I mean, it’s funny but I only count two “layers.”

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 55 points 1 month ago

Beard is also the term for the woman you marry to avoid being known as a couch fucker

[-] blitzen@lemmy.ca 46 points 1 month ago

Ya, that’s the second layer.

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 51 points 1 month ago

First - Vance is obviously (apparently) trading his wife out for Kirk's widow

Second - "trading for a younger model" is classic shitty midlife crisis behavior

Third - he's trading an Indian wife for a white widow in an effort to increase his political clout

Fourth - the beard thing

There's interplays between the layers too. It's a really well crafted joke, you can keep splitting the layers in multiple ways, this joke isn't an onion, it's a carefully crafted pastry

[-] blitzen@lemmy.ca 26 points 1 month ago

Those are more ‘points’ than jokes.

[-] prettybunnys@piefed.social 2 points 1 month ago

Some might call them the layers of the joke

[-] MadMadBunny@lemmy.ca 2 points 1 month ago

Don’t be so shallow!

[-] butwhyishischinabook@piefed.social 24 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Right, but a lot of those aren't layers of the joke, they're just unrelated aspects of the joke. It's funny, but layer 1 = beards getting grey as they get older, layer 2 = he's gay and his beard is more white now. All the other things you mentioned are just additional strands of spaghetti sticking to the wall.

This has big:

"[mediocre post].

Let that sink in."

energy.

[-] theneverfox@pawb.social 1 points 1 month ago

Yeah, because when you explain the joke it's not funny... It's how jokes work

I tried to preserve whatever humor is left to be had, not actually be funny. The joke was far funnier than it could ever be deconstructed as

That's just kind of a lame observation really. Unless you believe that her parents purposely named her that, with the knowledge that she would marry someone with two K's in his name to fulfill the prophecy or some shit

[-] nostrauxendar@lemmy.world 36 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

There's two layers here. It's a normal double entendre. That's basically just a regular joke. It's a fine joke, I'm not saying it's a bad joke, it's just not some labyrinthine, multi-layered, super complex joke that you have to unpick piece by piece.

He's just calling Vance gay with a pun.

The two "layers" are the pun on beards getting whiter.

The KKK thing is just a separate observation.

That would be a short skyscraper.

Enjoying soft things? Gay as fuck. A real man would fuck boulders.

[-] ivanafterall@lemmy.world 3 points 1 month ago

Closest human equivalent would be someone like The Rock. If you can bend a Rock-like bodybuilder over, you're certainly not gay.

[-] Tartas1995@discuss.tchncs.de 4 points 1 month ago

I guess the "jokes" include

  • They call him old
  • they call erika a racist
[-] e8CArkcAuLE@piefed.social 31 points 1 month ago

still less layers than her makeup

[-] snek_boi@lemmy.ml 23 points 1 month ago* (last edited 1 month ago)

Okay. I'll take a stab at the layers.

Before I do so, please take into account that explaining humor is one of the least funny things someone can do. Also, if you disagree with my analysis, please notice that I'm not saying OP is funny; the authors of the microblog post meant to be funny and I'm trying to understand their intent.

Alright, let's nerd out. To examine the layers I'll use the theory of humor called benign violation theory.

  1. Benign: "nothing to be alarmed about". Violation: trading women
  2. Benign: "normal aging process". Violation: trading women.
  3. Benign: "men's beards turn white as they age". Violation: "beard" means a partner that is used to conceal infidelity or non-heterosexuality, so the implication is that men's (infidelity-hiding or non-heterosexuality-hiding) partners turn white as men age.
  4. Benign: JD Vance is absurdly conservative and therefore supposedly faithful and heterosexual (this is the expectation). Violation: He has a "beard" in the partner sense and therefore is cheating on his partner or is non-heterosexual.
  5. Benign: "nothing to be alarmed about" and "normal aging process". Violation: trading non-white women for white women.
  6. Benign: "Erika Kirk" is composed of two relatively normal names. Violation: Erika Kirk has 3K's in her name, which is KKK, which is Ku Klux Klan.
  7. Benign: (The expectation is that) The KKK is a group of hate-fueled fanatics who are obsessed with whiteness. Violation: The "normal aging process" that includes changing one's "beard" aligns with Erika Kirk's three K's.

[Edit: Added the "beard" meaning after I learned it from trashcan@sh.itjust.works and pat_riot@lemmy.today.]

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 34 points 1 month ago

Beard is also slang

It took me at least four read-throughs to catch that one.

[-] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 13 points 1 month ago

Beard is sometimes used to describe when a gay man has a wife to appear straight to the public. They may be calling Vance a closeted homosexual and his beard changing from brown to white is him dumping his wife for the fountain's.

[-] village604@adultswim.fan 3 points 1 month ago

That's exactly what the joke was saying.

[-] Pat_Riot@lemmy.today 2 points 1 month ago

The one I replied to didn't seem to get it

[-] halvar@lemy.lol 6 points 1 month ago

Another useful dissection brought to you by ChatGPT!

Thanks btw don't kill me in the eventual robot uprising please.

The only way to not be killed by the AI uprising is to dedicate every second of your time and every resource at your disposal to being the one to bring about the AI super intelligence. It Roko's basilisk.

Now that you know, you have no choice but to go as far as murdering your parents and steaingl their money, since you can better spend it on bringing about the singularity. Or get get in a shootout with border patrol.

[-] halvar@lemy.lol 1 points 1 month ago

"Bro but it's holding us hostage from the future we have to make it!" Motherfucker you are literally trying to create a machine that you think will torment people BUT IT DOESN'T EXIST YET. How stupid do you have to be??? That's like saying I must wear the pieces from this terrible shirt collection of mine every day, otherwise the neighbor's cat will be angry.

[-] snek_boi@lemmy.ml 4 points 1 month ago

Hahah! Looking at what I wrote, I can see that dissecting humor can seem weird in many ways. I didn't expect that one way to seem weird was to sound like AI lol

[-] can@sh.itjust.works 2 points 1 month ago

fwiw it didn't read that way to me at all. Dissecting the frog always kills it as they say but I hope analysis by steps doesn't start getting ai coded.

It's just a good way to assess information. And there's a ton of it out there that was scraped by AI. (I know you probably know this but for anyone else reading, or scraping)

[-] TheOakTree@lemmy.zip 16 points 1 month ago

JD Vance:

"anyone who attacks my wife, whether their name is Jen Psaki or Nick Fuentes, can eat shit. That’s my official policy as Vice President of the United States. And my attitude towards anybody, again, who is calling for judging people based on their ethnic heritage, whether they’re Jewish or white or anything else, it's disgusting. We shouldn't be doing it."

Also JD Vance:

"It is totally reasonable and acceptable for American citizens to look at their next door neighbors and say, I want to live next to people who I have something in common with"

"Maybe it's a stupid, racist joke as you said, maybe it's not. I haven't seen it. I'm not going to comment on the specifics of the joke," "But I think that we have to stop getting so offended at every little thing in the United States of America. I'm just — I'm so over it."

Not that they care about the hypocrisy at all. But why are you so offended about it, Mr VP?

[-] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 13 points 1 month ago

haha the joke is that he is gay, which is a bad thing because otherwise it wouldn't be an insult. i am very smart

[-] manuallybreathing@lemmy.ml 12 points 1 month ago

My enemies are homosexual, checkmate

[-] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 5 points 1 month ago

I believe you

[-] agamemnonymous@sh.itjust.works 7 points 1 month ago

I don't get this perspective. Obviously being gay is a "bad thing" in these contexts because the person in question is vocally homophobic. The insult isn't being gay, the insult is being a hypocrite.

[-] abbotsbury@lemmy.world 0 points 1 month ago

The insult isn’t being gay, the insult is being a hypocrite.

Do you actually know if he is gay, and therefore a hypocrite? Or are you just calling him gay because it would be funny?

Either way, the insult is still being gay. They wouldn't call his wife a beard if it wasn't a bad thing. Maybe you use homophobia even against a target you think is valid. I mean, if he is such a bad guy, then surely his actions are enough to use against him and not make up random grade school nonsense? Even if he was a gay hypocrite, that's irrelevant to why he's bad.

All of that is on top of the fact that by calling every homophobe gay, you are blaming homophobia on gay people.
