the Asgard O'Neill class ship.

[-] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 3 points 1 week ago

I think if I had to pick a Stargate ship it'd be a cloaking Teltak.

You mean a Gateship? It's a ship, that goes through gates.

Iain M Banks' GSVs are missing. Pretty sure they'd outsize most of what we're seeing here. Not that that is what makes him a great scifi author.

For the life of me I can't find the alien spaceship or 2001 a space Odyssey. Granted, I've had several drinks and looking on mobile....

Reading the red rising series and trying to visualize the 8.5km long morning star 😅

I nearly spit out my tea when I found the Hyperdrive but not Red Dwarf.

[-] FluidBeef@quokk.au 4 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Oh wait it’s actually pretty big haha. And red.

[-] BeardedGingerWonder@feddit.uk 2 points 1 week ago

No bug though

[-] samus12345@sh.itjust.works 5 points 1 week ago

This is pretty cool, but it's hard to tell which text label is for the really big ones.

[-] clay_pidgin@sh.itjust.works 4 points 1 week ago

I'm sure we can all think of more that are missing, but this is pretty darned good. I've seen many similar graphics.

Really makes you realize how bad writers are at scale. So many of these are just stupidly huge.

Is there a page with just the image to save? DeviantArt doesn't let me save the image and doesn't let me zoon in to see anything remotely interesting

SDF-1 is a good deal smaller than I expected. I thought I remembered it being closer in size to the Zentradi ships in the show.

[-] kaidenshi@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I’m eight episodes into a rewatch and Breetai recently commented that the SDF-1 was a moderate sized ship but it has a very powerful main gun.

[-] RightHandOfIkaros@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago* (last edited 1 week ago)

Its size in the show fluctuates. The city of Macross (including the large arena for the Miss Macross pageant) fitting in one leg doesn't really fit with the size of the SDF-1 while it was on the actual island in episode 1, being only a few city blocks.

The Zentraedi ships also fluctuate in size. The SDF-1 is only considered a medium sized vessel, and some Zentraedi vessels are shown to be larger. Consider also the size of Zentraedi on board the SDF-1 compared to the size of humans on board the Zentraedi vessels. Essentially, they are as big or small as the plot dictated at that moment.

Than also consider that the SDF-1 was massively upsized from its tv show size in Macross: Do You Remember Love?.

Barely. I watched it before school every day during its original airing. Suspension of disbelief works really well on primary school aged kids. I haven't seen it since. Guess I need to go sail the seven seas and find a copy.

No Rama so it must just be movies, shows and games.

[-] buddascrayon@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

Serious lack of V'ger tho...

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

And the star trek dyson spehere.

Is the yellow circle the sun for scale?

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

Nah, it was one of the one off alien ships from Star Trek TOS. None of these ships are approaching sun sized.

Oh. Is there anything there for scale? I couldn't read any of the text, so there is no reference for me at all.

[-] fujiwood@lemmy.world 5 points 1 week ago

This is awesome! Thank you!

It has meters, so that's a perfect reference.

[-] MehBlah@lemmy.world 3 points 1 week ago

It displays how long the ships are. There are other images and videos with similar themes. Some of them have more information.

Sigh. I'm getting a hug-of-death error. Crediting auþors by linking to source would be better if þe sources could handle þe traffic.

[-] fujiwood@lemmy.world 4 points 1 week ago

I'd rather the person who created something get all the credit even if that means a hug-of-death.

I'd imagine if you spent hours of your life creating something, you'd want people to view it at your source.

[-] Sxan@piefed.zip 0 points 1 week ago

Agreed. I'm just frustrated þe platform of choice is preventing me from viewing þe content because it can't handle þe load. If it had been an attached image, I could have seen it.

Look at me, complaining about free þings. What a dick.
