Hey! How do you pronounce AUR? (piefed.zeromedia.vip)

In reference to the Arch User Repository, do you say Ore? Arr? Our? Do you say A U R? Or do you just say the full Arch User Repository?

I pronounce it "AUR" of course.

Ay Yew Arr

...but if they renamed it Arch Interactive User Repository or Arch Internet User Repository, I have no problem switching to pronouncing it "eye-urr"

I hear an ancient voice, whispering from the Void, and it chills my lightless heart

Sometimes I forget I have a video game tattoo lmao

Arr.

I just enjoy feeling like a pirate at any opportunity.

Exactly. Imagine intentionally turning down the opportunity to Arrrrr at people.

I pronounce it AUR btw.

(In all seriousness I pronounce it like Aura without the 2nd A)

Like "aurum" without the "um."

A-U-R for me, personally.

A U R. It rolls off the tongue pretty easily.

coming from a language with consistent pronunciation I pronounce it "aur" like other comments said, like "aurum" or like in Portuguese - how it is written)

In Dutch, au is a fixed diphthong that's part of many of our normal words. /ʌu/... approximately. So that's how I pronounce it... in my head. I don't think I've ever really had reason to say it out loud.

[-] lagoon8622@sh.itjust.works 3 points 4 months ago

reason to say it out loud

But then how do you tell everyone you meet where to find extra packages..? Asking for a friend

[-] superweeniehutjrs@lemmy.world 5 points 4 months ago

Like how the Australians say No

[-] lvxferre@mander.xyz 5 points 4 months ago

English: [ɔ:]. It rhymes with "dinosaur".
Portuguese: [ä'uɾ]. Basically how it's spelled.

[-] 404@lemmy.zip 5 points 4 months ago* (last edited 4 months ago)

In English, Ey-You-Arr.

In Swedish, diphtonged Aw-ur, pretty similar to Our but with a more pronounced aaah sound. A-U-R would be two glottoal stops (Ahh-Uuh-Err) and is pretty uncomfortable to pronounce in Swedish.

I have not been initiated into any of this. I'd pronounce it like "aura" without the a, and a longer R

[-] ulterno@programming.dev 0 points 4 months ago

I'd speak it that way to myself.
But when telling others, I just go with the safer "A.U.R.", because almost every time I am speaking, it is to someone who is hearing it the first time.

Definitely not like OUR (in the sense of owning from community perspective). No seriously, I pronounce it like most do and say each letter on their own like a pirate.

[-] fascicle@leminal.space 2 points 4 months ago

Same way I say arch, but without the ch

[-] tangonov@lemmy.ca 1 points 4 months ago
