Was talking to an American today and trying to describe some of the issues with size and remoteness we have monitoring/managing projects out bush. Like why we can't just offer bounties to people to round up feral cats in the Pilbara. Mate there's like 4 people out there...

he didn't get it until I told him we have 25mill people and the basically all live in three cities but in a country the size of the US.He went just kinda quiet for a minute and said...oh...we have like 600mill.

Any DT legends been referred to (or know of) a notably on-the-ball internal medicine specialist/general physician that practices privately? They seem kinda hard to find and don't want to end up with a flop, given the price tag, so hoping to consider at least one or two options additional to the one my GP suggested.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 week ago

wtf is 'internal medicine'? Isn't all medicine internal to some degree? Or is this a euphemism? Cos if so I missed the email.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 1 week ago

I have just learnt it is the American version of the term, so naturally it doesn't make sense. I was hoping it would help distinguish "general practitioner" (GP/family doctor) with "general physician" (medical specialist) which are commonly confused, even until recently by myself.

Donโ€™t have any recommendations, but physicians often have areas of special interest, so read to blurb on the ones you find to see which would suit you best.

Has anyone had a positive experience with pet insurance? I'm paying 80 a month and tried to get a claim for a check up covered and they denied it.

It's my first claim on 3 years.

[-] [email protected] 5 points 1 week ago

None of them will cover checkups. They only cover accident/illness (or if you pay extra specifically some cover specific things like vaccination, but you pay more in premiums on that section than they will give you back so it is not a good option to take).

My take on pet insurance is that it is a good option to cover you for big bills if you don't have the savings to cover them yourself up front. My previous dog had about $6k or vet wills in the couple of weeks before she died, I got most of that back. If I didn't have the insurance I would have had to make the decision to put her down instead of having treatment which may have saved her life. If it had worked and they had been able to stabalise her diabetes I would have also had major ongoing costs for insulin etc. which the insurance would have covered.

I've now managed to get my finances much better sorted and have enough savings that I can afford to cover a big vet bill if required so I stopped the insurance, but I dont at all regret having had it in the past. The insurance is not there for the small costs, it's there so when something major happens you have the option of having it treated instead of being forced to have your pet down because you don't have the money.

That makes perfect sense. I'm really sorry to hear about your dog.

It's not a huge cost, but I was a bit iffy that this wasn't covered. Turns out it's an extra level of care in the contract.
