Second - "trading for a younger model" is classic shitty midlife crisis behavior
Third - he's trading an Indian wife for a white widow in an effort to increase his political clout

There's interplays between the layers too. It's a really well crafted joke, you can keep splitting the layers in multiple ways, this joke isn't an onion, it's a carefully crafted pastry

Right, but a lot of those aren't layers of the joke, they're just unrelated aspects of the joke. It's funny, but layer 1 = beards getting grey as they get older, layer 2 = he's gay and his beard is more white now. All the other things you mentioned are just additional strands of spaghetti sticking to the wall.

There's two layers here. It's a normal double entendre. That's basically just a regular joke. It's a fine joke, I'm not saying it's a bad joke, it's just not some labyrinthine, multi-layered, super complex joke that you have to unpick piece by piece.
He's just calling Vance gay with a pun.
The two "layers" are the pun on beards getting whiter.
The KKK thing is just a separate observation.

Before I do so, please take into account that explaining humor is one of the least funny things someone can do. Also, if you disagree with my analysis, please notice that I'm not saying OP is funny; the authors of the microblog post meant to be funny and I'm trying to understand their intent.
Alright, let's nerd out. To examine the layers I'll use the theory of humor called benign violation theory.
- Benign: "nothing to be alarmed about". Violation: trading women
- Benign: "normal aging process". Violation: trading women.
- Benign: "men's beards turn white as they age". Violation: "beard" means a partner that is used to conceal infidelity or non-heterosexuality, so the implication is that men's (infidelity-hiding or non-heterosexuality-hiding) partners turn white as men age.
- Benign: JD Vance is absurdly conservative and therefore supposedly faithful and heterosexual (this is the expectation). Violation: He has a "beard" in the partner sense and therefore is cheating on his partner or is non-heterosexual.
- Benign: "nothing to be alarmed about" and "normal aging process". Violation: trading non-white women for white women.
- Benign: "Erika Kirk" is composed of two relatively normal names. Violation: Erika Kirk has 3K's in her name, which is KKK, which is Ku Klux Klan.
- Benign: (The expectation is that) The KKK is a group of hate-fueled fanatics who are obsessed with whiteness. Violation: The "normal aging process" that includes changing one's "beard" aligns with Erika Kirk's three K's.

It took me at least four read-throughs to catch that one.
Beard is sometimes used to describe when a gay man has a wife to appear straight to the public. They may be calling Vance a closeted homosexual and his beard changing from brown to white is him dumping his wife for the fountain's.
That's exactly what the joke was saying.

fwiw it didn't read that way to me at all. Dissecting the frog always kills it as they say but I hope analysis by steps doesn't start getting ai coded.

I don't get this perspective. Obviously being gay is a "bad thing" in these contexts because the person in question is vocally homophobic. The insult isn't being gay, the insult is being a hypocrite.

Either way, the insult is still being gay. They wouldn't call his wife a beard if it wasn't a bad thing. Maybe you use homophobia even against a target you think is valid. I mean, if he is such a bad guy, then surely his actions are enough to use against him and not make up random grade school nonsense? Even if he was a gay hypocrite, that's irrelevant to why he's bad.
All of that is on top of the fact that by calling every homophobe gay, you are blaming homophobia on gay people.
