If your local town zoning forbids you from building ~~detached accessory buildings~~ accessory dwelling units for having your nephew live in, change the fucking zoning. Community is facilitated by convenience, and living within a stone's throw from loved ones is great way to build community.

That is happening in some places. Accessory dwelling units (the term of art in planning and zoning worlds) are being allowed more and more. Things change slowly in the urban planning and zoning world, though.

The greatest joy that money can't replicate is a big potluck dinner at someone's home with friends. No expectations, no food judgment, just a chance to hang out and not be expected to spend $100 at a restaurant you don't like.

Consider the destruction of OkCupid as an attack against its liberal-skewed user base.

Quora's enshittification has that vibe too.

Yes! I'm not crazy. All the liberal spaces have been slowly disappearing and it feels like they're being taken over every time under the guise of capitalism. I'm not one to call a conspiracy, but...

[-] [email protected] 1 points 2 days ago

You don't need a conspiracy when everybody's working from the same playbook.

Aww, I didn't know that about OKC. I met my wife on there in 2015, married in 2017, and had our first kid in 2019. Of all the dating sites, it was the best for weeding out what I wanted in a partner. I hate capitalism even more now.

It's still better than the alternatives. But it got massively enshittified over the years

[-] [email protected] 10 points 6 days ago

Capitalism is part of it. Spending too much time on the internet and social media is a hell of a lot more of it.

[-] [email protected] 29 points 6 days ago

What exactly am I supposed to do? Capitalism has killed any public spaces where capitalism isnt the primary purpose. This is a societal problem caused by capitalism and cannot be fixed on an individual level.

[-] [email protected] 20 points 6 days ago

Capitalism bastardised the internet to be like this. There was a communal web in the making.

Yeah, but describing the problem as a problem of capitalism makes it sound inescapable and unfixable without a complete overhaul of society.

In reality you just need to get off social media and stop scrolling.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

I believe capitalism is the problem, and should be replaced by a retroactively-estimating value-production reward-system. Only the economy is overhauled, not society.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Yes, but social media is the problem in your life that you can change today. Capitalism is a system that will take, at minimum, years to replace.

I don't use social media (aside from lemmy). I can assure you that the problem is inescapable and unfixable without a complete overhaul of society.

The problem is capitalism.

[-] [email protected] 1 points 3 days ago

I have no issues with human connection, but I am also subject to capitalism.

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Glad to know you have personal experience in every capitalist society on earth. /s

[-] [email protected] 2 points 5 days ago

Is that something someone needs in order to criticize it? Why?

[-] [email protected] 1 points 5 days ago* (last edited 5 days ago)

Because you're making the claim that capitalism inherently leads to loneliness.

If there are capitalist societies that aren't lonely then that would indicate that capitalism does not inherently lead to loneliness, or that there are other factors that can address loneliness that are more powerful than capitalism.

It is by design, but unless you wanna rot in your basement until you expire, it's up to you to defy the pushes of the system to complacency. Going out and making some friends with a common interest immediately improves your life.
