People want to immigrate to the USA still? Bizarre.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 1 day ago

There are still countries even worse than the US.

And I think you're underestimating the strength of an immigrant's will to take risks to attempt to find a better life. Immigrants have suffered far worse throught US History.

I mean, just take a look at Wong Kim Ark. Dude didn't just give up and leave, he stood his ground and fought though it, even though he had no idea if the US would even consider his case seriously.

And many people already have relatives in the US. So these are the risks they are willing to take to reunite. Unlike many westerners, who just completely give up on the slightest obstacles.

(Although I do think the much better option now is the EU, if they don't have any relatives in the US already.)

You can need a visa for tourism.

People want to travel to the USA still? Bizarre.

[-] [email protected] 25 points 2 days ago

This is kind of stupid. I don't even remember social media tags I've used. Who would want to go through this shit to get into redneckville?

[-] [email protected] 6 points 2 days ago

Exactly, they are talking about dozens of names. Who on earth would remember that, let alone want to share it.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

This was explained to me years ago. They don't give a fuck about what you said. They want you to lie, in case they need to fuck you up. If for some reason they want to screw you, they'll look for these uids, and if you hadn't declared, they'll slap perjury charges on you.

Ideologically unaligned visitors need not apply. Got to keep America pure, without the pesky freedom of subversive thought.

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

It's a chance for ~~everyone~~ visitors to practice right think.

While looking for a link, I found links that make me think some folks are trying to unironically reclaim the term "right think". Gross.

Too many people aren't reading 1984 anymore, while billionaires thought it was a "how to" guide.

[-] [email protected] 3 points 2 days ago

Just don't wait to ask Grok what it thinks "Right Think" is, as Musk plans for it to rewrite human knowledge and understanding with a new lens. :')

[-] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago

Good thing I delete that crap 10+ years ago. Enjoy the shitty data and memes!

[-] [email protected] 4 points 2 days ago

Same, but it worries me that now I look like I'm hiding something.

I guess technically I am hiding something: It's disdain. Disdain for shitty social media is what I'm hiding.

[-] [email protected] 164 points 3 days ago

America is such a fucking joke it's no longer funny. I wish we could isolate the rest of the world from your madness but unfortunately we can't.

[-] [email protected] 53 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

Yeah, keeping our shit to ourselves has never really been our strong suit.

Sorry :(

[-] [email protected] 53 points 3 days ago

As a Middle Easterner, I genuinely feel sorry for the non maga Americans, but unfortunately that's your fight to fight.

Good luck.

[-] [email protected] 29 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

And fight we do. I’ve considered myself an activist for almost 30 years now. I thought fighting for marriage equality was gonna be hard. I’m really not looking forward to this.

As a Native American this attitude would be a lot more understandable and palatable if America wasn’t colonized…

[-] [email protected] 20 points 2 days ago

I totally understand your sentiment. Undoubtedly the USA is built on stolen land, much like Israel.

Lol, now even the dumbest asshole should understand that they should cancle their US vacation...

[-] [email protected] 17 points 2 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

I legitimately do not, and have never had, any of the usual social media. This lemm.ee account is the only one I have, and that's closing down soon.

However I would also never visit the us. So it's all a win/win for me.

[-] [email protected] 18 points 2 days ago

I legitimately do not, and have never had, any of the usual social media.

"Well that can't be right. Highly suspicious. What do you have to hide?"

[-] [email protected] 9 points 2 days ago

"What do you have to hide?"

Grizzly murders. Loads of them!!

...
...

J/k. It's my privacy. All those horrific murders were really easy to get away with, keeping my privacy private however...

[-] [email protected] 6 points 1 day ago

I haven't get my #viss, but since last year I was thinking about it. With these news and for what you see from the #USA, there is no way that I'll throw myself into that humilliation

[-] [email protected] 16 points 2 days ago

Well, that’s one more reason to never come to the USA again

[-] [email protected] 37 points 2 days ago

Seriously, what’s the advantage of having social media? Just seems like a liability with every account.

[-] [email protected] 25 points 2 days ago

If you don’t have social media you must be “hiding” something and will be denied entry.

Make a fake one that posts like... idk post random tech stuff that you could be reasonably interested in. Make nothing critical of authority. As a decoy profile.

Then you can rant about big brother on an anonymous Lemmy Account over TOR.

What if you don't have social media accounts?

[-] [email protected] 19 points 2 days ago

This is stupid. This will not stop spies and terrorists, they will just create fake accounts. This will only hurt legitimate immigrants.

Of course, how would they know if you don't list any? Oh, that's right, PRISM. Fully expect that people who don't have social media accounts to get accused of having them simply because someone else shares the same name and did say First Amendment protected stuff, like Donald Trump is a terrible fucking president and should be impeached.

Sorry person with the last name Erdude. I guess you aren't getting into the US now.

Sure why not, since my name is Anthony O'Neill. You can find my short form username: Anon.

What could they find? I bet I'm save.

[-] [email protected] 13 points 2 days ago

I'm betting on the opposite problem,

We show here you've been VERY active. Please have a seat in this chair until we come for you.

[-] [email protected] 42 points 3 days ago* (last edited 3 days ago)

The attendance for the next FIFA cup was already looking bad, and I can't imagine the US government wanting your history of online activity to help it even a bit.

My US visa officer: what do you mean you did not have 'social' media accounts in 5 years? No, these weird sites don't count. Underground terrorist? Straight to gulag.

[-] [email protected] 34 points 3 days ago

They want to stay by themselves? That's fine by me. But then they should also stop exporting their Hollywood and streaming turds (as well as their shit food). That would only be fair. And maybe also stop behaving like if they owned the entire planet?

[-] [email protected] 29 points 3 days ago* (last edited 2 days ago)

in other news, the market price of hacked credentials for MAGA-friendly social media accounts:

📈

notein case it is unclear to anyone: the above is a joke.

in all seriousness, renaming someone else's account and presenting it to CBP as one's own would be dangerous and inadvisable. a more prudent course of action at this time is to avoid traveling to the united states.

[-] [email protected] 21 points 2 days ago

Every social media username? I figure most people are like me and lost most of them.
